ELECTRICAL AND INFORMATION ENGINEERING LABORATORIES AND

INSTRUMENTS

ENERGY LABORATORY

i.

Oscilloscopes: It is used as a recording device to read signals and waveforms from signal and functions generator.
It consists of a screen and buttons that can be manipulated and adjusted to get required results. Some of the buttons
include the: positional button, volts per division button, time per division button, etc. An oscilloscope can come with
various frequencies e.g. 20MHz, 40MHz or 50MHz.

An oscilloscope, displaying a 440Hz sine wave from a signal generator.

ii.

Module: A module is a combination of several practical together. Example: Analog-digital Converter, Digitalanalog Converter, etc. There are different modules for different practicals. As shown below.

Charon module

iii.

Logic Analyzer: It is used to analyze your logic circuit such as the AND gate, OR gate, etc. It has four ports with
which it can be connected to a computer system. As shown below.

iv.

Programmable Logic Control: It is used to program your logic circuit.is a digital computer used for the automation
of various electro-mechanical processes in industries. These controllers are specially designed to survive in harsh
situations and shielded from heat, cold, dust, and moisture etc. PLC consists of a microprocessor which is
programmed using the computer language. As shown below.

v.

Linear Circuit Lab: It consists of DC and AC voltmeters, an ammeter and a function generator which is used to
generate signals such as the square wave, triangular wave and sine wave. It has a range of frequencies from 100100kHz. The Linear circuit lab also consists of a fixed power supply and bread board.

vii.

Digital Oscilloscope: This different from the normal oscilloscope because it can store and copy information to your
computer system.
Electronic Work-Bench (As shown below)

Functional generator: This generates signal (sine wave, square wave and triangular wave). As shown below.

Signal Generator: It is used to generate signal at different frequency. As shown below.

AC- Power Supply: It is used for varying current having a variable with voltage level of 0 250V and a
transformer variable.
DC-Power Supply: It is used for measuring direct current of voltage level.
Digital Multimeter: It is used for getting actual value of what you are measuring.

ELECTRIC POWER & MACHINE LABORATORY

i.

Single Phase Transformer: It is used to perform all experiments and practical that needs to be done on a single
phase transformer. Such practical include: Polarity test, Open Circuit test, Closed Circuit test, Load test, etc. The
Varian is used to vary the input voltage from 0-270 volts. As shown below.

ii.

Variable Transformer: It can be used to vary voltage, It as coils that determines level of voltage output and as
a working capability of a stabilizer but varies in it regulation, where its own regulation is automatically
controlled. As sown below.

iii.

Photo contact Tachometer: It is used to measure the luminous intensity of light. As shown below.

iv.

Electrical Motor: A machine can either be a motor or a generator. A motor converts electrical energy to
mechanical while a generator works vice versa. As shown below.

v. Autotransformer: It has one input and various voltage outputs. The voltage is regulated by a coil within the
transformer and it requires a load of known wattage.

vi. AC Induction motor winding trainer: A trainer enables you to demonstrate the windings in the induction motor
e.g. lap winding and wave winding. There are connectors to link one port to another. It can be connected to a
temperature sensitive device known as the Magnetic Power Brake Unit which trips off the system when it gets
too hot. As shown below.

vii. Power Analyzer: It is used to analyze power i.e. reactive, apparent or resistive power. As shown below.

viii. Wattmeter: It is used to measure watt ratings of three and single phase. It is rated in watts. As shown below.

ix. Stroboscope: it is used to measure the speed of light. As shown below.

x. Earth Resistance Tester: It is used to test the earth resistance of terminals in an area.

The various ways in which power could be read is by

i.
Watt Reading This is used for resistive measurement.
ii.
Reactive Reading This is used for inductive measurement.
iii.
Apparent Reading This is used for capacitive measurement.
We were also introduced to Insulation tester.
