HISTORY OF ZASTAVA 101

Yugoslavian model Zastava 101 (international name was Zastava 1100) is a derivate of Italian
Fiat 128, with more practical rear bonnet.
Zastava 101 was introduced on 15th march 1971 during automobile fair in Belgrade, serial
production has started a year later. At the beginning she was announced to be new nacional
wehicle in Yugoslavia.
At the beginning European market was intrigued- Zastava 101 was more beautiful car than
Fiat 128. Zastava 101 becom e bestseller in Yugoslavia.
Famous for her practice usage like a family car, PORSCHE transmission system gave her
Sport spirit. Zastava 101 won rally championship in Yugoslavia.
In 1973. Yugoslavian Drivers drove 17 000km- Rally Tour dEurope and won.
In 1974. Tour dEurope was also won-for few kilometers Yugoslavian driver J.Palikovic was
driving faster than Porsche!!
During period between 1971. and 1979. Zstava 101(Zastava 1100) was exported to many
countries over the globe. In Poland until 1976 FSO factory was producing this interesting car.
In february 1975. Zastava organized expedition from Kragujevac to Kilimanjaro.Five brand
new standard Zastava 101 and 11 crew members had traveled over African deserts and
savannas and had finished their expedition after 45 days on the top of Kilimanjaro.
Zastava 101 fever culminated during 1979. when 88.918 models were produced in
Kragujevac.
In 1981. Zastava 101 was proclaimed to be car of decade(and that was true).
In 1991. Zastava 101 with serial number 1 000 000 (million) was produced.
Two versions were available in the beginning: Standard and DE LUXE.
Standard version had seats made of black Leather imitation , with black, spherical gear knob.
De Luxe had red seats, red carpet, chrome trims on door interior covers, wood imitation in
front of right front seat. De Luxe had also transparent gear knob with Zastavas logo in it, and
chrome exterior side trims.
Afterwards Standard Zastava 101 was changed a little beat, radiator mask was painted
black(early models had gray radiator mask), and it was produced (without changes) until
1979. During 1979 Standard model had name Zastava 101 B, standard seats were substituted
with seats taken from Zastava 101L.
In 1976 De Luxe model was substituted with new model Zastava 101 L- with few changes
(new bumpers-with rubber trim, interior was reduced-especially door covers, seat backs were
modified so they could be laid down) . Radiator mask was different-with chrome trims,
Zastava 101 L had rear light for driving backwards, electrical water pump for washing
windscreen, thermometer for engine temperature, cigarette lighter, servo-brakes.
All early models had engine with swept volume of 1116ccm, with various
carburetors( Weber 32 icev 10, Holley Europa 32 ICEV 10, IPM 32 MGV 1 ili Solex C 32
DISA 20, with compression ratio 8, 8:1.
In 1976 there was major change-all engines starting with number 0076986 had substituted
camshaft-old was 14mm cam wide, new 20 mm cam wide.
During 1979. Zastava produced new models Zastava 101 S (Super) ili SC (Super Confort)which were basically the same.
They had new bumpers without buffers, square head lights, new radiator mask with two
silver trims, black side mirror, black wipers, small black wheel caps, rear windscreen heater,
new control lamps (hand brake, bad brakes). Future owners could chose colors of interior.

They were produced with 1116 ccm i 1290 ccm engines, carburetors IPM 32 MGV
25/250(1290ccm) ,IPM 32 MGV 10(1116ccm) with compression ratio 9,2:1(1116 ccm)
9,1:1 (1290 ccm).
Model SC had two barrel WEBER 30/32 DMTR 90/250 , 4-2-1 exhaust, 64 Hp(Horse
Power).
. Model MEDITERAN was 2-door car, had round head lights like early models. Two kind of
engine: Standard 1116 ccm with 55 Hp and 1290 ccm with 73 Hp (same engine concept like
in the model Special).
Also in 1979 Zastava 101 Special was introduced- she had advanced instruments with oil
pressure controla and rpm-meter. And powerful engine,1290 ccm,
WEBER 32/32 DMTR 90/250 ,4-2-1 exhaust ,73 Hp.
All models had new type of steering wheel introduced with model Confort-with inscription
ZASTAVA on horn taster. Models SC and Super had new Zastava logo on horn taster. Head
rests were integrated with seats.
During 1983. new models were introduced: Zastava 101 GT/GTL 55/65
These models had many changes: new wider chrome bumpers-front with integrated position
lights and blinkers. New radiator mask with ZASTAVA sign and sliver stripes was built in.
New side skirts, new wheel design, new wheel caps.
Interior was completely redesigned, new dashboard, new steering wheel, brown color
dominated.
Geer knob and hand brake were redesigned, chamber for small things was set in front of gear
shifter.
Suspension was redesigned, new was softer, vehicle was lower, so it was more stable on the
road than early models.
On GTL model, braking system was revised, and much better.
Engines on these models were with little changes: standard 1116 ccm (55Hp) with one barrel
carburetor IPM 32 MGV 12 and 1301 ccm (65Hp) with two barrel WEBER 30/32 DMTR
90/250. New thing was steel rope for accelerator control, early models had special system of
levers.
During 1987. new models were introduced with new name YUGO 1.3/1.3 GX
Differences were low, beside new insignias with Y instead Z. Interior was also the samemore colors were available. Engines were the same with 4-2-1 exhausts on all models.
During 1988 new models were introduced with more differences. New name was Yugo
SKALA 55/ 65.
Radiator mask had silver frame in the middle and silver stripes. Glasses on front doors were
integrated with old type butterfly glasses. New plastic bumpers-much bigger than on old
models. Interior was completely redesigned in gray or Sahara yellow color.
Engines were the same like on earlier models, only revision was BOSCH ignition system.
Model Skala 65 had 1301ccm engine with new two barrel WEBER 7Y2M-RA-with
electronic choke, 5-speed gear box and 17/64 transmission.
These models were produced until 1994 when they were modified (suspension and gear
box), new mark was Skala 55C/65C.
ZASTAVA Skala 55C and Skala 65C are still produced with minor revisions-bumpers are
plastic and thin(taken from model Zastava 128), wheel caps are taken from model Florida.

During 2007. dashboard was revised, modern dashboard with modern instruments can be
ordered- it is actually remake of famous ZASTAVA 101 SPECIAL Instruments(with
integrated RPM-meter).
Zastava 101 or Zastava Skala is still a Legend in Serbia. She is solid, not too expensive car,
usually driven by Zastava FANS.
Early models can be seen all over the Europe, still running as old-timers and collection cars.
In Serbia early models are still forcing their mileage- co-writer of this text, also driving 1979.
model with 170 000 km passed without major mechanical service, has a friend whose 73
Zastava 101 passed over 400 000km(without major mechanical repair), and has a neighbor
whose 75 Zastava 101 passed over 700 000km( engine never had big service repair, and still
in good shape)- so Vehicle of success wasnt coincidental nick name given by official
factory marketing.
