St Andrew the First Called Apostle of Christ

St Andrew the First-Called was the first Apostle to follow our Lord Jesus Christ. His
brother, St (Simon) Peter, also followed His Calling soon afterwards. (JOHN 1:3542).
Having been born and grown up in Bethsaida, they must have been acquainted
with several of the other Disciples and even our Lord Jesus Christ Who had all
grown up in the same region many of whom were related.
Since his early youth St Andrew had Loved God with all his heart and soul. He and
his brother had been fishermen for as long as he could remember, and
although St Peter married and had children, St Andrew remained celibate his
entire life, preferring to dedicate himself body and soul to God.
When St John the Baptist and Forerunner to our Lord Jesus, began to preach, St
Andrew became his closest Disciple and he later sent him, together with St
John (the Beloved Disciple and Theologian) to Christ having identified Him
as the Lamb of God the True Messiah.
After the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost, St Andrew went
to the Eastern lands preaching the Word of God. He travelled through Asia
Minor, Thrace, Macedonia, and reaching the River Danube, he went along
the coast of the Black Sea, through Crimea, the Black Sea region and along
the River Dniepr, ascending to the place where the city of Kiev now stands.
He stopped overnight on the hills of Kiev, and upon rising in the morning, he said
to those Disciples who accompanied him: See these hills? Upon them shall
shine forth the Beneficence of God, and there will be a great city here, and
God shall raise up many churches.
St Andrew then went up around the hills, Blessed them all and set up a Cross on
each hill. Having completed his Prayers, he went up even further along the
Dniepr and reached a settlement of the Slavs, where Novgorod was built.
From there St Andrew journeyed through the land of the Varangians towards
Rome, teaching the people Christs Divine Truth, Baptising and Healing
countless multitudes in the Name of our Triune God.
Eventually, they returned to Thrace, where in the small village of Byzantium, (the
site of the future great city of Constantinople), he founded the Church of Christ.
So it was that St Andrew linked the Mother Church of Constantinople, with Her
Daughter Church of Russia.
On his Missionary Journeys St Andrew and his companion Disciples endured
many sufferings and torments from the pagans who cast them out of their
cities and beat them. In Sinope they were pelted with stones and rocks, but, by
the Grace of God, they remained unharmed, and they continued to ...make
Disciples of all Nations, to Baptise them in the Name of God the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit, and to teach them everything.. that our Lord Jesus Christ
had taught His Faithful Disciples and Apostles, thereby fulfilling their Sacred
Commission as Commanded by our Saviour.
Through the Intercessory Prayers of St Andrew, and his Faithful Companions, our
Lord Jesus Christ worked many Divine Miracles.
Through the concerted
Labours and Struggles of St Andrew and his Disciples, many Holy Churches of
Christ were established, for which he chose Bishops and Clergy to teach, to
guide, to encourage and to take care of the Spiritual Welfare of Gods Holy
Flocks.
At Patra, St Andrew suffered his final Martyrdom.
Our Compassionate Lord Jesus Christ had worked many Divine Miracles through
the Intercessory Prayers and Acts of Love of St Andrew in that great city the

Anthropon.
Our Lords first Disciples had been followers or Disciples of St John the Baptist.
They were St Andrew, St (Simon) Peter who was also known as Cephas, (Petros or
Rock), St Philip and St Nathanael, who was also known as St Bartholomew
and an unnamed Disciple whom our Holy Fathers believe was St John, the
author of this Holy Gospel who always referred obliquely to himself, such as
The Disciple whom Jesus Loved. It was a common literary device for writers
not to use their own names.
When our Lord referred to St Nathanael as having no deceit He meant that his
heart and soul were pure and that he was always straightforward, truthful and
honest - having no need or desire to deceive others.
Whatever occurred while St Nathanael was under the fig tree is not stated.
St John Chrysostom believed that it was the usual meeting place of St Philip and St
Nathanael, and that our Lord was praising St Nathanael for being diligent
and careful in their search for the Divine Messiah.
Our Lord Jesus Christs foreknowledge and ability to see into everyones heart and
soul obviously stirred St Nathanaels spontaneous Confession of Faith.
The awesome title Son of Man is that of the long-awaited Messiah, which had a
level of Mystery in its meaning, indicating Someone of Heavenly Origin Who
would usher in the Kingdom of God:
DANIEL 7 : 24 25: ... One like the Son of Man was coming with the Clouds of
Heaven, until He came to the Ancient of Days and approached Him.
Then Dominion, Honour, and the Kingdom were given to Him, and all
peoples, Tribes, and languages served Him.
His Authority is an
Everlasting Authority, which shall not pass away, and His Kingdom shall
not be destroyed.
In an Old Testament Prophecy, Jacob, the ancient Patriarch, dreamt of a Ladder
connecting Heaven and Earth, upon which the Angels of God were ascending
and descending. (GENESIS 28: 12 15)
Our Lord Jesus Christ is this Divine Ladder Who Unites and Connects us to Heaven
Who makes our Ascension to Heaven possible and Who is therefore, the Son
of Man, as well as the Incarnate Eternal, Only Begotten Word and Son of God.

