EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Labor Boss Lifestyle report shows the stunning expenses spent by union leaders and exposes the
lavish lifestyle of those who claim to advocate for the average worker. Many in union leadership
positions are earning six figure salaries that are significantly higher than the salary of the average
worker they claim to represent.
Equally as troubling as bloated salaries are the thousands of dollars spent on luxury hotels in travel
hotspots, such as Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. And, one union paid a transportation company that
used gas-guzzling Hummers while their president advocated for a clean environment. Another union
owned a Learjet that cost over $1 million to maintain and operate. The hypocrisy seems to be endless.
Standard transportation for an average worker is not on a Learjet or a Hummer, and the standard
salary for an average worker is not six figures. The report shows the stark differences between the
excessive lifestyles of union bosses and that of the average worker.

In 2002, Weingarten Earned Five Times The Average Teachers Salary

In 2002, Weingarten Earned Five Times The Average Teachers Salary. United Federation
of Teachers President Randi Weingarten earned $240,000 last year, far more than the average
teacher's salary of $48,200. (NYC Teachers Union Head Earned Five Times The Average Teacher's Salary, The Associated Press,
6/5/02)

In 2002, Weingarten Was Given A $10,000 Car Allowance. Her total earnings last year
of $240,000 include her $192,862 salary, a $10,201 car allowance, $15,000 for serving on the
state teachers union board and $22,079 from the national board, the News said. (NYC Teachers Union
Head Earned Five Times The Average Teacher's Salary, The Associated Press, 6/5/02)

In 2002, Weingarten Earned More Than Some National Labor Leaders. Weingarten's
earnings last year surpassed those of some national labor leaders such as Moe Miller, head of the
American Postal Workers Union, who earned $142,038 and Dennis Rivera, president of the New York
City SEIU/Local 1199, who made $111,764. (NYC Teachers Union Head Earned Five Times The Average Teacher's Salary, The
Associated Press, 6/5/02)

In 2004, Weingarten Earned More Than A Quarter Million Dollars

In 2004, Weingarten Earned $262,848, Nearly $30,000 More Than In 2002. Heading
the pay pack is UFT President Randi Weingarten, who raked in a total of $262,848 in base pay and
other compensation, labor records show. That means Weingarten earned more than Schools
Chancellor Joel Klein, who gets a fixed salary of $250,000. Weingarten received a base salary of
$220,695 - nearly $30,000 more than in 2002. She also earned $21,660 in retroactive pay - about
half the starting salary of the $39,000 entry pay of a rookie teacher. Because of an accounting quirk,
she also received an additional week's pay of $4,293. Weingarten also drew a separate $16,000 salary
from the state union and uses a union car. (Carl Campanile, UFT Payroll A Dues-Y - Six-Figure Union Jobs On The Rise, New
York Post, 7/19/04)

Weingarten Defended Her Salary By Saying Union Members Would Decide Whether
Or Not Her Salary Was Appropriate. Weingarten defended her salary and those of her top
staffers. The members will decide whether it's appropriate or not, she said. She said the issue is
not how much she and her top union staffers make, but how little the city pays teachers. All my
members deserve a significant raise. We should be leveling up, not dragging down salaries,
Weingarten said. She noted that without the one-shot retroactive pay increase, her base salary is
less than the chancellor's, as will be the case next year. She said she's proud of union staffers who
work very hard for the membership. Weingarten said she offered union staffers the same deal
that was negotiated in the last union contract with the city in 2002 - a 16 percent retroactive pay
hike for teachers in exchange for working longer. (Carl Campanile, UFT Payroll A Dues-Y - Six-Figure Union Jobs On
The Rise, New York Post, 7/19/04)

In 2004, 40 Percent Of The 300 Employees Of UFT Earned More Than $100,000. The
United Federation of Teachers' $20 million payroll now includes 83 staffers whose compensation tops
$100,000 - up from 33 in 2002. But the UFT report filed with the U.S. Labor Department doesn't
even list all the staff members who make six figures. There are about 50 union staff members who get
paid between $30,000 to $60,000 by the union. But these employees - teachers on "leave time" from
classroom assignments to do union work- are also taking home their teaching salaries, city records
show. When the city and union salaries are combined, the total compensation of these employees
bulges to $130,000. In total, a staggering 40 percent of the 300 staffers working for the UFT make
more than $100,000. (Carl Campanile, UFT Payroll A Dues-Y - Six-Figure Union Jobs On The Rise, New York Post, 7/19/04)

