Instruction: Make a short write-up about Statistics in Education.

Statistic is used widely in our day-to-day operations. Statistics is the science

of making effective use of numerical data relating to groups of individuals or
experiments. Educational statistics on the other hand is defined as the study of the
collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data specifically
meant for the education sector.

In my opinion, statistics is really necessary when we want to talk about

numbers instead of basic information. It is used because statistics provide us with
exact and more correct information. Statistical information of the school must be
understand and memorize among the teachers especially the headmaster. Statistical
information of the school basically about the total number of students, both male and
female, number of teachers, statistical information about the exam accomplishment
or even the total number of students drop out. School administer such as the
headmaster need to understand those kind of informations to run the school
smoothly. They can predict what solutions or future recommendation to improve the
quality of their school, thus improving the quality of the students. Other than that,
every teacher of a class need to record the number of students who absent everyday
in the attendance book. Students who cannot make it to the school must provide a
medical slip or written formal letter from the parents. At the end of each months, the
teacher need to close the book properly by calculating the number of students who
attend and absent during school sessions. They also need to provide the mean,
mode and median of the attendance, which is in statistical form. In doing this,
teachers can curb truancy or take further action if they notice any obvious absentism.

Furthermore, statistics is also used in reflecting your daily lesson plan,

especially for primary and secondary schools teachers. They have to reflect back

about the lessons in statistical form. It is done so that the evaluators will have clearer
view on how many students achieved the teachers learning objectives. It is also
used so that the teacher can take further action to help the students who do not
perform well in class. For example, 20/25 students able to write in neat legible print
with correct spelling. However, 5/25 student could not write in a proper manner.

Moreover, statistics also come in handy when the teachers want to evaluate
or even distribute the students based on their achievement in test or big examination.
Teachers able to identify which students can perform in certain areas or subjects and
take further actions or even focus more on certain topics that students dont
understand clearly. Teachers will also be able to know the individual differences of
the students, comparing suitability of one method or technique with another, making
predictions for the future.

In addition, there are certain situations that make statistic fun or eager to read
among teachers. For example, the statistics of increment of salary and statistics of
sharp increase in achievement of the subjects that they teach. It will show how much
their efforts are paid off and all the troubles they face, from extra class till midnight,
insufficient sleeps preparing extra enrichment exercises for their lovely students
seems to fade away.

In short, statistics is beneficial and helps us in classification, organisation,

evaluation, measurement and standardization. Statistics is really important in our
daily lives, not just in education. So, I really looking forward to learn in depth about
statistics to help me become a better, wiser teacher one day.
