CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Introduction
In this chapter I will explain about the company (KADCO) in general which including history,
customers, activities, employees, organizational structure and the level of technology used by the
company.
Historical Background of Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO)
Kilimanjaro International Airport was the first international airport to be privatized on 11 March
1998 with shareholding by the Government of Tanzania, McDonald International (UK), The
South African Infrastructure Fund (South Africa), and Inter Consult of Tanzania. This formed the
company Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO).
The government opted to take minority shares (24%) in the company to protect its interest in the
property. And as a condition quorum for any board meeting is not reached if a Government board
member was not present.
Objectives of KADCO
1. To develop KIA to an internationally recognized, high quality destination for tourism and
business traffic.
2. To make KIA the gateway to a new Africa achieved through facilities managed, operated
and maintained to international standard.
3. To make repair to KIA that will bring the airport to a level sufficient to meet International
Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
4. To incorporate into the airport a well developed maintenance program.
5. To institute a management structure this is positioned to advance efficiency and
productivity of the airport as a profitable public\private sector joint venture.
Vision statement of KADCO

To be the preferred private Airport operator in Africa.

Mission Statement of KADCO
Focusing on world class service provision.
Type of the organization
The airport in the partnership type of the organization which became the first international
airport to be privatized in Africa in 1998 and is now operated by Kilimanjaro Airport
Development Company (KADCO), a consortium comprised of UK base management,
engineering and development company Mott Mc Donald International, A South African
Infrastructure Fund, The Government of Tanzania and Inter Consult Ltd, A Tanzanian
engineering firm.
Major services
KADCO develops and maintains standards and procedures for the handling of passengers and
baggage at airports, including all forms and regulations. The KADCO provides overall policy
direction and general management for all airport services activities including the financial
performance of its products and services. The KADCO is also active in the development of
industry procedures for passenger and baggage security and departure control.

Organization Structure

Figure 1.1 organizational structures.

Number of employees
This organization has 207 employees located in different professions and in different levels of
position within an organization.
Activities
The air transport system is characterized by three main, strongly interrelated, stakeholders: the
airport operators, the airlines and the users including passengers, airlines and freight. Forecasting
air transport demand is extremely difficult because it does not only depend on the transport
supply including routes and frequency but also on socio-economic characteristics.
The main parameters to be considered in an airport demand analysis are:
Arriving, generating and transit annual passengers, for national and
international traffic;
Annual movements per aircraft and operation type;
Peak hour movements and peak hour passengers;
Fleet mix characteristics;
Number of visitors;
Freight and mail processed;
Socioeconomic indicators of the airport catchment area, as economic growth
rate.
Security purposes

Level of technology

Customers
The customers are not only the passengers who fly through an airport but also the family, friends
and colleagues who drop off and pick up passengers who also directly use the airports services

and products, and those of an airports intermediaries where by business passengers differ from
leisure passengers. The passengers include both national and international.

CHAPTER TWO

ACTIVITIES PERFORMED
Introduction
In this chapter will explain all the activities that I performed in my training in detail which
includes works, experience gained, the challenges met and the solution of the challenges. As a
student it was a nice time and experience to get what I have gained and face all that I have ever
faced during my field work which has given me a new picture how the world of IT outside the
class is.
Placement in the organization
I was trained in the department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which deal
with all functionality of the information and communication equipments within the whole
organization.
Working environment
I had a very nice working environment where we were only two students in the office which
made our consideration and supervision of the field work to be full and strong team work with
the other student I was with. It was very friendly to the students and the supervisors which
opened the doors for me to learned more than what I ever expected. This has made a very good
experience. Above all the workers were very cooperative to the us which made the work be very
nice.
Tasks and duties
The broad function of ICT office is to be responsible for finding and correction software,
hardware and network problems for computer users.
The following are the primary duties and responsibility of the office;
i.
ii.
iii.

Install and maintain antivirus programs and ensure that are current effective;
Maintaining IT systems security, back-up and recovery systems;
Perform preventive maintenance to all computer and network hardware on regular basis;

iv.