The AFT And NEA Both Have Very Generous Housing And Travel Policies, But The AFT
Does Not Appear To Cap These Benefits
The AFT Allows First Class Or Charter Travel For All Officers And Vice Presidents.
According to the AFTs 2012 Form 990, all AFT officers and vice presidents may fly first class when
their flights are longer than two hours. There are three AFT officers and 38 vice presidents. These
individuals may convert their first class allowances into coach fares if these individuals want to bring
a companion. (American Federation Of Teachers, Form 990, 2012, Schedule J, Part III; American Federation Of Teachers Website, AFT

NEA Seems To Have A Far Less Generous Travel Policy Because It Caps Benefits.
According to the NEAs 2012 Form 990, NEA offers its companion travel benefit to the
organizations top three officers and its executive committee. There are six people on NEAs
executive committee. The NEA also allows personal allowances to its three officers and the
executive director, but caps the allowances at $5,500 per year for travel and $3,000 for personal
allowances. NEA board directors can be reimbursed for travel as well, but those benefits are
capped at $1,200 per year. There are 160 people on the NEAs board of directors. (National Education

According To Car And Driver, A Non-Limo H2 Hummer Averages 12 Miles Per

13 highway. We averaged 12 mpg over 1600 miles. (Larry Webster, Hummer H2 SUT, Car And Driver, 1/05)

Weingarten Has Advocated For A Cleaner Environment. We strongly support the EPA's
proposed Clean Power Plan to cut carbon pollution from existing power plants. Nearly 7 million
children suffer from asthma, and every day, 36,000 children miss school due to asthma. A cleaner
environment will provide a healthier life for todays children and families and for generations to
come, said Randi Weingarten, president, American Federation of Teachers. (Blue Green Alliance, Labor,

Some Members Of IATSE Draw Six Figure Salaries
In July 2014, It Was Reported Some Union Members Employed By The Metropolitan

that three of the houses five top-paid employees are members of Local 1 of the International Alliance

year. Even Gordons beloved choristers, the 80 or so full-time employees who perform many nights
behind the headline stars, take home an estimated $300,000 in annual pay and benefits. These are
hardly proletarian sums, and the numbers are hard to justify to a millennial generation still suffering
the job-market fallout of the financial crisis. (James Panero, Backstage Breakdown: The Mets Labor Impasse Penalizes Opera

IAM Officials Have Used The Learjet To Travel To Speaking Engagements At

Conferences. Unions even own their own Learjets, like the one owned by the International
Machinists and Aerospace Workers union. Flight records show union officials used this Learjet to fly
into Florida earlier this year, where its top boss gave a keynote address at a labor and management
conference at the union-owned Westin Diplomat. (Elizabeth MacDonald, Big Labor, Big Money, Fox Business, 7/5/12)
In 2013, Reform Candidates Challenged The Unions Leadership, Citing The Learjet As
An Example Of IAM Extravagance. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers, one of the nation's largest unions, could face the first challenge to its leadership in more
than five decades after the U.S. Labor Department found the union violated federal labor law during
an election earlier this yearMr. Cronk, 58 years old, said that if elected, he would cut union spending
and make it easier for rank-and-file members to seek office. He said he would sell the union's Learjet,
which he called an extravagance. Jet-related expenses, including pilot salaries, totaled more than $1
million in 2012, according to government filings. A union spokesman said Mr. Buffenbarger wasn't
available to comment. (Kris Maher and Jon Ostrower, Dissidents Challenge Longtime Machinists Union Leadership, The Wall Street
Journal, 12/6/13)

In 2012, IAM Officials Flew On The Learjet 54 Times And Were On The Plane An
Average Of 14 Days A Month. Union officials have been pretty active using their unions Learjet60, purchased for an unknown sum in 1998 (Learjets today cost $13 million new, or around $5
million for used planes). Government flight records show from February through June 9, union
officials flew on the plane 54 times, so on average they were on the plane for about 14 days out of
every month. Union officials used the Learjet to wing around the country to Orlando, Fla., Chicago,
Niagara Falls, and to Toronto, Canada, flight records show. And flight records for the plane also show
it was used to wing into Hollywood, Fla., last February, where the Machinists unions international
president, R. Thomas Buffenbarger, gave the keynote address, The State of Our Unions, at a union
conference at the union-owned Westin Diplomat. The union declined repeated requests for
comment. (Elizabeth MacDonald, Big Labor, Big Money, Fox Business, 7/5/12)
In 2011, IAM Spent More Than $1.25 Million To Operate The Learjet. In 2011 alone, the
union spent more than $1.25 million to operate the plane, government documents show, on items
including:
Maintenance: $651,364
Pilot Salaries: $368,992 (for three pilots)
Hangar Rental: $73,430
Fuel: $39,489
Insurance: $25,917
Hangar Maintenance: $7,736
Other: $83,250. (Elizabeth MacDonald, Big Labor, Big Money, Fox Business, 7/5/12)

