CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE


INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the study
Eating is an alternative way of releasing stress and bad vibes from the
body; it also provides energy to boost our immune system. Moreover, eating
allows a person to look healthier and to benefit from the decrease in the
chances of getting diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. In fact, the
native Filipinos eat more than three times a day including snacks or merienda
in between heavy meals.
According to the 2012 census of Philippine Business and Industry
Accommodation and Food Service Activities for Establishments, 71.9% out of
the 6, 229 establishments are restaurants and mobile food service activities.
This proves to show how much Filipinos tend to be food enthusiasts. One
example of such food service is the innovation of Pizza Cones in Manila.
With this, the proponents have decided to conduct the study on the
feasibility and practicability of the product "Pizza Cone Ice Cream" in
canteens of University of San Jose-Recoletos, Main-campus, VELEZ and
Cebu Doctors University in order to cater the physiological needs of
individuals and also reach personal satisfaction. This product is known for its
catchphrase pizza on the go because it is literally a convenient snack. Its
cone, unlike the ordinary ice cream wafer cones, is made of pizza crust. With
this 2-in-1 snack, one bite allows you to taste both pizza and soft vanilla ice
cream inside.

Thus, this study aims to address the college students and faculty
members physiological need to eat something despite busyness.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study is expressed in order to ascertain the practicability and
feasibility of selling Pizza Cone Ice Cream in canteens of University of San
Jose-Recoletos Main-campus, VELEZ and Cebu Doctors University.
Specifically, the following queries were answered:

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
College life is known to be a step closer to the real world. It is a stage
where you need to exert more effort and double your time in accomplishing
the tasks especially if you are a graduating student. There are sleepless
nights because of outputs and assignments to be passed in order to meet the
deadliest deadline. Sleep late at night to study for major exams in order to get
a passing remark and to meet during weekends for a practice. Because of this
they can no longer have other time to relax and hang out with friends. With
this, the study is anticipated to give color and pleasure to a persons day-today activities at school. At the same time, this study is also anticipated to
impart significant benefits and advantages to the following sectors:
Researchers
This study has allowed the researchers to boost their confidence in
facing different personnel for the gathering and analysis of data and for the
fulfillment of this study. Each researcher has developed a deeper
understanding of the actual establishment of a business which includes the
formulation and manufacture of their proposed product. The study shows how
difficult the real world situation is and this serves as a preparation in facing
diverse people. It gives opportunity to expand learning in their field of
expertise. This study is also an avenue for the researchers to apply everything
they have learned in their accounting subjects and to incorporate lessons,
under

the

mathematic

module

statistics,

in

sampling.

Proper

time

management has also been achieved in order to promptly satisfy the


demands for the fulfillment of the requirements of this study despite the
differences in the class and work schedules. Throughout the study, the
researchers were able to establish and solidify unity, teamwork and friendship
among the members of the group. And lastly, they were able to understand
each others strengths and weaknesses which helped them in the division of
labor.
Consumers
The product is entitled to provide a handy snack for people or
consumers who are usually on the go. In selling this product, the customer
may be able to satisfy both hunger and craving just by one snack alone. It is
designed to catch the interest of consumers so they may try something out of
the ordinary. They may now find a new place to enjoy with friends and families
and at the same time devour in something different. Furthermore, it is also a
great opportunity for them to indulge in something innovative that comes with
a reasonable price.
Future Researchers
This study serves as the future proponents reference and source of
information as they resort in gathering relevant data for a new study. They
may use this study as a guide when they decide to manufacture a product or
formulate a service in a similar field. In effect, they may also make use of this
study to make modifications and revisions and enrich the benefits that may be
received from this product.

Academe
Aside from the knowledge that can be obtained, students may immerse
themselves in a simulation of firsthand business experiences such as
conversing with various businessmen and consumers, formulating their own
business plans and strategies and troubleshooting problems that may be
faced when immersing in this study. This also serves as a great help to faculty
and administrators in order to check the students application of classroom
knowledge

and

learning

and

to

reassess

teaching

methodologies.

Furthermore, this may also be used as basis in editing the course program.
Potential Salesmen
The study will help the business enthusiasts to check the practicability
and profitability of selling this kind of product. They may make use of this
study if they wish to sell a similar product and make more innovations in order
to catch more customers.
Financial Institutions
The results that may be derived from this study may assist the financial
institutions when they decide whether or not this kind of product is worthy to
be given financial help. Through this study, the financial institutions will be
provided with data that gives information regarding the liquidity and solvency
of the business.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The study covered several aspects necessary to determine and
evaluate the profitability and feasibility of the proposed project. It also defines
the study type and sub-type, research questions, hypotheses, independent
and dependent variables, experimental design, and, if applicable, data
collection methods and a statistical analysis plan. This design serves as a
detailed outline of what data is to be included what research instruments are
to be used and the method to be observed in data analysis.
Research Environment
The researchers have decided to rent a small space inside the canteen
where they can put a stall of the business. Most of the students buy their
snacks in the canteen as they are assured that it is safe an clean.
Research Methodology and Instruments
Firsthand data should be collected in order to back up the reliability of
this study. Hence, an effective and efficient method should be used in the
collection and analysis of raw data in order to derive results. The research
methodology that will be used in the study is a descriptive-survey method
which makes use of a questionnaire personally formulated by the researchers
in order to extract the necessary data.
Limitation of the Study
The scope of the research is concerned with the production of Pizza
Cone Ice Creams only within the university canteens. Specifically, the
research includes only the workers coming from five selected establishments
in the area. Production and selling of the product, together with all its facilities
and machineries, shall be contained the principal place of business only. This

study is limited to the workers from the selected business establishments


alone; people who frequent other commercial businesses are not covered in
this research.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
This study may contain unfamiliar terms which block the readers
comprehension regarding the essence of the project. Thus, the proponents
have accumulated a list of words for readers in order to avoid
misinterpretation and confusion throughout the study and to reach the
proponents target in the study.
Pizza
It is a dish originating from Italy which consists of baked round dough
and is topped with cheese and tomato sauce with the addition of mushrooms,
sausage, or ham.
Pizza crust
This is the bread or dough that is used as the foundation of pizza. It is
also molded to form a cone for the proposed product.
Pizza cone ice cream
It is a 2-in-1 snack that contains both pizza and ice cream within a
cone-shaped pizza crust.

Electric mixer
It is a kitchen utensil which uses a gear-driven mechanism to rotate a
set of beaters in a bowl containing the food to be prepared.
Lycopene
Coming from the neo-Latin lycopersicum, the tomato species, is a
bright

red carotene and carotenoid pigment

in tomatoes and

other

red

fruits

and

and

phytochemical found

vegetables,

such

as

red carrots, watermelons, gac, and papayas, although not in strawberries,


or cherries.
Knead
It is the massaging of dough using bare hands in order to soften or
moisten the bread.
Yeast
It is a fermenting agent that is used to raise the dough. It is popularly
used with flour when making dough.
