I. System introduction
HFC-227ea

13011211
HFC-227ea is a colorless, almost tasteless and
non-conductive gas without secondary pollution. It is
characterized by high cleanliness, no toxicity, high fire
extinguishing efficiency, small space occupation, low piping
system pressure, etc. Particularly, without damage for the ozone
layer and with short time of stay in the atmosphere, it is much
more environment friendly than alkyl halides. It is now a most
successful clean gas extinguishant and an optimal product for
substituting alkyl halides 1301 and 1211 as well.

II. Structure and working principle
2.1
2.1 System classification

The System includes a fire alarm system, a fire

extinguishing control system and a fire extinguishing device.

If classified according to the protected areas, the System

may be a unit-independent one or a combined distribution one.
When there are multiple areas needing to be protected in a
building or structure and these areas are combined and share a
set of automatic fire extinguishing device, the System will be a
combined distribution one; relatively speaking, when there is a
set of storage devices for each of the areas, the System will be
unit-independent one.
- 11 -

If classified according to the structural features, the System

may be one with a piping system or one without piping system
(also called a prefabricated one). The System without piping
system refers to a cabinet HFC-227ea fire extinguishing
equipment or a hanging HFC-227ea fire extinguishing
equipment.

2.2
2.2 Working principle

H+OH-O2

A HFC-227ea extinguishant realizes fire extinguishing

through both physical and chemical means. In thermal
decomposition, it absorbs a lot of heat, lowers the ambient
temperature and generates fluoride-bearing active free radicals
that react with the H+, OH- and O2 active free radicals generated
in the chain reaction in combustion, thus interrupting the
chemical reaction chain of combustion and realizing fire
extinguishing.
- 12 -

2.3
2.3 Control modes and operating regulations
/

The System has four main control modes including

automatic, manual, emergency mechanical manual and
emergency start/stop. See the control flow chart for the control
process. Note that there is no control mode selection for a
fixed-temperature hanging HFC-227ea fire extinguishing
equipment that has a function of automatic fire extinguishing
upon completion of installation.
1

30s

- 13 -

(1) Automatic control: The gas fire extinguishing controller is
provided with a smoke detector and a heat detector. It has a
control mode selection lock. When the lock is put in the AUTO
position, the gas fire extinguishing controller will enter the
automatic control mode. After either of the detectors sends a fire
signal, the gas fire extinguishing controller will send an alarm
bell alarm signal to inform relevant persons of the abnormality
and not start the fire extinguishing device for releasing the
extinguishant. (Note: When it is necessary to start the fire
extinguishing device for fire extinguishing, press the E-start
button. After that, the fire extinguishing device will start and
release the extinguishant for fire extinguishing.) After both the
detectors send a fire signal, the gas fire extinguishing controller
will send an audible and visual alarm signal to inform relevant
persons of the fire and reminding relevant persons of evacuating
from the scene and sending an online command for stopping
linkage devices such as the fan and the fire damper. After a
delay of thirty seconds, the gas fire extinguishing controller will
send a fire extinguishing command for turning on the solenoid
valve, starting the gas source, turning on the cylinder valves and
releasing the extinguishant for fire extinguishing. If it is found in
the delay that the fire extinguishing device does not need to be
started, press the E-stop button on the controller operation panel
out of the protected area to terminate sending of the fire
extinguishing command. After that, the fire extinguishing device
will not be started and the automatic control mode of the System
will be terminated.
2

- 14 -

(2) Manual control (usually not configured): After the control

mode selection lock on the gas fire extinguishing controller is
put in the MANUAL position, the gas fire extinguishing
controller will enter the manual control mode. After the
detectors send an alarm signal, the gas fire extinguishing
controller will send a corresponding fire alarm signal and not
start the fire extinguishing device. If existence of the fire is
confirmed by relevant person, press the E-start button on the
controller operation panel out of the protected area to start the
fire extinguishing device to release the extinguishant for fire
extinguishing.

Note: No matter the System is in an automatic or manual

mode, any E-start button may be pressed to start the fire
extinguishing device to release the extinguishant for fire
extinguishing. At the same time, the gas fire extinguishing
controller will enter a fire extinguishing alarm status.
3

1.2.
3.

- 15 -

(3) Emergency mechanical start (for the System with a piping

system): If the gas fire extinguishing controller has failed, a
person on duty who have judged that there is a fire should
immediately inform all the persons on the scene of evacuating
and, after making sure all the persons have evacuated from the
scene, follow the following steps to start the System with a
piping system in an emergency mechanical start mode: First,
manually stop the linkage devices and cut off the power supply.
After that, turn on the protected area selector valves. Finally,
turn on the cylinder valves on the storage cylinder group in the
protected area in a single time or one by one for fire
extinguishing.
4/

(4) Emergency start/stop: It is used for emergencies in the

following two circumstances: Circumstance A: If a person on
duty finds a fire, but the gas fire extinguishing controller does
not send an audible and visual alarm signal, the person on duty
should inform all the persons on the scene of evacuating and,
after making sure all the persons have evacuated from the scene,
press the E-start/stop button. After that, the System will execute
fire extinguishing at one. Circumstance B: If it is found in the
delay following an audible and visual alarm signal sent by the
gas fire extinguishing controller that the fire alarm is false, press
the E-start/stop button at one to make the System stop fire
- 16 -

extinguishing to avoid unnecessary losses.

2.5 Hanging System (wall-hanging type)

The hanging System mainly includes parts that are

assembled into a whole in advance, such as a fire extinguishant
storage cylinder, nozzles, a pressure gauge and sensing elements.
It is a fire extinguishing equipment subject to hanging type
installation. It may be an electromagnetic one used with an
alarm control system or a fixed-temperature one started through
a heat-sensing element and needing no alarm device.

The hanging System is often used in unattended small

rooms because of its characteristics such as flexible installation
space, low cost, basic fire extinguishing performance, etc.

68

The electromagnetic hanging System has same working

principle as that of the cabinet System; the fixed-temperature
- 21 -

hanging System has the working principle below: Upon an

indoor temperature of 68, the heat-sensing element will
explode automatically and the extinguishant will inject
automatically for fire extinguishing in the protected areas. Note
that the fixed-temperature hanging System should not be used in
a room with person(s).
