Dear Sir or Madam,

International Affair, Naresuan University

My name is Ananda Nuryadi Pratama, I finished my Bachelor degree in 2014 as the best
graduate (from 80 students) from faculty of Agriculture Mulawarman University, Indonesia. My bachelor
thesis is about anther tissue culture of the local upland rice from East Kalimantan. During my study, I
had followed international student course about DNA barcoding and also always discuss about the
advance biotechnology concept with my supervisor, such as plant transformation using Agrobacterium,
analysis and expression gene, and DNA barcoding. I am eager to involve deeply about advance
Biotechnology, and challenge myself to continue my study relating on this field.
My perspective about advance biotechnology is a future technology for natural resource
development. With advance biotechnology, the problems of hunger and nutrient deficiency in the world
could be solved. For example, the researchers have been developing potential rice strain containing a lot
of vitamin A to prevent blindness of millions children in South East Asia. I strongly believe that the
countries developing advance biotechnology will be a prosperous country, and it will be an honor if I
could be involved in the development of advance biotechnology.
After graduated, I work as a researcher assistant and do some experiments such as develop
double haploid strain of the local upland rice and conventional plant breeding. I also join a bridging
program for study abroad from Mulawarman University at the same time. In the bridging program, I
improve my English such as TOEFL score, speaking, and academic writing to fill up the scholarship
requirements. Moreover, I also visited several Universities in Thailand as one of the programs. I really
interested to continue my study in Naresuan University. Naresuan University has a great academic
environment, good research group, interesting research issue, advanced biotechnology laboratory, and
perfect library facilities. Furthermore, when I visited Naresuan University I feel like home. Lecturers in
Naresuan University are very kind and humble. I really believe that study in Naresuan University give me
valuable and enjoyable experience.
Actually, I met Dr. Kumrop Ratanasud as my prospective supervisor on February 2015 in
Naresuan University, and we discussed about my tentative research. Our research plan is about the
improvement of orchid flower colour by modifying anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. The basic idea is
changing the purple flower to white and other possible colour. In this research I can do gene cloning,
gene expression analysis, plant transformation, and tissue culture. This research is exactly what I had
expected. I would be glad to do this research since it is very challenging for me.

My plan after finishing my study, I would like to be a lecturer. Because lecturers could always
improve their knowledge with research and share their knowledge to people. They also could be an
entrepreneur in business of agriculture. Those, if I am a lecturer, I can prove how the agricultural
business can prosper our life.
At my leisure, I fill it up with sport activities. I really like traditional martial art and I have
practiced since 10 years ago. So, it would be a great chance for me if I can study in Naresuan University
to learn about Muay Thai. Moreover, I win the traditional martial art event at province level in 2014.
Additionally, according to the last discussion with the Dean and Head of Graduate School Faculty
of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, after they checked my CV, they said that I could
directly apply for Ph.D program (fast track 4 years) because I have already passed the requirements.
Based on the explanation above, I want to register as Ph.D student in Agricultural Biotechnology, Faculty
of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.
With all of my motivation and academic experience above, I am confident that I am a strong
candidate as a Ph.D student in Naresuan University, especially in plant biotechnology.

Best Regards,
Ananda Nuryadi Pratama
