Fort Worth Aircraft Evaluation Group

AgustaWestland S.p.A. AW119MKII with
Garmin G1000H Integrated Avionics System Installation of the
Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) Installation
1. Purpose and applicability.
The purpose of this report is to insure complete coverage and documentation of all
Flight Standards responsibilities regarding the type design change certification of the
AgustaWestland S.p.A AW119MKII with the Garmin G1000H Electronic Flight
Instrument System (EFIS) Installation with a Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible
cockpit. The AgustaWestland S.p.A AW119MKII aircraft is type certificated as a Part
27 Normal Category Rotorcraft, Day/Night VFR operation. The Garmin G1000H is
limited to Day/Night VFR operations in its present configuration. This system is an
avionics suite that combines primary flight instrumentation, navigational information,
and a moving map display on dual 7.7 by 11.8 inch color screens. This flight evaluation
consisted of the maneuvers required for the original issuance of a Commercial Pilot and
Instrument Pilot rating, Rotorcraft-Helicopter. The addition of the Garmin G1000H
Avionics Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD) does not
affect the maneuvering of the aircraft through any of the required Practical Test Standard
(PTS) maneuvers. There is no coupling of the aircraft flight controls to navigation
sources. Additionally, there are no Flight Director cues provided to the pilot.
2. Pilot Type Rating Requirements.
The AgustaWestland S.p.A AW119MKII Rotorcraft is certificated at a gross weight
below 12,500 lbs. and exhibited no unusual characteristics or complexity that requires
exceptional skill or knowledge to operate. Therefore an aircraft type rating is not
required.

9. FSB Specifications for Training Devices and Simulators. 14 CFR Part 60 - Flight
Simulation Training Device Initial and Continuing Qualification and Use, outlines
specifications for helicopter simulator and Flight Training Devices. During the time of
the FSB neither a full motion simulator, nor Flight Training Device existed. The
aircraft manufacturer indicated that if an FTD/Simulator was certificated by the National
Simulator Program, it could be implemented with the training program in the future.

PART II (Board Report)

1.0 Background:
On March 1, 2013, Donald H. Wood Jr. (Chip) Operations Inspector, Fort Worth Aircraft
Evaluation Group, conducted an operational evaluation in an AgustaWestland S.p.A
AW119MKII. (N516LF) was flown both day and night for an evaluation of the aircraft
handling qualities as equipped with the Garmin G1000H EFIS and NVG Systems. The
AW119MKII is included in the H7EU type certificate data sheet.
The flight display system of the evaluated aircraft was comprised of:
1. #1 GIA Garmin Integrated Avionics Unit GPS/NAV/COM, AWG, and
Discrete I/O
2. #2 GIA Garmin Integrated Avionics Unit GPS/NAV/COM, AWG, and
Discrete I/O
3. #1 GEA Garmin Engine & Airframe I/O
4. #2 GEA Garmin Engine & Airframe I/O
5. #1 Garmin Signal Conditioner Unit (N1, N2, and NR converter)
6. #2 Garmin Signal Conditioner Unit (N1, N2, and NR converter)
7. GMU 44 Magnetometer
8. GRS 77H Attitude Heading and Reference System (AHRS)
9. GDC 74H Air Data Computer
10. GPT 59 Outside Air Temperature (OAT) Probe
11. GTX 330 w/ES (Extended Squitter) Mode S Transponder
12. Cobham Digital Audio Control System
13. L3-COM Electronic Standby Instrument System(ESIS)
14. GTS 800 Traffic Awareness System
15. GDL 69 AH XM Weather System
16. Garmin HTAWS
17. Garmin Synthetic Vision System
18. RA-4500 Radar Altimeter
The flight evaluation consisted of the maneuvers required for the issuance of a
Rotorcraft-Helicopter Instrument rating. The system provides a PFD depicting attitude,
altitude, barometric altimeter setting, airspeed, instantaneous vertical speed, magnetic
heading and course deviation indicator, and outside air temperature. The MFD can be
combined with a moving map, XM satellite weather, and traffic overlays. Additionally,
there are numerous optional avionics components available which integrate with the
basic G1000H Display System. The Garmin G1000H Avionics Display System does not
affect the maneuvering of the aircraft through any of the required Practical Test Standard
maneuvers. There is no coupling of the aircraft flight controls to navigation sources.
Additionally, there are no Flight Director cues provided to the pilot.
The following vendor avionics documents are available in the Manufacturers
Data section of the Rotorcraft Flight Manual:

2.0 There are no outstanding Aircraft Evaluation Group issue papers.
All issues were closed prior to the evaluation.
3.0 Type Ratings and Crew Qualification Tests.
With the addition of the Garmin G1000H Avionics Display System, pilots qualifying in
an aircraft that have this equipment installed should experience little difficulties in the
transition and require minimal training.
Summary and Conclusions: Flight checks are to be conducted in accordance with the
instruction, guidance, and requirements contained in Practical Test Standards and
supplemented by guidance in FAA Order 8900.1 and/or 8900.2.