Ensure consistent implementation of safety management system within the section and

v.

viii.

ensure that proper records and documentation are kept;

Fix computer equipment, which could also include printers and scanners (peripherals);
Train new user on new systems or software applications;
Ensure there is firm framework for information flow internally and externally;
Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the ICT manager.

The above mentioned duties and responsibilities also include checking of the X-ray machines
which are used for the security purpose and the communications including phones and the
displays which are for the advertisements in the airport from the database.
The duties and tasks that were assigned to me were all of my interest and I felt great for me to
perform all of them most of them were challenging because I did not have the practical
experience with them but because I have performed them practically now it is well with me.
Moreover one of my best part of Information technology is network an system administration
which involve the monitoring of the system and I met it during my field and I enjoyed it because
each morning we had to go through the whole organization and check that each part of the
system is working properly and after that whenever the problem happens within an organization
we were there to solve it additionally to me was knowing how the telephone were connected and
used.
Measure up of the demand
All the demands of the assigned duties that were given to me I reached the expected standards
though in the beginning it was challenging. For more to explain see the log books attached. The
explanation will base on some of the challenging tasks, analytical requirements and creativity.
Challenging tasks
I met many challenging tasks which I had no theoretical and practical knowledge which include
those of include that of x-ray maintenance, telephone maintenance, installation of the television
channels which I learned the there. The tasks which were challenging but I had theoretical
knowledge and not practical including logo display on the database systems, laptop speakers
could work, printers could not work and acting as an administrator in the and networking them

which I had theory knowledge. I managed them all though it took time for me to accomplish
them all.
Analytical requirements;
The tasks had logical reasoning to the requirements in my training to make me manage IT office
as an administrator and possible works to be given. For example as the office we dealt all works
of the IT and telecommunication which included telephones and x-ray machines which were the
given to the department from the department of the telecommunication. This gave me extra
knowledge and taught me to be flexible in my carrier.
Creativity;
Most of the time I faced the unfamiliar problem and my supervisor taught me that computer is
just like the human body and I as the IT technician I am the doctor so the first thing is to know
what the problem is then this gave me strength and creativity which increased my knowledge
whenever the problem comes to solve for I was taught that when you know the problem, it not a
problem anymore, thus gives me strength to know the solution according the knowledge given in
the class and that given at the training site.
Problem faced
I faced very few problems in executing the task and duties which were assigned to me during my
training.
Lust equipments
The problems are that some of the equipment were made long time this is to say they were lust
and they need to be change to meet the need of the users because currently most of the time we
had to repair time to time.
Electricity problem
Electricity was another problem where there was no electricity all the time (assured electricity)
and sometimes did not last for long.

Internet problem from the ISP

Sometimes internet was loaded and become very much slow and sometimes in was totally not
available to the whole organization from the ISP.
Solutions and recommendations
Lust equipments; we reported and left the process of changing them all.
Electricity problem; it is now processed to have assured of it.
Internet problem: we reported to the ISP.
Expectation
My expectations before going for my training was to meet network, different problems of
computer and all attached to it including scanners, printers, the way the servers are controlled
and to see how do the IT people do their works in general and networking.
I have met what I expected and even more than that this includes the maintenance of the x-ray
machines, maintaining television, security system, telephone and printing of the identification
card and more.
New things learned
There were many things that have learned from the training including the internal parts of
different equipments including that of printer, maintenance of the x-ray machines, security
system, telephone, maintaining television and printing of the identification card and more.
Gaps between theory and practical
There is big gap between theory and practice this is because technology changes every time
some of the things which seem to do not exist anymore and they are on the way to change now.
From that I have learned is that theory has given me the direction on how things are but practical
is dealing with things as they are in their reality and even more challenges are expected to
happen.

