pipelife technology
PSL Inspection Integrity provides a suit of intelligent data gathering technologies with a focus on through life asset
management of piping systems and related facilities. Data is presented in a user friendly format which can be readily
collected and/or imported to other data management or integrity assessment systems.

PIG HOME
The Pig Home system originally developed by PSL, is a technique for
informing the attendant support vessel that the pipeline pig has
arrived at the pipeline receiver facility. A magnetic anomaly detector
switches on a standard external pinger when the selected pig enters
the receiver. Conventionally, the receipt of a pig is not known and
the vessel typically is on station while an additional 15% line volume
is pumped to ensure pig arrival. The system allows the pumping
operation to stop, with the resultant saving of vessel time.
Confirms pig departure/arrival
Eliminates over pumping
Reduction of chemicals discharged to sea
Physical confirmation that the pigs are actually
in the trap before the DSV leaves location
Schedule and cost savings

ACME SMART GAUGE PLATE

The Smart Gauge Plate System (ACME)* confirms gauge plate
condition without the need for pig removal. It signals to a
remote vessel and saves DSV time.
Arrival Condition Monitoring Equipment (ACME) can be
mounted on to a standard gauging pig to provide information
on the gauge plate condition, without the need to disconnect
and recover the receiver to deck and remove the pig for
visual inspection.
Remotely confirms pipeline bore/ovality acceptability
based on gauge plate integrity
Eliminates requirement for calliper runs
Eliminates early pigtrap removal / pig recovery
Enables immediate commencement of hydrotesting
Increases vessel efficiency
Schedule optimisation and cost reduction

IMPACT / SHOCK
LOGGER
The Impact loggers can allow gauge
plate damage location to be cost
effectively and precisely identified.
The impact logger is a device which
measures any abrupt changes in
momentum to the passage of the pig,
as it travels through the pipeline. This
allows operators to pinpoint exactly
where any gauge plate damage has
occurred in the pipeline and also be
able to monitor the efficiency of
their pigging programme. Results can
be reviewed immediately on site in
detail, with the shock loggers
specialised operational and display
software.

Low operating costs and is easily adapted

to fit onto client's pigs
Allows immediate access to recorded data
requiring no post-operational processing

Records location of pipeline weld

beads, pipeline bends, valves,
dents, defects and damage, internal
debris, etc.
Increases vessel efficiency, schedule

ELECTRONIC VALVE ACTUATION

AND MONITORING
The EVA/LVI* system allows a remote vessel to close receiver valves, thus eliminating the requirement
for vessel relocation to close valves for subsequent hydrotest.
EVA is a complementary technique which can be used in conjunction with the ACME and Pig Home
systems to further enhance PSLs range of commissioning related services. EVA is a remote actuator
and signaling system, which integrates with the Pig Home and ACME systems to close the discharge
valve on the pig receiver, once the pig has been received in the trap. This allows the hydrostatic test
to proceed without delay, and without relocating the vessel to close the valve at the receiver.
On receipt of the pig at the receiver, it is possible using the EVA system to remotely close the subsea
discharge valve and begin the hydrotesting of the pipeline. The LVI tool has been designed to confirm
that the valve is in fact shut and not leaking.
The tool is designed to allow any leakage to pass easily through the tool and for this fluid movement
to be detected, and a warning signal put out to the PIG HOME system. An acoustic uplink (pinger)
notifies the vessel that there is a leak and that intervention is required to fully isolate the system.

PIPELINE SYSTEM
3D GEOMETRY / OUT OF
STRAIGHTNESS TOOL (OSCAR)
The OSCAR* pipeline survey pig provides accurate data on pipeline
curvature, and shape, whether due to intentional features of the
pipeline construction, imperfections during pipelay, or movements
which have occurred, whilst in operational service.
Defines a unique pipeline shape in X,Y and Z coordinates
Generates information during the construction/Capex phase:
- Out of straightness (OOS)
- As built coordinates when related to survey data
Generates information during the operational/Opex phase:
- Pipeline lateral/inline movement, i.e. instability, hooking,
expansion, etc.
- Used to determine pipeline vertical movement, i.e. monitor
the effects of scour, spanning and subsidence
Develops a basis for trend monitoring pipeline integrity
Provides a consequence management tool
*not available in the U.K. due to legal action

