Directions: Please read assigned chapter and create an outline highlighting important points from
chapter. In your outline, you MUST include:
1. A thesis statement for each Chapter (summarizing the main idea of the chapter). This part
should be 3-4 sentences per chapter.
2. A brief summary (2-4 sentences) of each main section (see Table of Contents main
sections are bold purple titles).
3. Page numbers to find important definitions and summaries (Ex. Chapter summaries).
4. Two short answer questions you create and answer (per chapter) to demonstrate your
ability to critically apply the learned material.
Outlines must be typed in12 point font (with 1-inch margins all around). Please proofread
carefully for grammar and spelling.
NOTES:
1. Chapter 1 is used as an example so I will not accept any outlines for Chapter 1.
2. While you are only required to turn in outlines for Chapters 2-7, it may be beneficial to
outline all chapters to use as study guides for exams.

Chapter One Discovering Sociology

Thesis:
This chapter I identifies the sociological imagination. It identifies how we should understand it
and apply it to our everyday lives. The sociological imagination originates from the questions
how and why. It also explained how sociology developed.

Section Summaries:
1. What is Sociology?
This section defines sociology and outlines the familiar with the unfamiliar in how we
view the world. It also identifies that our social world guides our actions and life
choices in much the same way that the seasons influence our choice of clothing.
2. Sociology and Critical Thinking
The main idea from the section is the study of the larger world and our societys place
in it. Sociology shows us that our place in society profoundly affects our life
experiences. This section also describes how things are not always as they seem. It
focuses on medias role in shaping society. Finally, it emphasizes the critical thinking
aspect of sociology.
3. Technomedia in Focus
This section describes some newer forms of media in society and the reasons
sociologists are interested in studying them. It discusses how they interact with more
traditional media (like TV) and how they have changed our daily lives.
4. The Development of Sociology
This section tells us how sociology came to be and where it originated and why. It
also gives us the results of the powerful social forces behind sociology. The
contributions of early sociologists like Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Max Weber and
W.E.B. DuBois are discussed.
5. Contemporary Sociology
The main idea of this section is to introduce the different approaches to understanding
the theory between change of people and how they view each other in society. To be
more precise it explains social behavior in the real world. This section outlines the
major theoretical perspectives.

6. Looking to the Future: Sociology Today and Tomorrow


Critical sociology is the study of society that focuses on the need for social change and
this section highlights how future sociologists must use the sociological imagination to
fulfill this promise.
