About the project: The energy situation in India is unique. Indias share of global CO2 emissions is 3%, but on per capita
basis it is much lower than the world average. Coal is used in 69% of electricity generation (52% of the installed capacity)
and 70% of the energy needs of manufacturing and process industries like steel, cement, fertilizers and others are met
through coal. India has made tremendous strides in renewable energies. CO2 sequestration research in India started in
2004 through industry and government support. The National Programme on CO2 Sequestration (NPCS) research has
been initiated from the inter-sectoral perspectives of pure and applied research with the participation of academic
institutions and R&D laboratories across the country.
The present project aims at systematic extensive study on growing green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, Botryococcus
braunii and Scenedesmus quadricuada with industrial flue gas collected in canisters containing CO2 collected from the
industry along with sewage collected from JNTUH. Continuous cultivation of microalgae in 200L raceway ponds and
100L photobioreactor using sewage and industrial boiler flue gas-CO2 for biomass and lipid yields need to be pursued.
Scale - up studies will be pursued in which microalgae will be grown at the industrial site in a 10,000L capacity raceway
pond with the flue gas emissions available at the industry along with the sewage generated from the same industry. The
research work involves an inter-disciplinary approach involving microbiology and environmental sciences which helps the
candidate to be trained in the upcoming areas of Bio fuels/ Environmental remediation. Selected candidates are expected
to register for Ph.D.
