2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

China seized control of the raw silk market. In 2014, China exported 6
thousand tonnes of raw silk totaling 340 million USD, 9% under the previous
year. Its primary trading partner was India, where it supplied 46% of its total
raw silk exports in value terms, accounting for 99% of Indias total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of raw silk. Over this period,
exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical
terms, the difference was less pronounced.
Italy and Romania were among the other main global suppliers of raw silk in
2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were
Malaysia

(+60% per

year)

and

Germany

(+15%

per

year).

Romania

significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, Chinas top 5 trading partners were India, Romania, Viet Nam, Japan
and Italy, with a combined 86% share of Chinas raw silk exports. The share of
Romania increased significantly (+10 percentage points), while the share of
India illustrated negative dynamics (-16 percentage points).
