CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION:
This chapter deals with the description of the procedure followed for carrying out the
investigation. It contains research design, tools and techniques including the
questionnaire employed for data collection.

PROBLEM OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of the study is to bring to light the multiple dimensions
(Knowledge, attitude and practice) of the Anganwadi workers involved in the SABLA
scheme. The present study seeks to identify various factors acting as barriers in
implementing the SABLA scheme.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1) What are the knowledge, attitude and practicing levels of Anganwadi workers
involved in the SABLA scheme?
2) What are the barriers in implementing SABLA scheme?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1)
2)
3)
4)

To examine the knowledge levels of functionaries working in SABLA scheme.

To identify the attitudes of the functionaries carrying out the SABLA scheme.
To outline the practice of functionaries involved in SABLA scheme.
To identify the barriers of implementation of scheme

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS

Adolescent
For the purpose of this study adolescent girl who is in the age group of 11 14
and 14 18 years.

Life Skills
Life skills are psychosocial skills that help adolescents to have adoptive and
positive behaviour as well as help them deal effectively with demands and
challenges of everyday life.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The study purports to depict the different dimensions (Knowledge, attitude and
practice) of the Anganwadi workers involved in the SABLA scheme. The present
study seeks to secure the holistic picture of different facets of the problem as they
were felt by the respondents, and deriving the factors associated with it. Therefore the
researcher has opted for descriptive research design.

UNIVERSE OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted in the 3 centers of Integrated Child Development service
(ICDS) at Chennai, Tamil Nadu where SABLA scheme has been implemented for 4
years before the study conducted.
The three centers of a particular of a particular project out of 12 projects was selected
with reference to the permission granted by the District project officer and ICDS
office of Chennai district.

SAMPLING FRAMEWORK

Out of 12 projects implementing SABLA scheme in Chennai, Tamil Nadu; one project
was taken for study. The study was conducted in 3 centers of ICDS centers covering a
target population of 50 respondents.

SAMPLING METHOD
Researcher has used the purposive sampling method for study. Purposive sampling is
a type of non-probability sampling. This method is used primarily when there are a
limited number of people available in the area being researched.

SAMPLE SIZE
The total sample size of the study is 50 Anganwadi workers among the functionaries
involved in the Sabla Scheme. Majority of the respondents belong to early adulthood
ranging from the age 25-35 years. The data bounded 50 female respondents. The
researcher visited the 3 ICDS centers in Thenaympet, NSK Nagar, Anna Nagar of
Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

SOURCES OF DATA
The study relied on the primary source of data. The primary data comprised firsthand
information generated on the experiences of the Anganwadi workers from Chennai.
The data has been generated by employing interview schedule.

UNIT OF ANALYSIS AND UNIT OF INFORMATION

Anganwadi workers those who are working in SABLA project at ICDS centres,
Chennai were chosen as the unit of information.
TOOLS OF DATA COLLECTION

Interview schedule method was administrated as an appropriate tool for data

collection for the present study. It would assess the level of self-esteem and coping
strategies of hearing impaired adolescents. The tools were used based on the literature
read by the researcher from various books, journals and reports pertaining to SABLA
Schemes.

PROCEDURE OF DATA COLLECTION

The researcher proceeded for collecting the data after getting the approval from the
district project officer of ICDS. The researcher visited the ICDS centers and
established rapport with the functionaries i.e., the supervisors, Child development
project officer, mobile trainers, and the Anganwadi workers.
The respondents were explained about the nature and purpose of the study. The data
was collected by interview schedule and the collected data was analyzed using
frequency distribution.

PILOT STUDY
In order to check the appropriateness of the interview schedule, pilot testing was
carried out with 10 Anganwadi workers. The researcher made corrections in the
verbatim used in the interview schedule according to the limitations expressed by the
respondents.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted among Anganwadi workers of SABLA scheme hence the
outcome of the study may not be generalised to other development schemes.

There is very limited literature pertaining to the SABLA scheme in the field.

Since the purposive sampling method used in this study, it may be possible that
the sample unit is uncertain to be representative of all functionaries involved in
the SABLA scheme.

Data for the study was collected only from Anganwadi workers of ICDS projects
in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the outcome of the study is limited only with
respondents chosen and area of being researched.