TDM* - TOUCH DOWN

MONITORING SYSTEM

SUBSEA PRESSURE
TEST LOGGER
PSL can now offer client's a subsea pressure test
logger which will allow vessels to carry out other
activities during the test hold period on submarine
pipelines. As well as increasing vessel flexibility, the
system reduces weather dependency and allows
remote leak checks to be made using one vessel.
Facilitates remote logging of hydrotest
Operation independent of vessel
Alarm triggered at minimum pressure limit
Enables extended hydrotest periods (HSE issue)
Increases vessel efficiency
Schedule optimisation
Cost reduction

DATA LOGGERS
A pipeline's condition, performance and efficiency
can be determined by collecting relevant information
and analysing the results. PSLs range of datalogger
systems provide a low-cost, effective and efficient
first step to achieving this goal. These systems are
self-contained, multi-channel data loggers, each
channel providing independent non-volatile memory
and power supply.
It can be customised to suit client specifications and
can be adapted to fit inside the customers own
range of pigs or is available ready cupped.
The data from these systems also:
Provides pipeline conditioning monitoring
Provides pipeline pressure and temperature profiles

Provides pipeline velocity profile and dynamics

of the pipe
Baseline operational characteristics prior to
intelligent inspection runs

10

pipelife technology
CORROSIVITY TOOLS
Many inspection tools measure the actual wall thickness within a pipeline system. Now for the first time
it is possible to measure the corrosivity of the fluids in the pipeline along with operating temperatures and
pressures, either continuously along the length of the line, or at static pre-defined locations.

MOBILE METAL LOSS RATE

(MMLR) TOOL
The MMLR* tool is designed to be pigged through the line during
normal routine pigging operations, measuring the corrosivity of
the product for its entire passage through the line. This tool is
ideally suited for pipelines with high water content, typically >5%,
and provides a predictive tool for wall thickness loss.
The data from the tool also:
Provides accurate temperature and pressure profiles
Optimises pipeline inhibition programmes
Manages frequency of wall thickness measurement tools
Develops a basis for trend monitoring pipeline integrity
Provides a consequence management tool

PSL- DDL
The PSL Deposited Data Logger (DDL)* allows
sensors to be placed in the pipeline at critical areas,
e.g. low points where water may pool, downstream
of Ts, at the base of risers, etc..
This technology employs a Mother Ship to deposit
into the line at specific points, DDL spheres of
specific sizes, complete with various sensors. These
DDLs stay in place for up to two months measuring
the undisturbed operating environment of the
pipeline. On completion of the agreed period they
are recovered by a subsequent pigging operation.
The data from these DDLs also:
Provides continuous undisturbed corrosivity
reading at static locations
Provides continuous pressure and
temperature reading

Optimises pipeline inhibition programmes

Manages pipeline inhibition frequency
Develops a basis for trend monitoring
Provides a consequence management tool

Provides static measurements from

critical locations
*patents pending

By use of these systems conventional pipeline inspection pigging costs

can be optimised and time between inspections significantly extended.

11

STANDARD PIPELINE CLEANING

Pipelines are intended to convey hydrocarbons or other products in a
problem free operational life, which is intended to last for a minimum
duration equating to the design life of the system. The reality of the
situation however is that throughout the lifespan of the pipeline system,
a range of conditions my occur which may effect the continuing
operational integrity and/or efficiency of the pipeline system.
Different types of maintenance tools help to solve the various problems
encountered. The range of PSL services offers to plan and perform a
cleaning and maintenance program for all individual pipeline situations
and operational parameters. Maintenance cleaning by use of optimal
and efficient cleaning solutions removes deposits and possible debris
and ensures optimum product flow and an efficient pumping operation.
Cleaning is also essential prior to using intelligent inspection tools of
different techniques. Within this service, PSL is using different types of
cleaning pigs such as:

Polly Pigs
Flex-I-Pigs
Bi-Directional Pigs
Bi-Di Brush Pigs
Cup Pigs
D-Scaling Pigs
Sphere Pigs
Custom-made Pigs for
special operations

TIME OF FLIGHT
DIFFRACTION- TOFD
Time of Flight Diffraction, commonly known
as TOFD, is a highly accurate ultrasonic
inspection technology, principally intended
for weld inspection. It is a rapid system that
provides full volumetric coverage of both
weld and heat affected zone, and generates a
real-time image with defects shown in true
location and size for offline interpretation
and measurement. The resulting data can be
interpreted by experienced operators to
provide defect sizing to within +/- 0.1mm.
The data is presented as a 2D grayscale
image, and provides a permanent record of
all parameters used, providing excellent
repeatability.

