Psychology, University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK is now accepting PhD applications (starting Fall 2016, application deadline January 23rd 2016). As part of the Centre for Social Interactions, our research group aims to understand social communication i.e., how humans transmit and decode complex information (e.g., facial expressions) to support social interactions with particular focus on cross-cultural communication. We use an interdisciplinary approach that combines traditionally distinct fields, such as psychophysics, social psychology, information theory and 4D computer graphics. Our research environment benefits from a worldwide unique state-of-the-art photorealistic 4D dynamic facial expression generator (developed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology, University of Glasgow using Dimensional Imaging technologies http://www.di4d.com/) to create complex stimuli with high precision. We have also recently acquired a FurHat robot head http://www.furhatrobotics.com/ as part of the Glasgow Social Robotics group (http://glasor.inp.gla.ac.uk/).

About the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology
http://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/neurosciencepsychology/ The INP comprises a team of multi-disciplinary international researchers who strive to understand the brain at multiple levels of function, from cells to cognition. Our approaches range from molecular, cellular and systems level investigations to the brain imaging of human behaviour and cognition. We specialize in investigating cell signalling, stem cells, brain imaging (fMRI, MEG, EEG, TMS) and formal modelling, with focus on the dynamics of information processing in cortical networks. In Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience @ University of Glasgow was ranked #1 in the UK for Research Intensity (joint with UCL). The INP hosts several ERC, BBSRC, MRC, ESRC grant holders and Wellcome Trust Senior Investigators. If you are interested in applying for a PhD, please get in touch with Rachael no later than 1st December 2015.
