Part B (5x16 = 80 MARKS)
11) (a) (i) A composite wall consists of 10cm thick layer of building brick, k = 0.7W/mK, and 3 cm thick plaster,
k = 0.5 W/mK. An insulating material of k = 0.08W/mK is to be added to reduce the heat transfer through the wall
by 40%. Find its thickness.

(ii)A thin hollow tube wire 6mm outer dia and 4mm inner dia carries a current of 1000 A. water at 30 C is
circulated inside the tube for cooling the tube. Taking the heat transfer coefficient of water side as 35000W/m 2K
and K for tube material as18W/mK, Estimate the surface temperature of the tube if its outer surface is insulated.
Resistivity of material is 0.1 ohm mm2/m.

(b) A circumferential rectangular profile fin on a pipe of 50mm outer dia is 3mm thick and 20 mm long. Thermal
conductivity is 45W/mK. Convection coefficient is 100W/m 2K. Base temperature is 1200C and surrounding air
temperature is at 350C. Determine a) heat flow rate per fin b) fin efficiency c) fin effectiveness.

12) (a) (i) Air at 20C is flowing along a heated flat plate at 134C at a velocity of 3m/s. The plate is 2 m long and
1.5m wide. Calculate the thickness of the hydrodynamic boundary layer, heat transfer and skin friction coefficient
at 40cm from the leading edge of the plate. The kinematic viscosity of air at 20C may be taken as 15.06X10 -6
m2/sec.

(ii) A system for heating water from an inlet temperature of 20 C to an outlet temperature of 400C

involves passing the water through a 2.5 cm diameter steel pipe. The pipe surface temperature is
maintained at 1100 C by condensing steam on its surface. For a water mass flow rate of 0.5 kg/min. find
the length of the tube desired.

(b) (i) A thin 80 cm long and 8 cm wide horizontal plate is maintained at a temperature of 130 0 C in large

tank full of water at 700C. Estimate the rate of heat input to the plate necessary to maintain the
temperature of 1300 C.

(ii) A vertical pipe 80 mm diameter and 2m height is maintained at a constant temperature of 120 0
C .the pipe is surrounded by chill atmospheric air at 300 C . Find heat loss by natural convection.

13) (a) (i) Derive the expression for LMTD of parallel flow heat exchanger.

(ii) In a counter-flow double pipe heat exchanger; water is heated from 25 C to 65C by oil with a specific
heat of 1.45 kJ/kg K and mass flow rate of 0.9 kg/sec. The oil is cooled from 230C to 160C. If the overall heat
transfer coefficient is 420-W/rn2C, calculate the following: (i) The rate of heat transfer. (ii) The mass flow rate of
water and (iii) The surface area of the heat exchanger.

(b) (i) An aluminium pan of 15 cm diameter is used to boil water and the water depth at the time of boiling is 2.5
cm. The pan is placed on an electric stove and the heating element raises the temperature of the pan to 110 C.
Calculate the power input for boiling and the rate of evaporation. Take C sf = 0.0132.

(ii) A tube of 2 m length and 25 mm OD is to be used to condense saturated steam at 100C while the tube
surface is maintained at 920C. Find the average heat transfer coefficient and the rate of condensation of steam if
the tube is kept horizontal. The steam condenses on the outside of the tube.

14) (a) (i) Two parallel rectangular surfaces 1m X 2m are opposites to each other at a distance of 4m. The surfaces
are black and at 1000C and 2000C respectively. Find the heat exchange by radiation between two surfaces
. (8)
(ii) Two very large parallel planes with emissivities 0.3 and 0.8 exchange heat by radiation. A radiation shield
having the emissivity of 0.04 is placed between them. Find the percentage reduction in radiation heat exchange
and temperature of the shield.

(a) (i) CO2 and air


experience equimolar counter diffusion in a
circular tube whose length and diameter are 1m and 50mm respectively. The system is at a total pressure of 1 atm
and a temperature of 25C. The ends of the tube are connected to large chambers in which the species
concentrations are maintained at fixed values. The partial pressure of CO 2 at one end is 190mm of Hg while at
other end is 95mm of Hg. Estimate the mass transfer rate of CO 2 and air through the tube. The diffusion
coefficient for CO2 air combination is 0.16 x 10 4 m2/s.

(ii) An open pan of 20 cm diameter and 8cm depth contains water at 25Cand is exposed to dry atmospheric
air. Assuming the rate of diffusion of water as 8.54X10-4kg/h, find the diffusion coefficient.

(b) (i). Air at 1 atm and 25 0C, containing small quantities of Iodine, flows with a velocity of 6.2 m/s inside a 35
mm diameter tube. Calculate mass transfer coefficient for iodine. The thermo physical properties of air are: v=
15.5 x10-6 m2/s; D= 0.82 x10-5 m2/s.

(ii).Dry air at 20C ( = 1.2 kg/m3, v = 15 x 10-6 m2/s, D = 4.2 X 10-5 m2/s) flows over a flat plate of length 50
cm which is covered with a thin layer of water at a velocity of 1 m/s. Estimate the local mass transfer
coefficient at a distance of 10 cm from the leading edge and the average mass transfer coefficient.
