Assignment 3
I.

Recession-A time period of economic decline during which industrial

and trade activities are reduced.
Inflation-a sustained increase in the general price level of goods and
services in an economy, generally caused by a surplus of money or
an economic boom
Detente-the easing of hostility or strained relations between
countries. Prime example is the winding down of the Cold War
Mutually assured destruction-a military strategy in which a full scale
use of highly powerful weapons of mass destruction by two or more
sides would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker
and the defender. Shown primarily in the Cuban Missile Crisis with
the threat of nuclear war.
Sequestration-Cutting budget across the entire spectrum in terms of
government. Taking legal possession of assets until a debt has been
paid in terms of money.
Miranda rights-the rights required to be read to a person before they
are interrogated. If these rights are not read, the person can walk
free regardless of their crimes.

II.

Mapp v. Ohio-This was a landmark case in criminal procedure which

ordained that all evidence obtained in violation of the Fourth
Amendment may not be used in state law criminal prosecutions in
state courts.
University of California v. Bakke-Landmark case for race equality. It
upheld the concept of affirmative action, which allowed race to be
one of several factors in college admission policy
Plessy v. Ferguson-Landmark case for constitutionality of racial
segregation of separate but equal. The court held that the
separate but equal provision of private companies was

constitutional and legal, but this decision was later overruled by the
ruling of Brown v. Board of Education.
Lawrence v. Texas-Landmark case for LGBT rights and equality.
Lawrence was charged for illegal sodomy because he engaged in
same sex intercourse with a consensual partner. The Supreme Court
overturned this ruling under the premise that the privacy of the
adults to engage in intimate conduct is protected under the 14th
amendment.
III.

Buckley v. Valeo-A landmark case for American campaign finance

law, it put federal limits on campaign contributions and ruled that
spending money to influence elections is a form of free speech.
In regards to the above, I personally dont think this should be
constitutionally protected. People have every right to put in their
physical hard work to support a campaign, but lets face the facts.
You need money to run a campaign, sometimes money that you
may not already have. To get this money (and thats hundreds of
millions of dollars by the way), you would have to appeal to those
who have it. Most of the rich people are businesspeople and can
sway the influence of the candidate hugely in their favor just with
one donation. I dont think this is valid because it continues to give
America the illusion that our vote matters.
