Electroluminescent lamps were first produced and industrialized for military applications, because they provided
special features that other technologies were not able to provide, including: flexibility, uniformity of light, mechanical

Why LED lighting is so important

There are many benefits that the use of this new technology will carry in the near future.
First, LED lamps provide energy savings by about 70% compared to traditional lamps and
simultaneously emit high and precise illumination with a white light and low heat. LED lamps
have an expectancy life greater then traditional bulb and don’t have light pollution. Other
advantages of LED technology are the time of ignition, effectively instantaneous and the total
absence of flicker of the light beam that often characterize the traditional light fittings. LED lamps
are compact, easy to install and require little maintenance. This technology helps to reduce

LED - LIGHT EMITTING DIODE
Until few years ago the LED, or light emitter diode, was regarded as a tiny source of coloured
light that can emit low_flow with low values of luminous efficency and therefore only suitable
for signaling equipment and systems and for decorative lighting of small objects. It seemed
not to be used for ambients lighting, also of small dimensions.
Instead, developments have been surprising: in the last five years has tripled the value of
luminous efficency (from 30lm/W to over 100lm/W at present) and this value is growing up
with other benefits of great interest for light designer. The recent history of LED shows a
typical process of rapid technological evolution that has relaunched a product considered
for a long time “Niche”.
In the meddle 90’s started innovations that would allow the use of LED in lighting ambients . In
Japan, at the research center of electronics company Nichia, a researcher (Shuji Nakamura)
was able to in crease the lumen output of blue LED. Already existed LED capable of emitting
red, green and amber light.
The advent of blue LED high flux has permitted, using three primary colours (red, green and
blue ie RGB), to generate heterochromatic light, white tone, useful for lighting ambients.
Nakamura himself experienced in those years another way to generate white light that would
have been a great success: the light emitted from blue LED was partially filtered by a special
coating of phosphorous on the pad of the semiconductor (chip) to obtain a conversion into
yellow radiation, that with the remaining blue, it appear to our eyes as white colour.

LED - LIGHT EMITTING DIODE
LEDs are a special type of junction diode p-n formed by a thin layer of doped semiconductor
material. When subjected to a forward voltage to reduce the potential barrier of the junction,
electrons, in the semiconductor conduction band, recombine with holes of the valence band,
releasing enough energy to produce photons. Because of the reduced thickness of the chip,
a reasonable number of these photons can leave it as light. LEDs are made of GaAs
(gallium arsenide), GaP (gallium phosphide), GaAsP (gallium arsenide phosphide), SiC
(silicon carbide) and GaInN (gallium nitride and indium). The exact choice of the
semiconductor determines the peak photons emission wavelength and then light intensity
output.
LEDs are compose of various conventional inorganic materials that produce following

• Zaffiro (Al2 O3) as substrate - blue

of the LED chip, which regulates the power
supplied to the LEDs (using PWM) in order
to limit the maximum temperature.
• The thermal sensor is an NTC thermistor
and temperature from 47K threshold is
set at 70°C: until the temperature of the LED
remains below 70°C the power output of the
PWM is at 100%; if the temperature exceeds
70°C, the power supplied by the PWM and
gradually decreased to a minimum of 50%,
not to exceed the maximum temperature.
• Normally the power output will stabilize at a
value that allows the LEDs to maintain the
temperature of 70°C.
• The card is equipped with 5 channels that
deliver a 350mA to drive the LEDs.
• There are 2 versions of the tab, depending
on supply voltage:
- Tab 48V DC powered, can control up to
12 LEDs per channel (60LED)
- Tab 24V DC powered, can control up to
6 LED per channel (30LED)
• The board is powered by a 2 pole terminal,
while the thermistor is connected to another
connector pin 2 and the LEDs are connected
to a connector 10poles (2 poles per channel)
• The maximum operating temperature is 75°C
