Mastery: Personal Development & Leadership

Charles Brown
Week Four Mastery Journal Timeline

It has been a dream of mine to work in film and television as well as being a part
of a sports organization or sports network. After 25 years of restaurant management and
ownership I decided to finally pursue these dreams. My first step in my Mastery Journey
was to achieve my Bachelors Degree in Digital Cinematography. Now that I have
accomplished that goal I am on my next step, to become a Master in my field of choice. I
am doing this by pursuing my Masters Degree in Entertainment Business Sports
Management. At the time of this paper I am approaching the end of my first course,
Mastery Development and Leadership, and have eleven more courses to go to assist me
in becoming a master in the entertainment business. The following are the courses I will
be taking and what I plan to gain from them as well as resources that will assist me in
accomplishing my goals related to each course:

1) Mastery Development & Leadership - This coursed is already helping me along my

way in my Mastery Journey. I am able to realize that I am pursuing my field that I
feel most drawn to and am learning the necessary skills to be me in the position to
attain employment in my chosen field after graduation. A great resource is Robert
Greenes YouTube Video Mastery, Talks at Google,
https://youtu.be/J4v_34RRCeE.

2) Executive Leadership. This course will be able to help me improve my leadership

skills that I have attained in my 25 years of restaurant management and ownerships. I
will be able to not only manage my self I will be able to be a successful leader in my
field and build strong teams to create the productions I want to be a part of. Here is a
link to a great Linda.com course, Executive Leadership Fundamentals with John
Ullmen, http://www.lynda.com/Business-Skills-tutorials/Executive-LeadershipFundamentals/167027-2.html.
3) Project and Team Management. Utilizing my leadership skills I will be able to
utilize the information from this course and enhance my ability to manage the preproduction, day of production, and post production of the sporting events that I want
to be a part of. There is a great Journal that can be found in the Full Sail Library that
relates directly with this topic in my field of choice, Sports Entertainment. The
journal is from author Newman, Joshua Sport without Management. Journal of
Sport Management. Nov2014, Vol. 28 Issue 6, p603-615. 13p.
4) Business Storytelling and Brand Development. Just like other entertainment fields,
it is important to be able to express the brand of productions I will be working on. I
must be able to still capture the viewers interest to stay tuned in during the entire
production. This course will help me strengthen these skills. Even though I am
relatively familiar with the Brand Development process and I am a good Storyteller I
have never looked at storytelling in a business sense. Here is a great linda.com link
for a course that discusses exactly this. Business Storytelling with C.C. Chapman,

5) Entertainment Business Finance. Just like I have to manage the day-to-day
operations of a restaurant and manage all levels of costs, sports productions are not
any different. You must be a great line producer to be able to put on a profitable
production. This course will lay out the fine details that are needed in doing so.
Since I am looking into the field of Entertainment Business with a Sports Track I
found a Scholarly Journal in the Full Sail Library that relates to this course and to my
specific field Sports Finance and Management: Real Estate, Entertainment, and the
Remaking of the Business (1st Ed). Author: Rees Jason D. Source: Journal of Sport
Management. Jan2013, Vol. 27 Issue 1, p84-85.2p.
6) Negotiation and Deal-Making. TV and Sponsor ship deals are a huge part of sports
productions at all levels, college and pro as well as even at the high school level. To
be able to negotiate and make profitable deals is very important in being able to
consistently land great sports programs for TV productions. To first understand
negotiation here is a good place to start. Negotiation Fundamentals a Linda.com
course, http://www.lynda.com/Business-Skills-tutorials/NegotiationFundamentals/101504-2.html.
7) Sports Management and Operations. You must be well versed in sports
management and operations if you are to produce sporting events on TV. Knowing
the rules, time frame, and what makes for a great sporting event is very important.
Utilizing the Full Sail Library I found a great lecture given by three Professional

Baseball General Managers that speak about the basics of Sports Management,
https://youtu.be/wbqzMbEXflk.
8) Legal Issues in Sports. With the great amounts of money and viewers in sports there
are wide range of legal issues that must be understood before any production can
begin. This course will give me an understanding of the necessary legal issues that
are mandatory in creating great sport productions. Here is a great journal on this
subject, AMERICAN NEEDLE, INC. V. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: JUSTICE
STEVENS' LAST TWINKLING OF AN EYE.
Author: Kaso-Howard, Katherine.
Source: Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review. 2011, Vol. 44 Issue 3, p1163-1178.
16p.
9) Sports Marketing and Sponsorship Sales. Marketing is a huge part of any sporting
event and understanding what and whatnot to do is very important. Learning the ins
and out of sports marketing and sponsorship gives the producer a necessary edge in
the industry. There is a very interesting case study I found in searching through the
Full Sail Library System, Branding the Rodeo: A Case Study of Tobacco Sports
Sponsorship.
Authors: Ling, Pamela M.
Haber, Lawrence A.
Wedl, Stefani
Source: American Journal of Public Health. Jan2010, Vol. 100 Issue 1, p32-42. 10p.
10) Digital Marketing. With some many devices available to view and market sporting
events and sports teams this is a great arsenal to have to be successful in sports

production. This class will lay out the ways of being successful in this medium.
Linda.com, The digital marketing landscape, from: Online Marketing
Fundamentals with Brad Batesole, is a great course on this subject.
http://www.lynda.com/Analytics-tutorials/digital-marketinglandscape/188429/367616-4.html.
11) Business Plan Development. To be able to brand yourself in this field is very
important, considering how competitive it is in gaining employment. Being able to
showcase a great business plan to market yourself will give you a needed edge. This
course will prepare me in successfully completing a business plan. Here is a great
Linda.com link for Nine Steps in Developing a Business Plan,
http://www.lynda.com/Business-Skills-tutorials/Nine-steps-developing-businessplan/115426/136618-4.html.
12) Final Project Business Plan. I will be able to actually complete a successful
business plan, which will give me an edge as I introduce myself into the sports
industry. I found a great course on Linda.com to utilize for this class and my
understanding of writing a great business plan. Creating a Business Plan with Mike
Figliuolo.

With Seattle be a good sports town already with 3 professional mens teams

and 1 womans as well as the NW Division For Fox Sports and Root Sports Networks
I intend to utilize my talents and course study to gain entrance into the world of
sports and sports broadcasting. Additionally it may be around the same time I am
scheduled to graduate that Seattle will again have a professional Basketball Team as
well as a professional Hockey team. These new sports will provide the perfect
opportunity for me to land a good career. With my current work schedule and
commitments in supporting my family I will need to wait until I am closer to
graduating before I can start seeking full time employment. In the meant time I will
try and take advantage of the vast production companies and current professional
teams to try to get my feet wet in the industry. There are always intern positions as

well as special events that I can try to get involved with on my current days off.
After the sixth class, Negotiation and Deal-Making, I believe I will be mentally
prepared for any challenge and opportunity I can be fortunate to work on. And the
classes afterwards will simply make my knowledge and understanding of the
industry even stronger as complete every new course.

Along the way I will be able to keep up with individuals and organizations in

this market and keep it logged in my PLN that I have created. This will give me a
great resource to see upcoming events and opportunities to get involved with as
well as keeping up with trends in the Sports Entertainment Field. I havent been
able to connect just yet with anyone out here that is attending Full Sail University
but I am searching for people with the same interests or related fields to get
involved with on a weekly and or monthly basis. I have reached out to some Full
Sail Graduates and have been creating a network of people that will hopefully evolve
in us working together some day.
