ThefactthatSajipursuedhisgoaldespitealltheoddsisaninspiringstoryinitself.
Today,histwinseaterultralightaircraft,calledSajiXAirShasdoneseveralsuccessfulflightsoverthescenicManimuthar
valleyinTamilNadu.

Attheageof5years,Sajiusedtomakesmallmodelsofcars,busesandaeroplaneswithcardboard.Butnoone
appreciatedhistalentornurturedit.Hisfatherdecidednottoteachhimafterclass7.
Thegeneralattitudewaswhatwillhelearnanyway.Littledidhisfatherknowthatoutofhisthreechildren,Sajiwouldmake
himreallyproudoneday.
ThoughSajicouldnotpursueeducation,helovedreadingbooks,whichhelpedhimgetagoodperspectiveondifferent
subjects.Hespenttimedoingoddrepairjobs,rubbertappingandbeingahelpinghandathome.

Hewasgoodatrepairingtelevisions,whichturnedouttobeasourceofincome.Hedevelopedalikingformachinesthat

Buthisbiggestfascinationwastoseeplanesflyinghighinthesky.
Once,Sajihappenedtoseetwohelicoptersflyingabovetherubberplantationssprayingpesticides.Hespenthours
watchingthemflyaroundtheplantationandfinallymadefriendswiththepilots.Seeinghisenthusiasm,thepilotofferedhim
arideinthehelicopterbeforetheywounduptheirwork.
Theflightwasalifechangingmomentforhim.HetookdowntheirMumbaiofficeaddressandmuchtotheirsurprise,heleft
homewithouttellinganyoneandtravelledallthewaytomeetthepilotswhenhewasjust15years.Hestayedwiththemfor
2weeks.Theygavehimbooks,alistofaviationcompaniesandpeopletocontactforhisdreamproject.
Thatwasthebeginningofalongjourneytosuccess.

Buildingthecrazyidea
Peopledubbedtheideaofmakinganaircraftasmadnessofadisabledperson.
Yearslater,heprovedthemwrong.Onceshunnedbypeopleasuseless,heisnowtheprideofThattakuzhavillage,near
ThodupuzhainIdukkidistrictofKerala.
Bravingsummerheatandrains,Sajibuilttheaircraftrightfromscratchinfrontofhissmallhouse.
Ittookmonthstobuildeachpartbuthisperseverancepaidoff.Hiswifesaysitwastiringtoseehimputinsomucheffortinto
makingeachandeverypart.
Healsohadtotravelalottomeetpeopletoclearhisdoubtsandgettherightequipmentandmachinestobuildhisdream
machine.
After5longyears,whenhefinishedmakingtheaircraft,therewasnoplaceinhisvillagetotestiftheaircraftcouldactually
takeoff.
SajisdreamsturnedintorealityinManimuthar,aremoteareainTirunelvelidistrict,wherehetestedhisflightandproved
successfullastyear.

Itcanbeusedforsportsaviation,recreationandtrainingpurposes.Ithasaspeedof140km/hr.Foranhoursflight,the
planeneeds16litresofpetrol.

Unfortunately,SajiXAirS,doesnothavealicense.Toflyabovetheheightof20feet,heneedstogetalicensefromthe
DirectorateGeneralofCivilAviation(DGCA).
ItwillbealmostimpossibleforSajitogetalicense.Itisavoluminousprocessfollowedbystringentmedicaltests,whichhe
willnotbeabletoclear.Ourgovernmentwillnotbendrulestoaccommodatepeoplelikehim.Hadhebeeninanyother
country,hewouldhaverisentogreatheights,saysSKJNair.
Iftheaircraftdoesnotgetalicense,Sajiseffortswilljustgowasteasitcanneverbeairborne.

In2004,whenAPJAbdulKalamwasthePresident,hehadcometoThodupuzhatowntoattendafunction,Sajiwantedto
showhisfirstaircraft.Butbecauseofheavysecurity,hewasunsuccessfulinmeetinghimhewasverydisappointed,says
Mariya.
However,SajiwiththehelpofProfessorBasilwrotetoKalamwhoaskedhimtotakepartinacompetitioninAhmedabad.
Hedidandwonaprizefordesigningthelightaircraft.KalamalsopromisedtomeethimthenexttimehevisitsKerala.Prof
Basildesignedawebsiteandmadevisitingcardsforhim,impressedbyhisbrilliantwork.
ThefirstaircraftwasspottedbyprofessorsfromVisveswarayaInstituteofEngineeringinKeraladuringanexhibition.They
boughttheaircraftforRs120,000toteachstudents.Soengineeringstudentsnowlearnthenittygrittiesofanaircraftfroma
schooldropoutsmeanmachine.

photographyandhasgoodknowledgeaboutelectronicsandaeronautics.
Evenengineeringcollegestudentsremarkedthathisworkisoutstanding.Theytoldhimthateventhoughtheyhave
technicalexpertiseandformaleducation,theywillnotbeabletomakeaflyingmachinethewayhedidsinglehandedly.