infirm and ailing were Healed and the blind received their sight. Among
those who were completely cured of various afflictions and physical
disabilities were an illustrious citizen named Sosios and the wife of the
Governor of Patra, Maximilla,as well as his brother, Stratokles.
All these Divine Miracles, together with St Andrews Inspired Preaching and
Teaching of Christs Divine Truth profoundly affected and Enlightened almost
all the citizens of Patra.
A few stubborn and determined pagans remained, however, among whom was
the Prefect of Patra, Aegeatos.
With sincere Love (Agape) and Humility St Andrew appealed to his soul - striving to
make him understand and accept the Divine Mystery of Eternal Life, through
the Wonderworking Power of the Holy Cross of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Christ.
But it was to no avail, for the Prefect remained hard-hearted and Spiritually Blind
and Deaf. He was also enraged at the audacity of St Andrews efforts to
Enlighten him to the Reality of the only True, Living and All Powerful God - our
Creator Who grants us Eternal Life and everything that is Good and Blessed.
Prefect Aegeatos gave orders for the arrest and execution of St Andrew by means
of crucifixion, for he thought the former pagans would renounce Christ when
they witnessed the Holy Apostles humiliation and painful death on the cross.
However, St Andrew the First-Called Apostle of Christ accepted his Martyrdom with
Joy.
In order to prolong the suffering of the Saint, Prefect Aegeatos issued orders not to
nail his wrists and feet, but to tie them to the cross.
For two days St Andrew continued teaching Divine Truth to the citizens who had
gathered to witness his Martyrdom, and as they listened to him, they pitied him
and tried to remove him from the cross.
Fearing a riot, Aegeatos ordered a stay of execution, but St Andrew continued his
Prayers, beseeching our Lord to grant him to Repose on the cross, and the
soldiers were unable to loosen the ropes, no matter how hard they tried.
Finally, St Andrew, having Glorified God for His Great Mercy, loudly exclaimed:
Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit!
A blazing ray of Divine Light illumined the cross and the Martyr crucified upon it
and when the Light faded, St Andrew had surrendered his soul to our Lord.
Maximilla, the wife of the Prefect Aegeatos, had the body of St Andrew reverently
removed from the cross, and then buried him with all due honour.
A few centuries later, Emperor Constantine the Great, made the necessary
arrangement for the Holy Relics of St Andrew to be solemnly transferred to
Constantinople and placed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, to rest beside
the Holy Relics of St Luke the Evangelist Apostle, and St Timothy, the Faithful
Disciple of St Paul.

Irony and sarcasm are bitter medicine, which St Paul used on this occasion with
full force.
The three parallel statements: ... we are fools... weak... dishonoured... were
heaped upon each other in a stinging series.
The relative comfort of the Corinthians Christian Community was contrasted with
the persecuted, poverty-stricken and uncertain lifestyle of the Holy Apostles of
Christ.
They endured all kinds and degrees of humiliation being treated as filth and
even like the off-scourings yet, instead of retaliating in a similar fashion
striking back in a similar manner at their persecutors the Holy Apostles and
Faithful Disciples of Christ responded with unconditional, Divine Love Agape!
They endured all their humiliation and suffering for the Pure Joy of serving our
Lord and Saviour thereby reconciling the fallen world to God.
St Paul soothed the pain of his rebuke by reminding the Faithful of his Spiritual
Fatherhood to them.
The Holy Church of Christ is similar to any other family with maturing children
who need parental guidance.
As Struggling Disciples of Christ, we who are the maturing children, need our
Spiritual Fathers to teach and guide us.
St Paul urged us as Faithful Disciples of Christ to imitate him just as he ceaselessly
strove to imitate our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us extol that Preacher of the Faith and

Minister of the Word, Saint Andrew the
Apostle. He fishes human beings out
of the depths, holding the Cross
instead of a pole, and letting down its
Power instead of a line.
And he
retriees souls from the error of the
foe, and he offers them to God as an
acceptable Gift. O Believers, let us
ever extol him and the entire Chorusof
Disciples of Christ, so that he will
Intercede with the Lord to be merciful
towards us on Judgement Day.

beyond nature. For it burnt not the
Children whom it had received, even
as the Fire of the Godhead
consumed not the Virgins Womb
into which It had descended.
Therefore in praise let us sing:
Let the whole Creation Bless the Lord
and Exalt Him above all for ever!

THE MAGNIFICAT

To the Son Who was Begotten of

the Father without change before all
ages, and in the Last Times was
without seed made Flesh of the
Virgin, to Christ our God let us cry
aloud
Thou hast raised up our
Horn, Holy art Thou, O Lord!
