and as instructed by Team Leaders Representative using suitable Fill Material.
7.1.2 With the permission of Team Leaders Representative, the trench shall be
backfilled using fine-grained material to 150 mm cover on the top of the pipe.
This material shall be carefully placed to protect external coating of the pipe and
properly filled with hand tools under haunches and on sides of pipe, in 150 mm
layers.
7.1.3 Suitable fill material shall be obtained by selection from excavated material, or
imported from an off-site. Company approved source, that which is acceptable
for fill in accordance with the requirements for compaction.
7.1.4 Suitable fill material shall be free from clay, coral, oil contaminated, organic or
combustible material, excessive fines, rock and debris or materials not capable of
complying with the compaction requirements of the Specification.

7.1.5 After hard compacting the fine grained material, backfill the rest of the trench
with approved material in layers not exceeding 150 mm. Compact thoroughly to
density consistent with surrounding clean soil.
7.1.6 While backfilling, Contractor shall ensure that any compacting effort applied
over and close to the line shall not endanger it any way.
7.1.7 Sand Bedding/Padding Materials shall be approved by the Client prior to
placement and the materials test report shall be submitted to client for approval.
7.1.8 In order to provide adequate protection to the coating of pipeline sand
bedding/padding shall be placed after inspection and approval of the trench
7.1.9 If ground water is present in the trench, it shall be removed by suitable
dewatering, means before sand bedding/padding.
7.1.10 Ensure before lowering the pipe section into the trench that inspection have been
conducted and approved by client.
7.1.11 In order to prevent pipe coating damage to long sections of pipe placed in the
trench sand bags shall be installed first. Followed by sand surround the pipeline
within 24 hours.
7.1.12 After the pipeline is lowered in. the survey recording of as built measurement
including location of pipe, shall be carried out.
7.1.13 After the pipe has been lowered into the sand bed and team leaders
representative approval received for backfilling, further and sand padding shall
be place around and above the pipe with a minimum thickness of 200mm as
specified in design calculation. The depth of padding shall be as such to give the
pipe in place the specified from the hard materials.

7.1.14 Suitable fill material shall have the following approximate properties.
1. Classification according to AASHTO Designation MI 45-82 fails within soil
Group A-2-4.
2. Silt content 10 15%
3. Soaked CBR value (at 95% Modified proctor) shall not be less than 12.

7.2 PIPE BEDDING AND BACKFILLING AROUND PIPE
7.2.1

Pipe bedding and backfilling material around pipe shall be deposited in layers
not exceeding 150mm maximum in loose lift and compacted to the required
density. Pipe bedding material shall extend up to 300mm minimum over the top
of the pipeline. This operation of Backfilling the trench shall consist of selected
suitable material compacted to 95% maximum density at optimum moisture
content, granular material shall be graded material with a maximum particle
size of 20mm, special care shall be taken not to damage the coating and or
wrapping of the pipe during backfilling operation, suitable bedding material
may be graded desert fill graded excavated material or done sand with 5% or
less passing the number 200 sieve free from organic material.

7.3 BACKFILLING FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRENCH

7.3.1 Except for special material for pavements, the remainder of the trench shall be
backfilled with native material suitable for backfill that is free from stones larger
than 50 mm in any direction. Backfill material shall be deposited in layers not
exceeding 200 mm loose lift and shall be compacted to the required density.
Compaction required is expressed as percentage of maximum density obtained
by the test procedure presented in ASTM D1 557.
7.3.2 The Compaction Testing shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM 1527 or
ASSHO T-16 Standards by using modified proctor testing method.
7.3.3 For Gatch materials backfilling shall be compacted mechanically where the
pipeline crosses roads, driveways, walkways or elsewhere specified in the
approved drawings.
7.3.4 Berm materials shall be selected from desert fill or excavated materials.
7.3.5 Wherever existing cables are encountered, all cable marker tiles shall replace or
protected and the cable shall be securely supported.
7.3.6 The materials used for backfilling should be gatch, earth or any other suitable
material. The backfilling material shall be approved by the owner prior to
placement.
7.3.7 The backfill material shall be wetted with clean water and applied over the
pipeline compaction.
7.3.8 No backfilling shall be carried out until the approval for pipeline within the
excavation has been received from client and approval to commence backfill is
given by client.
7.3.9 Mechanical shall be used wherever possible minimum of 95% of dry density at
optimum moisture content, necessary compacting test of backfill shall be carried
out.
7.3.10 Spoils from the site clearance and surplus excavated materials shall be loaded
and deposited to an area specified by client / owner as a dumping area.

level shall be coated with 3 coats of modified bitumen on client approved quality
to achieve a total thickness of 1000 microns.
7.4.6 Backfill materials on structural foundations shall be gatch, using approved gatch
materials shall be done in layers not exceeding 200 mm thick and compact
mechanically, compaction test will be conducted after every layer of backfill up
to the final grade elevation as per site condition, Sample of materials to be used
shall be subject for laboratory testing of which the result shall be submitted to
the company.
7.4.7 All exposed concrete surface above ground level shall be coated with 3 coat of
