Extravagant Love, Extravagant Generosity

8:50 a.m.
Sanctuary

Over the next three weeks we will be thinking, praying, and preaching about the extraordinary
generosity of God and the call to respond in thanksgiving with our own giving. We are calling the
worship series Extravagant Love, Extravagant Generosity. During this time you will have the
opportunity to hear from many folks about their own journeys in and with generosity.

Singers.

Sanctuary

Worship with
music from the
Chancel Choir.

I love this time of year! I do my devotions each morning looking over the woods behind the
parsonage. As the trees turn each one becomes its own unique celebration of color. The sunrises
have been breathtaking and the sunsets even more dazzling. It is hard for me not to think about
the amazing creative work of God and the millions of ways that we receive grace day by day.

For me, the journey begins with the simple awareness of all that we often take for granted. The air
that we breathe, the sun that sustains all life on earth, the food we eat, the talents that we share
all are gifts from God. We can neither create nor reproduce any one of them, yet our survival
depends on the presence of each. Even at this very basic level, we are constant recipients of Gods
grace and care. How does one say thank you for that kind of grace? How do we emulate Gods lifegiving grace in our own lives? What does the Bible have to say about the relationship between our
giving and our relationship with God and with each other?
We will be exploring these and other questions in worship and on Wednesday nights throughout
November. We will be asking you to be in prayer about what God might be calling you to give in the
upcoming year and what a next step in your own journey might look like.
Gales and my journey in generosity and giving, while by no means exemplary, has been a huge
source of joy and growth over the years. I hope each of you will join us during this important time
as we too seek Gods guidance for our faithful next step together.
Peace,

CROP Walk Generates Letters

This year's CROP Hunger Walk introduced a new ministry.

Ruth Thompson from First Presbyterian Church hosted a
Bread for the World Table. Bread for the World is a Christian legislative advocacy ministry working to overcome
hunger. CROP Walkers were invited to sign letters to Congresswoman Hartzler asking her to co-sponsor the Global
Food Security Act. Nearly 50 letters were delivered to her
Columbia office. Thanks to MUMC participants!

Nov. 22: Open Door Movie Night

Open Door Ministry will host an afternoon at the movies
on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. as we watch for the BIBLE
tells me so, a film by Daniel Karslake.
This multi-award-winning film is a provocative,
entertaining documentary that brilliantly reconciles
homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process
reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based
almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious)
misinterpretation of the Bible.
Please let us know that you will be joining us at 573-4433111 or email jo@moumc.org. Childcare available by
reservation.

Nov. 19-20: A Night at the Shelter

A Night at the Shelter
will be performed at the
First Baptist Church (1112
E. Broadway near Stephens
College) Thursday, Nov. 19
and Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
Directed by Caryl Bryan and
Nora Dietzel and written
by University of Missouri
political science professor
David Webber, a RATI
volunteer, the play portrays
the homeless experience in
Columbia. It illustrates the
themes of the various causes
of homelessness, gratitude
for small acts of kindness,
community involvement, and
There but for the Grace of God Go I, from the
perspective of the homeless and those who volunteer to
help them. Please join us for this production on Thursday
and Friday, November 19 and 20th. There will be a
reception following the performance.
Tickets available online at https://everyeventgives.

SATURDAY: 1 Corinthians 11:17-28 In remembrance of me

REFLECTION: A true celebration of the Lords supper requires solemn and
thankful reflection and remembrance. Often, rituals become so familiar we can
forget their importance. Fight this habit and come to this meal in holy awe.
ACTION: Take time out of your day to solemnly recite and reflect on the Lords
Prayer.

FRIDAY: Luke 22:15-20 Jesuss declaration

REFLECTION: The Lords supper reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made for us.
His body is broken for us. His blood is spilled for us.
PRAYER: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

THURSDAY: 1 Corinthians 11:17-28 Ties that bind

REFLECTION: In this letter, Paul is writing to a church full of divisions. It is easy
to create cliques within a church and accidentally exclude others. But as Paul
reminds us, we should all be equal and welcome at Christs table.
SONG: Sing or read through Blest Be the Tie That Binds (UMH No. 557) and
remind yourself of the importance of the Christian love we share together.

WEDNESDAY: Acts 2:38-47 Four actions

REFLECTION: Peter notes four main actions of Christians once they are
baptized: listening to the gospel, building relationships, eating meals together
and praying. These four activities helped them to grow in their faith and to
bring more people to Christ.
ACTION: Focus on one of these four actions today by doing it. Maybe you could invite
a friend to Wednesday Night Live, set aside a longer time to pray tonight, etc.

TUESDAY: Acts 2:38-47 What is baptism?

REFLECTION: In this passage, Peter is asked the same question as John the
Baptist was in yesterdays verse. Peter, however, focuses on baptism and the
forgiveness of sins as first steps.
DRAW: Draw what baptism means to you. Be as creative as you want. Hang the
picture as a reminder that your sins have been forgiven.

MONDAY: Luke 3:10-14 The central question

REFLECTION: What then should we do? is the central question of Christian
life. In this passage, John the Baptist answers by focusing on distributing
financial resources to those in need.
JOURNAL: Write about a time someone helped you when you were in need. How
did this affect your faith? Where are places in your life where you can help others?

Growing Deeply

Read or subscribe to the full weekly

Growing Deeply Guide at moumc.org/grow
Printed copies are available at the Connector Desk.

Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who
are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him. And he testified
with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from
this corrupt generation. So those who welcomed his message were baptized,
and that day about three thousand persons were added. They devoted
themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread
and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs
were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all
things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute
the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time
together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad
and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.
And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Golf Cart Drivers Needed

As the weather turns colder a nice warm lift from the parking garage to the
church is very much appreciated by many of our members. In order to continue
to provide that service we are in need of volunteers willing to drive the golf cart.
Volunteering for this team involves a commitment of just two hours on one Sunday
each month. Schedules will not interfere with the drivers ability to attend worship. Being part of this team is a great opportunity to serve others as we all seek
to support the ministry and mission of Missouri UMC. Contact Jo at 443-3111 or
jo@moumc.org to find out more about this opportunity to serve or to sign up for a
spot on the team.
