Episode One pp. 206:
As was stated in Chapter 3, an authentic text should include richness in cultural context,
which is why I have selected two versions of La Llorona legend as my authentic text (pp. 85).
This particular legend is very well known amongst the Spanish-speaking populations both in the
United States and in Latin America. Legends form an important part of most cultures and they
are something that the students may have heard in their own childhood. The popular appeal of
legends may help students recall learned vocabulary. In addition, this legend will allow them to
see verb conjugation being utilized in a different context than normal class readings. This legend
would be incorporated as part of the cultural content of my classroom and would be introduced
near the Day of the Dead celebrations. Thus, La Llorona is a legend that children grow up
hearing in Spanish-speaking countries and has been carried on for years and years through word
of mouth, which makes it a popular authentic work.
Two written versions of the legend will be utilized based on the students reading and
comprehension levels. On day 1, we will review the definition of a legend. Students will learn
that many people believe that legends are true stories, which is why they continue to be passed
down to new generations. Before we actually begin reading the legend, we will review
vocabulary that we have learned in class and that will be utilized in the legend. For example, we
will review family members and verb conjugations that we will see in the legend. During this
lesson, students will be given the opportunity to share any legends that they may have heard
from their own families.
On day 2, we will read the legend in small groups. Different students will be doing the
reading. This will help students practice their speaking skills in a small group setting. During this
time, students will be underling vocabulary they recognize and circling vocabulary they do not

recognize. They will also be able to fill in a chart with information they understand from the
legend. For example, they will be able to answer questions about who the characters are and the
plot of the legend. Students will also be given higher thinking reading questions to answer about
the text that will help them interpret the text, make inferences, and share their reactions.
On day 3, students will write the legend in their own words in Spanish. The goal is to
write over 150 words in 20 minutes. They will be asked to include as many details as possible.
After they have finished their own writing, they will trade papers with a partner and correct each
others work. All students will hand in their work at the end of class and grading will be based on
details, grammar, spelling, and number of words. For additional credit, students can draw their
own representations of the legend to demonstrate their understanding of the legend in a more
artistic way. In conclusion, this lesson would incorporate an authentic text in the form of a legend
that will allow students to break down the text through various methods.

Muchas personas dicen que la leyenda de La Llorona es la verdad.
Hay una mujer bonita que se llama Mara. Mara tiene una familia pequea. Tiene un esposo
guapo, y tambin tiene dos hijos adorables. Mara piensa que todos estn contentos. Mara piensa
que todo es perfecto.

Pero un da, el esposo de Mara se va. Ahora Mara no tiene esposo. Ahora siempre est muy
triste. Tambin Mara y sus hijos son pobres. No tienen dinero. No tienen comida. Los pobres
nios quieren comer. A Mara no le gusta ver a sus hijos tristes. Los nios siempre lloran mucho.
Quieren ver a su pap y tambin quieren comer. Mara siempre piensa, yo s que mi esposo
vuelve. Pero l no vuelve.
Un da Mara va a un ro con sus hijos. El ro es grande y rpido. Los nios quieren comer y
estn llorando. Siguen gritando:
Quiero ver a pap! Quiero ver a pap! y tambin quiero comer! quiero comer!
Mara piensa en un plan. Piensa en un plan horrible. Mira a sus hijos, y mira el ro. No piensa
ms y empuja a sus hijos en el ro! En poco tiempo, sus hijos se mueren, y ella se va.
Pero cuando Mara piensa un poco ms, est muy triste. Vuelve al ro en la noche. Busca a sus
hijos muertos. Llora y grita. Sigue gritando:
Mis hijos! Mis hijos! Dnde estn mis hijos?
Ella sigue gritando por mucho tiempo, pero sus hijos estn muertos. Mara est loca y triste, y
salta en el agua, y en poco tiempo, ella se muere tambin.
Pero esto no es el fin de la leyenda. Muchas personas dicen que Mara est muerta, pero vuelve
en la noche. Dicen que pueden ver a ella. Dicen que Mara vuelve y va a los ros en la noche.
Dicen que ella busca a sus hijos. Pero ahora no se llama Mara. Ahora se llama La Llorona
porque siempre llora, y tambin grita. Siempre est llorando y gritando:
Mis hijos! Mis hijos! Dnde estn mis hijos? Y La Llorona sigue gritando y busca a sus
hijos muertos en la noche.

Pero esto no es el fin de la leyenda. Muchas personas dicen que Mara vuelve en la noche. Dicen
que pueden ver a ella. Dicen que pueden or a ella. Dicen que Mara est muerta, pero vuelve, y
va al lado del agua en la noche. Dicen que ella siempre est buscando a sus hijos.
Pero ahora no se llama Mara. Ahora se llama La Llorona porque siempre est llorando y
tambin est gritando:
Mis hijos! Mis hijos! Dnde estn mis hijos?
Y en la noche, La Llorona siempre esigue llorando y sigue gritando. Y tambin sigue buscando a
sus hijos muertos.
Y cuando ella ve a nios en la noche al lado del agua, ella los empuja en el agua y se mueren, o
ella agarra a los nios y los lleva para ser sus hijos para siempre.
