A prestigious MoU between PSGCT, Coimbatore and BHEL, Trichy

INTRODUCTION
The one year Post Graduate Programme on Welding and Quality Engineering is being
conducted by BHEL Educational Society (A Society established by Bharat Heavy
Electricals Limited, Tiruchirapalli for promoting Education) in collaboration with
PSGCT, Coimbatore for a period of 3 months in PSGCT and 9 months Internship
Training at BHEL, Trichy.
BHARAT HEAVY ELECTRICALS LTD TRICHY
Hailed as one of the Navaratnas by the Government of India, BHEL is the largest
Engineering and Manufacturing Enterprise of our country in power sector and ranks
among the top 12 manufacturers of power plant equipments in the world. BHEL-Trichy
was set up in 1963 for the manufacture of High Pressure Boilers and SSTP. Being a
company known for its Quality and Services, ISO 9001, 14001 and OHASAS 18001 has
been awarded to it.
WELDING RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Established in 1975 by Government of India under the management of Bharat Heavy
Electricals Ltd, Trichy, with the assistance of UNIDO and UNDP. WRI has been
constantly interacting with world renowned institutions for updating the knowledge base
on cutting edge technologies and assimilating experience. WRI has the recognition of
BIS, IBR and NABL.
PSG COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY- COIMBATORE
An institution with over 50 years of Excellence in Higher Education in Engineering, PSG
college of Technology was started in the year 1951. As an Institution of Academic

Mechanical Engineering graduates were selected through All India Entrance

Exam held in May 2009 at BHEL, Trichy.
Three months theory classes at PSG Tech followed by hands-on training for a
month at WRI.
Internship training at BHEL, Trichy for the rest of the curriculum .
Lectures given by industrial and research experts.

The institution has competent and committed faculty team who have carried out research
projects for various organisations like DRDO, ISRO, DST
TIFAC-CORE and
IGCAR.
They have collectively published around 136 Technical papers in the allied areas of
Diffusion bonding, Metal forming, Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), Materials
Characterisation, Iron and Steel making processes,Powder Metallurgy, Surface
Engineering, Non Destructive Testing, Metallography, Failure Analysis, Heat Treatment.

The institute is manned by experts comprising of 10 doctorates and 21 post graduates
trained in different countries in the field of welding and allied areas and is fully equipped
with the state of the art facilities. Specialised faculties drawn from Quality department,
testing laboratories and research field from both WRI and BHEL.

15 Exposure in the allied areas of Boiler Production, Quality assurance and Control,
Destructive and Non-Destructive Testing.
16 At the end of this programme, students will be armed with Certifications on CWI
and ASNT level II.
17 The previous batch students were placed in various MNCs all over India due to
the right blend of Industrial exposure and theoretical knowledge.
18 Active participations and exposure in professional activities through Indian
Welding Society (IWS), Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) and Indian Society of
Non-Destructive Testing.

More than 7600 personnel have been trained and 2000 consultancy services
have been completed covering 120 organisations. The types of industries served
include Heavy Engineering, Power, Petro-Chemical, Transport, Metal Processing,
Ship Building, Consumable & Welding equipment, Electronics industries etc.
Till date, technology transfer has been effected with the know-how for 12
products, around 18 Patents have been sealed, more than 50 Awards have been
won and 600 Technical papers have been published in national and international
journals.