In my carrier is like a doctor who attends to patient and the computer is the patient so it is you to
study the problem at the spot when the problem has been delivered to you some are

Employment prospects
According the time I have been in the organization, works that are there, people within an
organization, the administration of the organization and the working environment at large I
would like to be employed by the organization.
I do think that they would have me as the employee when the chance happens due to how I lived
with them as the trainee.
I got the promise to be employed in the organization.
Relevance of the attachment
My attachment was relevant to my carrier in different aspects as follows
Knowledge
I got both practical and theory which was conducted there. Where by practical
includes the addressing problems, organization and maintaining of works, what I
am needed to do, in different positions within an organization as the IT person and
in theory is the way interaction is done between the my office and other offices
and how to serve people.
Skill development
My skills were very highly developed because I was able to be addressed with
different problems which gave me more knowledge and an current ways of
solving problems, maintaining systems and addition to different devices including
the security systems and telephones.
New attitude
I have new brighter vision on my carrier now than ever, for my mind is widely
opened on the different ways on ICT systems in maintaining, controlling and
solving many of their problems them. I can be sure of what I am doing now and
with confidence.

CHAPTER THREE

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction
In this chapter I will explain on conclusions which will includes major strength, weakness and
the benefits and recommendations will include improvements between the theory and practices,
and the suggestions to improve the program, in terms of planning and operational logistics.
Conclusion
This is the summing up of the practical training. Here I will explain strength, weakness and the
benefits I have got from my practical training.
Major strength of field attachment
There was much strength that that were attached to my field attachment which
include the following
Monitoring the information systems as the administrator of the

systems.
The behavior of the IT person in different positions which include the

manager, officer as well as technician.

The way of addressing the problem given.
Limitations of the IT works within the organization.
The way ICT office interacts with other offices practically.
Individual learning; I learned many thing myself and saw everything
myself and face different challenges which strengthened my

confidence as IT consultant.
I learned working under supervision and self supervision.
Interactivity , I learned how the interact with other IT consultants in
the works

Major weakness of field attachment

I faced one very big weakness which many people do not believe that a girl can
make and be very good in IT consultant.
Benefits derived

Administration; I now can act as the system administrator of the

system both in software and hardware.

Maintenance of ICT positions; I now can maintain different
positions of information and communication technology in an

organization including manager, officer or technician.

Problem addressing; I now know how to addressing different

problems given.
Limitation; I now know the limitations of the IT works within the
organization on the interaction of the ICT office and other offices

in the organization.
Confidence; I now have confidence in ICT works.
Supervision; I now work under supervision, supervise and self

supervision.
Cooperation; I can cooperate with others I solving different
problems.

Recommendation
This is an advice as a course of action after having my practical training. In my
explanation I will base on the improvements between the theory and practices and the

suggestions to improve the program, in terms of planning and operational logistics.

Improvements of the gap between theory and practices
From what I have learned in my practical training I have learned that there is gap
between theory and practical. The following are few to mention
Outdating; Most of what we have learned are outdated this is

because computer technology is growing every day.

Claim based; most of the theories do not fit to the market for the
market now needs passion and creativity than many theories.
Theory takes person to too much claiming which do not help much

on practical world.
Addressing problem; Theory do not prepare a person facing the
problem and how to address the problem which leads to many not
to meet the market. Being multipurpose and flexibility; a good
example is the office I did the work needed me to be multipurpose

and flexible for I met the X-ray machines, televisions, security

cameras, magnetic securities and telephones which I had to

administrate and maintain.

Creativity; most of the theory limits the creativity of the people
there should be subjects which take the creativity of the people.

Despite of all thanks to the theory knowledge it has given me the basic of some of the works I
performed in my training.
Suggestions to improve the program, in terms of planning and operational
logistics.

Outdating; there should be time to time changing of the syllabus to

meet the technology growing.

Claim based; concentrating mostly on the practical world of
different problems to increase speed of work and having many

reference answers of the problems.

Addressing problem; Peoples should be given different problems

as the assignments to do them practically more than theory

Being multipurpose and flexibility; The subjects should be those
that focus on the growth of technology at a time and the predicted

future.
Creativity; the way the teacher are teaching should build the way
to make a person being creative and advising to those who they
discover that they have chosen wrong carrier.

This is like doctors carrier which needs first know what the problem is, for when the problem
is known is no longer problem. Supervisor John Kassian.(KADCO ICT Manager)
