Unlike most urban redevelopment projects which
originate outside the area to be restored, this one came
from within. Detroit's Woodward East was ance the best
address in town, Teday, income of its residents is the
lowest in Detroit. Understandably, the current residents
want 19 stay there, but they also want decent housing
they can afford. Playing on the historic quality of the
neighborhood, today’s residents, through the Woodward
East Projects, Inc., raised funds for restoring the area's,
once beautiful Victorian houses. On a nine-and-a-half-
acre site, 18 historically significant Victorian structures
will be renovated into apariments. In addition, 104 new
housing units, designed to blend with the older ones will
go up and some usable open space created. For help.
the neighbomnood group turned first to professional de-
signers. At a three-day meeting, twenty local and out-of-
state architects donated their talent to prepare docu
ments needed for mortgage financing. They hope the
project will attract middle-income residents fo the area
fang will stimulate further private and public activity there
By having the area declared an historic district by state
and federal governments, Woodward qualified for gov-
emnment money. So far, funds have been given by state,
federal, and local govemments, and additional funds
have come ftom the National Endowment for the Arts, the
National Trust for Historic Preservation and from private
sources in the community.
