Unit 5
: Energy in Transportation
Topic Title : Explaining Motion
Time Frame: 1 day
I.

OBJECTIVES
General:
Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of force and motion as applied to
land and air/sea transport.
Specific:
1.
State the third law of motion.
2.
Identify the action-reaction forces in a given situation.

II.

III.

SUBJECT MATTER
A.

Lesson Title: Action-Reaction

B.

Materials: 2 spring balances, string

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
A.

Review/Motivation
1.
If I push this block, what will happen to it? Why does it stop
2.
Suppose I push this cart, what will happen to it? How do you
compare the motion of the block and the cart? How do you
explain the difference in the motion of these two objects?
3.
Suppose I push this wall, will it move? Why it doesnt move?

B.

Lesson Proper
1.
Pre-Activity discussion
Ask the students what a spring balance does.
State the objective and clarify the procedures of the activity.
2.
Activity Proper
Divide the class into groups of 6 or 8 members. But the
activity should be done in pairs. Each group will take turn in
gathering data.
Check if all the groups are following the procedure properly.

C.

Discussion
1.
Discuss the answers to the questions in the activity.
2.
Emphasize that that the interacting forces (action-reaction) act
on different bodies; thus they do not cancel each other.

4.
D.

Demonstrate different situations showing action-reaction

forces.
a)

Jumping, Action: Foot pushes floor downward.

Reaction: Floor pushes foot upward.

b)

Walking/Running
Action: Foot pushes floor backward.
Reaction: Floor pushes foot forward.

c)

Wheel Action: Wheel pushes on the ground

Ground reaction: Ground pushes on the wheel

Ask students to give their own examples.

Generalization
1.
Newtons 3rd law of motion states that
To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Action-reaction forces always
- come in pairs
- are equal in magnitude
- are opposite in direction
- act on different bodies (they dont cancel each other)
5. Application
Using Newtons 3rd law of motion, explain the following in terms of
action-reaction forces.
1.
2.
3.

F.

IV.

The flight of airplane

Rocket launching
Motion of spaceships in outer space

Valuing
Keep our environment clean. The garbage that we throw into the river
or canal will come back to us tomorrow.
ASSIGNMENT
Gather information by group on the causes of vehicular or road
accidents and road safety measures.

Unit 5- Energy in Transportation

Lesson Plan 5.11- Action-Reaction

5-68

Activity 5.11
Action-Reaction
Purpose
State Newtons 3rd law of motion.
Materials: 2 spring balances, string
Procedure
A.

Connect 2 spring balances with their hooks. Ask your partner to hold one
end of the balance, while you hold the other end horizontally. Pull the
spring balance while your partner just hold the other end. Observe the
reading on each balance.

Q1. What is the reading on your balance and that of your partner? What
do these values represent?
Q2. How do you compare the direction of your partners and your forces?
B.

C.

Pull the spring balance harder. Be careful that you do not exceed the
maximum reading on the spring balance.
Q3.

What is the reading on your balance and that of your partner?

Q4.

How do you explain your observation?

Attach one end of your spring balance to the wall, while the other end is
connected to the second spring balance. Ask your partner to pull the spring
balance. Observe the reading on each balance.
Q5. What is the reading in each balance?
Q6. Compare the two readings.
Q7. Compare the direction of the forces exerted on the two ends of the
connected spring balance.
Q8. Do the two forces exerted on each end of the two spring balance cancel
each other?

Generalization
How do you describe the interacting forces in terms of magnitude and
direction?
