Introduction To Poetry
I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide
or press an ear against its hive.
I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,
or walk inside the poems room
and feel the walls for a light switch.
I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the authors name on the shore.
But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.
They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

When I read the information I understand hoe important poetry is for the
poet Billy Collins.
He believes that if is an enjoyable experience to read a poem or to listen to
it. And he says that students should enjoy poetry rather than just analysis he
calls on people to use.
Post-Reading
a) The room is dark and unknown, just like the meaning of the poem. To
understand the poem, the reader must move from darkness to light by
FEELING around for the light switch. Once the light is turned on, the
reader will be able to see how the room (poem) is arranged.
Reflection
