Preparation for reading: Predicting genre and storyline
- Students will be given copies of Light Horse Boy by
Dianne Wolfer
- Students will look at the front cover
- Think-pair-share activity about aspects of visual literacy
- Selected student to read the blurb of the book, rest of the
class follow using individual copies
- Think-pair-share activity discussing which genre they
think it might belong to (teacher can offer examples:
adventure, comedy, historical, science-fiction, romance
etc)
- Class discussion: what language and visual literacy
features made you think that?
- Students to write short predications about the storyline of
the book
- Students to write any unfamiliar words on posit it notes
(eg. Light Horse), definitions will be explained and post-its
will remain stuck to the board to be used in next lesson

During shared reading before commencing this lesson,


students were required to underline any words that were
unfamiliar to them
Class discussion: students will say one of their selected
words then read aloud the whole sentence that the word
is in
- As a class, students will discuss what they think the
definition of the word is and how they think the chosen
word adds meaning to the sentence
- Teacher will use a table to model how students will set out
their own:

- As each student reads, the other will write down
