N League

Newtons Olympics - Junior A

I.

Overview

N League is a one-day event that aims to widen the knowledge of Grade 10A students on
Newtons Laws of Motion. This event shall focus on the real life applications of the laws and
the technicalities behind them. The event is based on the blueprints of the famous game
Minute to Win It in an Olympic style. Participants shall be competing for various awards as
they practice sportsmanship. The event is following a superhero theme.
II.

Objectives

III.

To allow students to hone their fitness and sports skills with the practice of
camaraderie through games and activities
To widen the knowledge of the participants about the real life applications of
Newtons Laws of Motion
To enhance the grasp of students on Newtons Laws of Motion
To give a platform of learning outside the four walls of a classroom

General Mechanics
1. The participants shall be divided into nine teams, with four to five members per
teams.
2. Each team shall undergo a series of sports activities related to Newton's Laws of
Motion. There shall be ten stations comprising the entire event, with nine different
challenges to complete for every team.
3. Aside from the physical challenges to complete, a "brain buster" question related
to the scientific concepts presented shall be introduced before the Olympics
proper. In order to find the answer to this certain question, they must unscramble
the first letters of their answers from each of the stations (to be discussed
further). To keep track of their answers, a worksheet shall be provided.
4. Each of the stations shall feature a simple riddle at the end of the activity. They
must take note of their answers to these riddles because the first letters of these
riddles will be unscrambled to find the answer to the brain buster question.
5. Each team shall be given five minutes to complete every station. The breakdown
is as follows: one minute for the orientation and explanation of physics concepts,
three minutes for the activity proper, and one minute for the riddle.
6. After five minutes in a particular station, all teams shall rotate and move on to the
next part of their challenge.
7. Teams that will be able to answer the "brain buster" question accurately shall be
given additional incentives which are additional 100 points.

8. Each station shall follow a point system structured around rubrics/criteria

depending on the nature of the activity. Points may be gained in every station by
accomplishing each activity successfully.
9. The station leaders shall have with them a scoresheet to monitor the
performance of every group.
10. Once all stations have been completed by all teams, the number of points per
group shall be tallied by the station leaders in order to determine the winners.
11. Special awards shall be given to the following participants (to be judged by the
leaders per station):
VI.

The Avengers (Overall Champion)

Professor X (Brain Buster Champion)
Superman (Best Male Athlete)
Wonder Woman (Best Female Athlete)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Models of Sportsmanship)
Justice League (Most Enthusiastic / Participative Team)

arranged in two rows with eight cups each. The
distance between the two rows must be equal and
fixed.
2. There must be two participants for this game.
They may formulate their own strategy or assign
the number of ping pong balls to transfer.
3. The ping pong balls must be put in the cups of the
row nearest to the people participating.
4. Within two minutes, the participants must be able
to blow the ping pong balls from one cup to
another, completing all eight.
5. Each ping pong ball that is successfully
transferred from one cup to another corresponds
to ten points.

Keeper Gloves

1. The team will be requested to stand at a fixed

distance of ten meters away from the goal. A
line/barrier will be drawn in order to determine the
permitted kicking area.
2. The participants will be given two minutes to score
as many goals possible.
3. The participants may only use their feet in order to
kick the balls into the goal.
4. The members of the team may take turns kicking
or they may choose a representative to complete
the activity.
5. One of the station facilitators will act as a
goalkeeper in order to increase the difficulty of the
challenge.
6. Each ball shot into goal corresponds to five points.

The footballs will stay at rest unless a force (kicking) acts

upon it. Force is applied to it to be able to reach the goal.

1. The team must choose one representative to

complete the task within two minutes.
2. The cups and index cards will be layered
alternately in such a way that a tower of the
materials will be built.
3. Within the given time frame, the participant must
remove each index card to stack all the cups
properly.
4. Once the tower falls or one of the cups falls, the
participant must start from the top of the tower
again.
5. Each cup stacked corresponds to ten points.

The cups will be stacked to the bottom through the force

of gravity with a downward direction. They will stay at rest
unless a force, such as the removal of the index cards,
acts upon them.

basket. A line/barrier will be drawn in order to
determine the starting point.
3. The participants, with the use of the clipboard,
must rally tennis balls back and forth to be able to
shoot them inside the basket.
4. Once a tennis ball hits the ground, the pair must
start again from their starting point.
5. Each tennis ball shot inside the basket
corresponds to ten points.

In order to sustain the movement of the tennis ball, a

certain amount of force must be applied to it. The
direction of the force plays a vital role in the direction of
the tennis ball.

follows:
0.00 - 0.30 Forty Points
0.31 - 1.00 Thirty Points
1.00 - 1.30 Twenty Points
1.31 - 2.00 Ten Points

Conceptual Explanation

1. The team must select a representative to

complete the task within two minutes.
2. The materials shall be layered as follows: (bottom
to top) glass cup with water, aluminum plate, toilet
paper spool, and egg.
3. The goal is to hit the aluminum plate and toilet
paper spool to be able to successfully shoot the
egg in the glass cup with water. The spring action
must be perfect to allow the egg to drop freely.
This must be done using the broom.
4. There shall be four setups. Each egg shot inside
the cup corresponds to ten points.

The force applied to both the aluminum plate and the

toilet paper spool must be regulated in order to avoid the
change in direction of the egg. The eggs direction must
be downward. The hitting of the materials must be done
in a short amount of time to accelerate.

Flat Surface or Table

1. The team must choose two representatives to

complete the task within two minutes.
2. The glass cups are aligned in a row with spoons
before them. Each glass cup has a total of two
spoons in front of it and the spoons are arranged
downward (handle above), one before the other,
and overlapping. (See blueprint:
https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=_IRfvcMh0BU)
3. The goal of the game is to shoot a spoon inside
the glass cup with the use of another spoon.
Force must be applied on a spoon which overlaps
another spoon.
4. The participants may formulate their own strategy
or assign the number of spoons to shoot.
5. Each spoon shot inside the glass cup corresponds
to ten points.

As one of the spoons is pushed downward, the

overlapping spoons movement is upward towards the
direction of the glass cup. With the application of an
amount of force, the other spoon will be in motion.

Fifteen Plastic Cups

Balloon (Nine Balloons for Nine Groups)
Flat Surface or Table

1. The team must select a representative to

complete the task within two minutes.
2. The plastic cups must be aligned in one row for
easier completion of the task.
3. The participant must blow air into the balloon and
he/she must use this air to knock down the cups.
4. The balloon must be blown repeatedly to be able
to knock down all the cups.
5. Each cup knocked down corresponds to ten
points.

The force applied to the cups must be regulated in order

to knock down as many cups possible. The air that is
coming out of the balloon must be in the direction of the

line/barrier will be drawn in order to determine the
permitted area.
3. The clothespin is clamped on a playing card and
the clothespin enables the playing card to stand
on the flat surface. The participant must hit the
cards with the use of rubber bands.
4. Each card knocked down corresponds to ten
points.

As the rubber band is stretched backward, the force is

released forward or the opposite direction.

J. Station 10
Station 10 is the general station where everyone shall gather in the end. In this
station, they will be given the chance to unscramble the first letters of their
answers from the station riddles to be able to find the answer to the brain buster

seven feet away from the bucket. A line/barrier will
be drawn in order to determine the permitted area.
3. The participant must bounce the ping pong ball on
the wall in order to shoot it in the bucket or basket.
The participant cannot directly shoot the ping
pong ball inside the basket or bucket as it
