SOLAR SYSTEM

The Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets and

their moons, comets and asteroids.

They are all called celestial bodies. Everything in the

Solar System orbits of the Sun.

SUN

* The Sun is the largest celestial body. It is much bigger than

any planet.
* The Sun is a star which provides the light and heat necessary
for life on Earth.
* The Sun is really huge. It has a big mass –so its gravity is
really strong-.

PLANETS AND SATELLITES

There are 8 planets, also called “large celestial

bodies”.

Each planet also orbits the Sun.

The planets can be classified into two groups:

1. TERRESTRIAL PLANETS: small and mainly
made up of rock.
• Mercury, Venus, the Earth and
Mars.

2. Gas giants: large and made up of gases.

• Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune.

Important things to know about planets:

1) A planet is something which orbits around a star.
2) The planets all move in elliptical orbits.
3) Planets don’t give out light but the Sun and other stars do. ELLIPTICAL ORBIT

ASTEROIDS

 Asteroids are tiny and rocky celestial bodies.

 They have different shapes.

dust and rock.
 They have bright tails which point away
from the Sun.
