MECHANICS OF MATERIALS AND MACHINES 1- MECH 1001Y(1)

SECTION A
Answer THREE Questions from this Section

Question 1
The figure Q1 shows a pin-jointed frame hinged at the supports.
Determine:
[6 marks]

(1)

the reactions at the supports.

(2)

the magnitude and nature of forces in each member .

[10 marks]

Question 2
Fig Q2 shows a composite bar made up of aluminium and steel, held between two
supports. The bars are stress-free at a temperature of 400 C.
Determine the stresses in the two bars when the temp is 200 C if
(1)

the supports are non-yielding.

[8 marks]

(2)

the supports come nearer to each other by 0.1 mm.

[8 marks]

It may be assumed that the change of temperature is uniform all along the length of
the bar.
Esteel = 210 GN/m2 ; Ealu = 74 GN/m2

steel = 11.7 x 10-6 per 0C ; alu= 23.4 x 10-6 per 0C

Question 3
A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is required to transmit 600 kW at 110 r.p.m., the
maximum torque being 20% greater than the mean torque. The shear stress is not to
exceed 63 MN/m2 and the angle of twist in a length of 3 m is not to exceed 1.4
degrees.
Determine the maximum external diameter satisfying these conditions.
G= 84 GN/m2

[16 marks]

Question 4
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown loaded in
Fig Q4.
[8 marks]
Clearly mark the position of the maximum bending moment and determine its
value.

SECTION B
Answer THREE questions from this section.
Question 5
Fig Q5 shows a pin-jointed mechanism. The angular velocity of the crank OA is 600
r.p.m.
Determine:
[8 marks]

(1)

the linear velocity of the slider D

(2)

the angular velocity of the link BD, when the crank is inclined at 75 to the
vertical.
[8 marks]
The dimensions of the various links are : OA= 28 mm; AB= 44 mm; BC= 49
mm; and BD= 46 mm.

The distance between the centres of rotation O and C is 65 mm. The path of travel of
the slider is 11 mm below the fixed point C. The slider moves along a horizontal path
and OC is vertical.

Question 6
Four masses A, B, C, and D are to be completely balanced. The masses of B, C, and
D are 30 kg, 50 kg and 40 kg respectively. The radii of A, B, C and D are 180 mm, 240
mm,120 mm and 150 mm respectively. The planes containing masses B and C are
300 mm apart. The angular position of B from C is 900. B and C make angles of 2100
and 1200 respectively with D in the same sense. Determine
(1)

the magnitude and the angular position of mass A

[8 marks]

(2)

the position of planes A and D

Question 7
A shaft fitted with a flywheel rotates at 250 r.p.m and drives a machine whose
torque varies in a cyclic manner over a period of 3 revolutions. The torque rises
from 750 Nm to 3000 Nm uniformly during half revolution and remains constant for
the following revolution. It then falls uniformly to 750 Nm during the next
revolution and remains constant for one revolution, the cycle being repeated
thereafter.
Determine
[8 marks]

(1)

the power required to drive the machine

(2)

the percentage fluctuation in speed, if the driving torque applied to the shaft
is constant and the mass of flywheel is 500 kg with radius of gyration of 600
[8 marks]
mm .

Question 8
A leather belt is required to transmit 7.5 kW from a pulley 1.2 m in diameter,
running at 250 r.p.m. The angle of contact is 1650 and the coefficient of friction
between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. If the safe working stress for the leather belt is
1.5 MPa, density of leather 1 Mg/m3 and thickness of the belt 10 mm, determine the
width of the belt taking centrifugal tension into account.
