General Directions: Answer the following problems with complete solution. Follow the format of
the front page in your assignment; however, this should be handwritten for you to practice. As
much as possible, answer this on your own. To serve this also as your review for your exam, this
will be passed on October 8 in our class.

1. A coil with impedance 8 + j6 ohms is connected in series with a capacitive reactance


X. The series combination is connected in parallel with a resistor R. Given that the
equivalent impedance of the resulting circuit is 5 ohms, find the value of R and X.
2. A series circuit has R of 500 , a 10 H inductance L and a 4 F capacitance C across
a 60 Hz, 120 V power source. Compute the load current.
3. A series circuit has 50 ohm resistance, 2.22 microfarad capacitance and inductance of
8 mH. Find the total impedance at 796 Hz frequency.
4. A series RLC circuit is excited by a 100 V, 79.6 Hz source. Resistance R is 100 ohms,
inductance L is 1 H and capacitance C is 5 microfarad. Calculate the voltage across C.
5. An alternating current of maximum value of 20 A lags the reference voltage by 30.
What is the magnitude of current 2ms after the current wave crosses t axis going in the
positive direction?
6. A series circuit, with R = 10 and L = 20 mH, has current i(t) = 2.0 sin 500t (A).
Obtain total voltage v and the angle by which i lags v.
7. Find the two elements in a series circuit, given that the current and total voltage are
i(t) = 10 cos (5000t 23.13) A and v(t) = 50 cos (5000t + 30) V.
8. A series circuit, with R = 2.0 and C = 200 pF, has a sinusoidal applied voltage with a
frequency of 99.47MHz. If the maximum voltage across the capacitance is 24 V, what is
the maximum voltage across the series combination?
9. The current in a series circuit of R = 5 and L = 30 mH lags the applied voltage by
80. Determine the source frequency and the impedance Z.
10. The total current I entering the circuit shown in the figure is 33 cis 13.0 A. Obtain
the branch current I3 and the voltage V.

11. A current of 2030 A flows into three parallel branches that have impedances of
200, j10, -j10 . Find the current in the j10 branch.
12. In the parallel circuit shown in the figure, the effective values of the currents are: Ix
= 18.0 A, I1 = 15.0 A, IT = 30.0 A. Determine R and XL.

13. Obtain the phasor voltage VAB in the two-branch parallel circuit in the figure.

14. A series circuit of R = 10 and XC = 5 has an effective applied voltage of 120 V.


Determine the complex power.
15. Obtain the total effective current for the parallel circuit shown in the figure if for
branch 2, S2 = 1490 VA.

16. The power company must generate 100 kW to supply an industrial load with 94 kW
through a transmission line with resistance 0.09 . If the load power factor is 0.83
lagging, find the load voltage.
17. A plant draws 250 A rms from a 240-V rms line to supply a load with 50 kW. What is
the power factor of the load?
18. A series circuit has 100- resistance, 100-H inductance and 1-pF capacitance. What
is the frequency at unity power factor?
19. A 50 F is connected in series with a coil having 50 resistance and 150 mH
inductance. The source voltage is 100 sin(30). What is the complex power?

20. A high voltage power line operates at 500 000 Vrms and carries an rms current of
500 A. If the resistance of the cable is 0.050/km, what is the resistive power loss in 200
km of the power line?
21. Calculate the rms value of the waveform shown in the figure.

22. In a TV transmitter, a series circuit has an impedance of 3 k and a total current of


50 mA. If the voltage across the resistor is 80 V, what is the power factor of the circuit?
23. An industrial heater has a nameplate that reads: 210 V 60 Hz 12 kVA 0.78 pf lagging.
Determine: (a) the apparent and the complex power (b) the impedance of the heater
24. A 1-MVA substation operates at full load at 0.7 power factor. It is desired to improve
the power factor to 0.95 by installing capacitors. Assume that new substation and
distribution facilities cost $120 per kVA installed, and capacitors cost $30 per kVA
installed. (a) Calculate the cost of capacitors needed. (b) Find the savings in substation
capacity released. (c) Are capacitors economical for releasing the amount of substation
capacity?
25. The nameplate of an electric motor has the following information:
Line voltage: 220 V rms
Line current: 15 A rms
Line frequency: 60 Hz
Power: 2700 W
Determine the power factor (lagging) of the motor. Find the value of the capacitance C
that must be connected across the motor to raise the pf to unity.
26. In the circuit shown, find the value of ZL that will absorb the maximum power and
the value of the maximum power.

27. The load resistance RL in the figure is adjusted until it absorbs the maximum average
power. Calculate the value of RL and the maximum average power.

28. A series RLC network has R=2 k, L = 40 mH, and C=1F. Calculate the impedance
at resonance and at one-fourth, one-half, twice, and four times the resonant frequency.
29. It is expected that a parallel RLC resonant circuit has a midband admittance of 25 x
10^-3 S, quality factor of 80, and a resonant frequency of 200 krad/s. Calculate the
values of R, L, and C. Find the bandwidth and the half-power frequencies.
30. A parallel RLC circuit is resonant at 5.6 MHz, has a Q of 80, and has a resistive
branch of 40 k. Determine the values of L and C in the other two branches.
