Intoduction
Internship for student has been used as a traditional instrument to increase

employability of graduates with connected demand for the labor market. It is an

integrated strategy for the students to the economic activities. It is one of the best
training methods because it is planned, organized and conducted at worksite.
The objective of On-Job-training (OJT) is directly related to the teaching
learning experiences and should help the student to enhance their knowledge and
skills acquired in the classroom in order to become more responsive to the demands
of Mechanical Engineering Profession; to develop the value of professionalism, love
of work and commitment to people they serve; to apply the relevant theories of
Mechanical Engineering Profession and Code of Ethics into practice; to feel and
experience the actual world of work.
This narrative report covers the company background where the student
applied for, the training details including personal development, interpersonal
relationships the student had with co-workers and supervisors, the technical analysis
describing the work details of the training and lastly, the engineering program
specific output requirements derived from the training. The training assessment in
relation to student outcomes and mechanical engineering assessment were the last
area of the report.

Company Background
Shell's corporate presence in the Philippines dates back to 1914 when Shell

organized a trading office in the Philippines. Business then largely involved the
importation and sale of kerosene mainly for household use in Manila and outlying
areas.
By 1940, spurred by the growing Philippine economy, a sizeable range of
Shell products was being sold to more areas in the Philippines through installations
and depots set up in strategic points throughout the country.

In 1960, Shell built its first crude refinery in Tabangao, Batangas, which
commenced operations in 1962. This made Shell a complete downstream business
engaged not only in trading, transport and distribution, but also in the manufacture
and refining of petroleum products. The birth of the refining era was accompanied by
further business expansion. Shell pursued interests in the marketing of chemicals
and crop protection products to support the fast growth in the agricultural sector
during the 1960s.
In the late 1970s, Shell began its involvement in upstream activities (oil and
gas exploration and production) to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil.
To meet the rising demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Asia, Shell
began in the early 1980s the construction of a refrigerated LPG terminal that would
supply domestic LPG needs of the Philippines and its Asian neighbours. The first of
its kind in Asia, Shell's refrigerated LPG terminal began operations in 1983.
In the conduct of its business, Shell has always been conscious of its
obligations to society. In 1982, Shell formed the Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. to
begin its direct participation in social development through industrial and agricultural
skills training, livelihood and entrepreneurship training, promotion of science and
technology education, and other community development programs around Shell
work sites.
In 1986, Pilipinas Shell took over majority ownership of Philippine Petroleum
Corporation, the country's only lube oil refinery. In 1990, Shell Philippines Exploration
B.V. (SPEX) signed a service contract with Occidental Philippines Inc. to invest in oil
and gas exploration in offshore Northwest Palawan. Using state-of-the-art
technology in one of the deepest waters in the world, the joint venture discovered
significant oil and gas reserves in the Malampaya/Camago field.
Further strengthening its commitment to meet the country's increasing fuel
needs, Pilipinas Shell began in 1993 the construction of a bigger and more modern
refinery adjacent to its existing facility in Tabangao. Completed in 1995, the 110,000
barrels per day refinery boosted Shell's refining capacity to 155,000 barrels per day,

becoming Pilipinas Shell's share in helping the country move forward to a better
future as envisioned in the government's Philippines 2000 program.
The new refinery enables Pilipinas Shell to produce petroleum products which
are more responsive to the needs of the country and the environment.
Its energy-efficient processing facility enables it to produce more middle
distillates to augment the country's diesel fuel requirements. The new refinery is also
capable of producing unleaded gasoline and low sulphur diesel.
This 1998, SPEX begins the development and construction of the Malampaya
field for the commercial production of natural gas in the country by the year 2002.
The gas-to-power project is seen as the largest and most significant investment in
the history of Philippine business, with a total financing requirement of approximately
US$2.0 billion. It is expected to generate a substantial income for the Philippine
government over the life of the field, reduce reliance on imported fuels from 20% to
30%, and provide an alternative environment-friendly fuel for power generation.

Training Details
a. Personal
On-the Job Training for a student have helped her to become a better
individual. She knew how to be independent in making wise decisions and was
able to cope up and manage different situation. She learned to trust herself and
was confident enough with her ideas and thoughts that contributed for the
production of her team. Another thing was she learned to speak up and ask
questions whenever she is in doubt to avoid mistakes. Furthermore, she was able
to prove herself that she is capable of doing her work correctly and be hired in the
near future.
b. Interpersonal
Internship at Shell offers a good working experience in the student. In
addition, the trainee got the chance to be with different people. She encountered
different traits of every employee but eventually learned how to deal with it. She

was able to communicate effectively between groups in different departments and

showed a good relationship within her peers and other employees.

c. Technical
Training at Shell Petroleum Corporation was superb. The Trainee learned
different areas of the refinery, how the plant works and other technical terms and
aspects. She familiarized herself with different types of pumps and was able to
identify parts of it and learned the function of each. She was taught with different
tools for assembling and disassembling pump and other preventive maintenance
procedure. She got the chance to monitor bearing vibration using Microlog and
was able to know different alerts of bearing vibration. She was able to know how
the rotalign works for aligning shaft at the site. She also learned hydraulic testing
for determining leaks.
Trainee was fortunate enough to attend different trainings like bike training
and H2S trainings. Similarly, she also had trainings at shell online university.
Trainings in life saving rules and chemical handling were two of these trainings.
The most important thing that the trainee learned from this company was
Safety. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation has an admirable reputation in
taking care of the safety of all its employee and contractors at most priority. The
trainee learned a lot in safety during tool box talk, site visits, inspection etc and
felt safe even in hazardous areas and situations. In relation to safety, there are
TSTI to be filled up and a permit before the workers can proceed to any activity.
That is the Total safety task instruction. This is applicable not only for trainees but
for all the persons involved. This will help workers to identify hazards of the work
to be done and be able to perform the work safely.
d. Program Specific
The trainee realized the importance of internship in increasing her
knowledge about the program she has taken. During her training at shell, she
was exposed to different machineries and equipment inside the refinery that
