Read the article below and answer the following questions.

Village Life, City Life

In reality, both city and country living has their own advantages and disadvantages. In
village you are close to nature, people and less noise and pollution. However, in city, people get
better education, entertainment, work and privacy. Here are the differences between city and
village life.
Friends and Neighbours - In villages with fewer people, most people know one another.
They will know when someone needs help, through neighbours. In city, people are often
too busy. They do not have enough time to stop to say hi to neighbours, to help or to be
close with them.
Shopping - In villages, there are few shops; the shops will be closed early. Yet, shop
owners will remember your name and help you to find the items you want to buy. In city,
mega malls are built; workers come and accept your payment for things you buy, without
talking with the customers.
Entertainment - Very few entertainments are in villages. You have to do activities such
as taking a walk, sitting on the porch enjoying the fresh air and chatting with family or
friend. Lots of entertainment can be found in cities, such as, movie theaters, parks and
restaurants.
Education - Children growing up in villages do not have much access to education.
Villages may not have enough children to create higher education institutions; these kids
must go to cities to continue their educations. Cities have colleges and universities.
Libraries and museums are available in cities.
Health and Safety- Cities have many hospitals and doctors. In a city, ambulances and
fire trucks may take only few minutes to arrive at the scene. In villages, getting to a
hospital in an emergency may take lot of time. In cities, when a crime happens, police
arrive on the scene in few minutes and use latest technology to solve the crime.

Privacy - In villages there is less privacy, as neighbors often know what is going on each
other's lives. In cities people live in apartments, terrace houses that are built for more
privacy. Windows and doors are locked when they are not at home.
Work and Careers - Villages have smaller population than cities, so fewer jobs
available. Living in the city, there are thousands of job choices for all walks of life.

Section C
[ 15 marks ]
Read the passage below and answer the following questions.

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers
and groundwater), very often by human activities. Water pollution occurs when pollutants
(particles, chemicals or substances that make water contaminated) are discharged directly or
indirectly into water. Pollutants get into water mainly by human causes or factors.
The main cause of water pollution includes sewage and wastewater from industrial,
agricultural and domestic households waste. We often dump garbage into rivers and ocean
because we cannot find places on land to dump it. Besides, pesticides and herbicides used for
farms or in suburban yards may be collected by rainwater runoff and carried into streams or
rivers. Marine dumping is also another cause because some items take too long to degrade and
others take years. Water pollution can also be caused by oil spills.
Most people forget that the effects of water pollution can be very harmful not only to
humans but also animals, fish, and plants. Water pollution can kill large numbers of fish, birds,
and other animals, in some cases killing all members of a species in an affected area. Pollution
makes streams, lakes, and coastal waters unpleasant to look at, to smell, and to swim in. Fish and
shellfish harvested from polluted waters may be unsafe to eat. People who ingest polluted water

can become ill, and, with prolonged exposure, may develop cancers or bear children with birth
defects.
To control water pollution at home, first thing we can practice is by using non-toxic
soaps, detergents and cleaning products. Refrain from the use of chemical fertilizers and
pesticides on your lawn and gardens. Always dispose of paints, motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze
and other harmful chemicals in accordance with your local laws and safety regulations.
Question 26 - 33
