COURSE DESCRIPTION:
“Succeed in College” incorporates self examination and reflection, journaling and discussion to
promote future college success. The principles taken from the class, if assimilated, will also create a
foundation for a positive, meaningful and successful life. Topics include college expectations,
resources, and general success principles such as: personal responsibility, self awareness and
motivation, the mastery of self management, employing interdependence, setting the foundation for
lifelong learning, goal-setting, critical thinking and emotional intelligence.
College-Wide Abilities:
1. Think logically and critically and apply the learned information to self
Course Content:
SUCCESS STRATEGIES: Identification of specific success principles and related strategies. Self
evaluation and plan for cognitive/behavioral adjustments when appropriate for successful
learning and living.
COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT: Expectations, services and resources.
CRITICAL THINKING: The thinking process as required in higher education
COURSE FEATURES/POLICIES:
Academic Honesty: All work is to represent own efforts rather than to be copied from another.
Cheating will result in an F grade for the assignment or test. For the academic honesty policy, refer to
the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities found on the college’s website.
Financial Aid: Students receiving financial aid should ALWAYS check with Financial Aid prior to
withdrawing, signing an incomplete contract, changing to an audit, or receiving an F or V grade in a class.
Class Participation and Attendance: Students in this course are expected to attend every class and
participate in small and large group discussion. Not “being here” physically, emotionally or mentally is
in direct conflict with the premise and philosophy of success principles. Due to this specific correlation,
absences will be treated seriously. Please inform the instructor or group members (if appropriate)
ahead of time when an absence must occur. In certain circumstances an absence will be excused.
Missed exams and/or Assignments: There will be a quiz given with each chapter. A quiz score resulting
in less than 70% (C) will deduct 5 points from the student’s point total to date. Late journals will be
accepted for review but will only be worth 1 point each. Please inform the instructor if you are having
difficulty keeping up with the journaling. Missed Wise Choice Presentations will result in a 15 point
reduction in grade plus an additional 15 point penalty and cannot be made up as time does not permit.
Expectations: Class attendance, journaling, reading the text, participation in discussion and a final
presentation are mandatory.
Evaluation: Your grade will be comprised of 4 parts totaling 200 points as follows:
