Dearborn starts 2014 outdoor pool season this weekend

Dearborn's 2014 outdoor pool season will be kicking off this Saturday at the Dunworth, Ford Woods
and Camp Dearborn pools this Saturday.

The remaining outdoor pools will open June 14. Swimming lesson sessions are scheduled to start
June 16 at all pools in Dearborn.
"We will try to offer swimming lessons at all the city's outdoor pools, depending on what the demand
is," said John Kerr, who is in charge of the Dearborn Recreation & Parks' publicity and marketing.
"They are in the morning."
Construction is underway this year to install a spray park in Hemlock Park, to replace the former
Hemlock pool. There are no plans to open the Crowley Park pool this year, Kerr said, while the city
looks at what major repairs may be needed to reopen that facility (the city confirmed in early June
that the 52-year-old pool was still "being evaluated" to determine the type and cost of repairs to
open it).
Dunworth and Ford Woods will hold open swimming from noon-6 p.m. starting May 24, and continue
these same hours on all weekends and holidays through June 13 (weekday hours through June 13
will be 4-7 p.m.). The Camp Dearborn pool's hours of operation from tomorrow until June 14 will be
from 4-8 p.m. weekdays, from 11-7 p.m. Saturday, and from 11-5 p.m. Sunday (the dates and hours
for opening the pool after the June 14 start of the full camping season are yet to be finalized).
The Lapeer, Summer-Stevens and Ten Eyck pools hold open swimming from 1-6 p.m. daily from June
14-August 17, while Dunworth will be open 1-8 p.m. weekdays and holidays in that time (noon-8 p.m.
on weekends), and Ford Woods will be open 12-6 p.m. daily. From August 18-Sept. 1, Dunworth and
Ford Woods will be open 4-7 p.m. weekdays, and noon-6 p.m. weekends and holidays.
Dunworth will hold Monday-Thursday swimming lessons in Session 1 (June 16-26), Session 2 (June
30-July 10), Session 3 (July 14-24) and Session 4 (July 28-August 7). The Ford Woods, Lapeer,
Summer-Stevens and Ten Eyck pools will hold daily swimming lessons only in Sessions 1-3 (all
swimming lesson sessions at all pools will conduct make-up classes on Fridays, if required). The

Camp Dearborn pool activities will be limited to open swimming.

Pool tags must be sewn on swimsuits prior to admittance, and must be purchased for swim lessons.
Those not planning to use the outdoor pools regularly can elect to pay daily admission to use a pool
instead. The pool tags are not valid at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center indoor pool.
Residents can purchase pool tags and sign up for swim lesson sessions at the service desk of the
Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave. (the desk is open from 8-6 p.m.
weekdays). The fee for swimming lessons is $55 ($65 for non-residents). Pool tags are $45 for youth
and seniors (ages 6-17 mus present a school-issued ID card, and ages 60 and over must present
proof of residency), $55 for adults (ages 18-59 must present proof of residency), $25 for preschool
(ages 3- must present proof of residency and a copy of the birth certificate, while children under 3
are free), $100 for non-residents, and $125 for two adults and all their children under 18 (driver's
license for adults and birth certificates for children must be presented).
Those only looking to pay a daily fee at a pool will be charged $7 ($10 for non-residents) for
admission to the Lapeer, Summer-Stevens, Ten Eyck, and Ford Woods. The Dunworth Pool will
charge $9 ($12 for non-residents). Admission will also require a school ID, picture ID for adults.
The Camp Dearborn pool is only open to those who either rent camping sites in the camp, or bring
their own recreational vehicle or tent to camp at the facility. There is no additional charge for using
the pool.
The swimming lessons are given Mondays through Thursdays for the following swimming skill levels:

During three special aquatic events this summer, Dunworth will be closed for open swimming
(though spectators are always welcome): from June 13-15 for the U.S.S. Swim Meet, July 22 for the
annual City Swimming Championships, and July 30 for the annual synchronized swim show. People
can check their pool of interest to see if that pool (or a portion of it) may close earlier due to
Recreation Department use, lessons on learning to swim, or special aquatic events.
All pool patrons must have a swimsuit with a liner (with special swim diapers for infants) to enter the
pool area. The city recommends all swimmers and non-swimmers under the age of nine be
accompanied by a responsible person 16 years or older.

For further information on this year's outdoor pool program, Kerr directs people to call 943-2350
(and pick the pool option), or go to the website www.fordcenter.com, at which he said the summer
brochure would be posted within 10 days.
"It should be up by the end of next week," Kerr said.