BAC Owned Its Own Private Jet
Until At Least 2011, BAC Owned A Private Jet. Until recent years, a handful of unions had
private jets to ferry officials to meetings in style. The International Union of Bricklayers, until at least
2011, owned a plane, but shortly after James Boland became president in February 2010, the
international executive board grounded the plane and put it on the market, where it remained for a
number of months owing to an excess of similar planes for sale. It was sold in February 2012, Connie
19

Lambert, the Bricklayers communications director, said in an email. (Luke Rosiak, Union Bosses Salaries Put Big

UNITED FARM WORKERS (UFW)

UFW Has Done Little To Help Working People

UFW Has Been Criticized For Doing Little To Improve The Lives of California
Farmworkers
In 2006, The Los Angeles Times Reported That UFW Did Little To Improve The Lives
Of California Farmworkers. Today, a Times investigation has found, Chavezs heirs run a web
of tax-exempt organizations that exploit his legacy and invoke the harsh lives of farmworkers to raise
millions of dollars in public and private money. The money does little to improve the lives of
California farmworkers, who still struggle with the most basic health and housing needs and try to get
by on seasonal, minimum-wage jobs. (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its Roots, Los Angeles
Times, 1/8/06)

Most Of The Funds Go To Burnish The Chavez Image And Expand The Family
Business, A Multimillion-Dollar Enterprise With An Annual Payroll Of $12 Million
That Includes A Dozen Chavez Relatives. (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its
Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)

And Chavezs Heirs Broke With Labor Solidarity And Hired Nonunion Workers To
Build The $3.2-Million National Chavez Center Around Their Founder's Grave In The
Tehachapi Mountains, A Site They Now Market As A Tourist Attraction And Rent Out
For Weddings. (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)

UFW Has Also Used Nonunion Labor To Build Low-Income Homes And Very Few
Are For Farmworkers. Over the last 15 years, the National Farm Workers Service Center has
raised $230 million to buy or build more than 3,500 housing units for lower-income families in
26

California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Very few are for farmworkers. Almost all have been
built with nonunion labor. It's a tricky one, said Paul Chavez, who has run the charity since being
tapped as president by his father in 1990. We do the best we can. You should honor labor; you
should help poor people." (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)
UFW Has Raised More From Fundraising Appeals Than From Membership Dues. The
UFW spent $940,000 last year on direct-mail fundraising appeals, its largest expense after salaries,
according to tax returns. Donations account for almost one-third of the UFW's budget more than
$2 million a year and consistently total more than member dues, which hover around $2 million.
(Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)

UFW Political Director: We're Unusual In That We Actually Get Paid To Run
Campaigns. In 1998, political consultant Richard Ross showed UFW leaders a statewide poll of
Latino voters. The UFW ranked at the top as a name to trust. Richie just said, 'This is gold,' UFW
Political Director Giev Kashkooli recalled. From then on, the union has been selling its brand. In
1999, the union began running political campaigns as a business. Since 2000, the union and several
related nonprofits have received close to $1 million from state campaign committees alone, a
combination of civic donations and payments for election help. Most unions contribute money to
candidates; the UFW collects it instead. Most unions give money to their political action committees;
the United Farm Workers PAC pays the union. We're unusual in that we actually get paid to run
campaigns, Kashkooli said. (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)

The Campaigns That The UFW Works On Are Often Not Even In Areas Where They
Have Members. The UFW frequently works on campaigns in areas where it does not have
members but ranks high in polls, such as Long Beach, and where candidates believe the affiliation
will help their cause. They are often campaigns advised by Ross, a lobbyist who also works for the
UFW. In Calexico last spring, for example, the Viejas Indians paid the UFW $75,000 to run a
campaign to win approval for a casino in the Imperial Valley city. Rodriguez sent letters urging
support and enclosing a UFW pin with an eagle. (Miriam Pawel, Farmworkers Reap Little As Union Strays From Its
Roots, Los Angeles Times, 1/8/06)