AUTOMATED ULTRASONIC
TECHNOLOGY
- UT-MAPPING
Corrosion Mapping is a method of producing a full colour graphic
map of a test area, showing different thickness in different colours.
The inspection approach can be performed in alternative ways:
A camera tracks an ultrasonic probe with a LED mounted on it as
it scans over the test area. Positional data from the camera is
combined with the thickness reading obtained, and once processed
this data will create the colour image, or corrosion map of the area
under test. By use of mechanised scanners. The ultrasonic probes
are moved by the scanner unit, which again is controlling the
positional data. This provides an accurate image, showing the data
as a 2D or 3D colourgraphic contour map (or even displayed as a
spreadsheet in certain circumstances).
The ultrasonic based systems above are highly accurate, but
relatively slow methods of inspection. The methods are normally
applied for detail inspection on pipes, pipelines, vessels, etc.

UT-Mapping

19

SCREENING INSPECTION
TECHNOLOGY
- GUIDED ULTRASONIC
A non-destructive screening technique for detecting metal
loss in pipelines and process pipework.
Guided ultrasonic technology screens pipework for metal
loss features such as corrosion and erosion. The technology
is suitable for pipeline and process pipework applications,
as well as road crossings and inaccessible pipework in general.
The technology utilises low-frequency guided ultrasonics
equipment travelling along the pipe, providing 100% coverage
of the pipe-wall. Under normal conditions, tens of meters
of pipework can be inspected from a single location.
Potentially defective areas are precisely located in terms
of distance from the transducer ring. Indications are highlighted for local examination by visual or conventional NDT
methods (set-up time takes only 10 minutes, and each test
typically takes about 10-15 minutes). The defect detection
sensitivity is generally set to the removal or loss of 5-9% of
the cross-sectional area of the pipe (standard report level),
but it is often possible to find smaller defects if required.
All signals can be digitally stored for later analysis,
archiving and comparison with baseline data at a future date
if required.
This new cost-effective means of rapidly screening pipes
and inspecting inaccessible pipework can be used on pipe
diameters from 1" to 24". Other pipe diameters on request.
(new subsea guided ultrasonic under development)
B E N E F I T S
Able to detect metal loss and planar defects,
typically 10s of meters either side of the
inspection point
100% volumetric check of material within the
diagnostic length
Can detect both internal and external metal loss

No coupling media necessary

Sensitivity can be as detection of 5% of cross sectional
area loss. For re-inspections, sensitivity down to 1% of
cross section of area loss
Will be able to operate from 1 inch to 24 inch OD pipes
Can be operated by battery

use of empirical factors.

SOLV covers the maintenance planning for
coated and insulated surfaces, including
passive fire protection and penetrations.
Using our experience, and with the aid of our
dedicated software programs, we can readily
provide the SOLV fabric maintenance
service, which may be individually adapted to
each of our customers specifications.

unit break-down
In order to structure and organise
maintenance information, the installation
is divided into practical units, called Work
Packages. Each work package consists of
a number of painted and insulated items,
which are recorded with area, condition,
etc., on the basis of which the planning of
preventive and selective maintenance is
subsequently performed.

25

PSL Inspection Integrity designs long-term condition monitoring and

annual maintenance programs for on and offshore installations.
SOLV has proven to be efficient for both large and complex
constructions, as well as for small and less complex units.
Documentation includes technical specifications, scope of work and
cost estimates. Spread-sheet versions such as Lotus are also available.
In order to achieve cost-optimisation for this service, we normally
implement preventive and/or selective maintenance programs. This
means that maintenance is performed on relatively "good" paint film
condition i.e. we maintain the paint film to a minimum acceptable
level, not the steel underneath. During the lifetime of the installation
or plant, this maintenance practice has been documented to reduce
costs by up to 50%.The SOLV software was introduced in 1993, and
is now used on more than 60 on and offshore installations.
