Question 1.

How does your

magazine (front cover)
represent particular social
groups?
By making the puff a
very simple white
circle, I thought it was
more attention
grabbing against the
bright red backdrop
and, therefore, would
catch the eye of the
reader.

The typeface Sketch Block was the

typeface I opted for because I
thought that it related to college and
school as this is a similar typeface to
that of my GCSE text book covers. I
think this makes it clear that this
magazine is for a college audience
because of the style of the typeface.

I chose to position
my models in the
bottom/mid left area
of the cover because
this would give the
cover lines a onecolour backdrop so
they could be read
clearly. It later
transpired that my
image was too small
so I had to resize it
and change the
colour of the cover
lines from white to a
dark blue to ensure
that they could be
read easily
especially the two
overlapping
Melissas arm.

In conclusion, I think that my magazine represents

college students as a social group by the bright,
vibrant colour scheme and the simplicity I have
incorporated into the design of my front cover.

The red backdrop

on the cover is
the original
backdrop I had
my models
standing in front
of. I thought that
by having a one
colour backdrop,
the addition of the
other elements of
the magazine
would be made
simpler as I could
stick to a specific
colour scheme of
red, blue and
white.
I used fairly
colloquial
and informal
language in
order to
appeal to my
intended
audience
college
students. By
doing this, I
have
ensured that
my magazine
appeals to its
audience
while still
being easy to
understand.

I chose to put the barcode, issue details

and price all in one corner so as to make
it easy for people to find this information
instead of having to look over the entire
page to find out how much it costs.
Additionally, the size of the barcode I
think means that all this important
information is easily visible.

Question 1. How does your

magazine (contents page)
represent particular social
groups?

I decided to include a
flannel panel to
address the audience
directly. I think that by
doing this, the
audience feels more
connected to the
magazine and will
therefore respond
positively to it and are
more likely to want to
buy it.

I included contact
information for
social media to this
page. Social media
is used widely by
many people most
of which being
teenagers/students.
I think that because
of this fact, it was
obvious to me that I
would have to
include this
information.

Also, blue holds a
connotation of calm,

a positive mind set
when they read.
The informal
language I used
on this page was
to address
students using
language they
would use every
day. I think that by
writing in an
informal style, the
audience can
understand the
magazine better,
thus making it
easier to read and
navigate through.
I positioned the
folios in places in
each photograph
where they would
be easily visible.
Additionally, by not
putting the folios in
the same place on
each photo, the
page is made a
little more
interesting and
unconventional.

photos, the college itself is represented as a
friendly, positive environment and a place you
want to be at.

Question 2. What aspects of

your work are you pleased
with and why?
In my opinion, the
photograph is definitely the
aspect of the cover that I
am pleased with most. I
think that the expressions
on my models faces
express the environment
and atmosphere of the
college positively and
represent students as
cheerful, dedicated and
positive people as well.

I think that the hardest part (but

without a doubt, the part I am
proudest of) of designing the
contents page was creating the
page topics. Considering that
this is only a magazine for a
college and they tend not to be
very thick publications, I chose
to keep my page quantity
smaller rather than larger.
What this enabled me to do
was really be imaginative with
what students would want to
read about. I thought that an
agony aunt page would be a
good idea as it would give
students advice on subjects
they may not be comfortable
discussing otherwise.

The fact that I didnt

conform to the
conventional title of
Contents on this
page is something I
am particularly
pleased with. By the
addition of a different
title, my contents
page took on a more
relaxed style
something that would
undoubtedly appeal
to students.

I think that putting the

issue date, the price and
the barcode in one corner
was a particularly good
idea. This means that all
the additional information
is in one place and the
audience wouldnt have to
search the page very
thoroughly to find it.

I am extremely pleased
with the masthead. In my

was not the most popular

Question 6. If you could
choose the name for the
magazine, what would
you call it?. I created the
masthead itself using
Piktochart and a font
called Sketch Block.
This font reminded me of
my GCSE textbooks
because this font was
used on the cover of
them this is mainly
what influenced my
decision on typeface.

Question 3. What aspects of

your work do you think could
be improved on and why?

I think that I would have

changed the shape of the
puff to something a little
more interesting than a
circle. Using a more exciting
shape would grasp the
audiences attention and
draw them in, encouraging
them to buy and read the
magazine.

Additionally, through feedback,

I was made aware that some
people would have wanted
there to be more pages to the
magazine. This would have
been very simple to amend
because all I would have to do
was include more folios and
maybe remove one of the
photographs so I could fit more
pages onto the contents.

When I received feedback, it

was clear to me that the red
backdrop didnt appeal to
everyone. This was the
original backdrop when I
conducted my photo shoot.
Also, some people said that
the blue coverlines were
quite difficult to read against
the red so in response, I
would change the coverlines
to a grey or another colour
that would clash less with the
backdrop but would still be
visible over Melissas arm.

One particular thing that

was mentioned when I
received feedback was
that the folios on the
photographs were difficult
to find as a result of them
being in different places
on each photo. To resolve
this, I would have put the
numbers in coloured
boxes and positioned
them in one of the
corners of the photograph
so they are easily
recognisable at a glance.
