The little town of Laclede was first known as Eagle Postoffice. The school
district was formed 14 May 1870 with John C. Soupene the first teacher. Jennie
Hawson was the teacher in 1875earning about $25.00 per month.
About the time our Dixon, Timmons and Domeny families arrived t
postoffice was changed to Laclede with A.B. Davis appointed postmaster. Mr.
Davis also owned one of the early general stores. L.C. Prunty built a gristmill near
the Laclede bridge. . Taylor had a blacksmith shop. D. Hennekson owned a
restaurant and grocery store. Thomas Prunty owned a general store. Laclede had
a resident doctor at one time, also a drug store. .
Early settlers were John M. Jordon, Jerome Pitney, L.C. Rightmire and I.W.
Zimmerman. John W. Tanner, a Methodist Protestant minister, came to Laclede
from Ohio 1870. Mr. Tanner was the county surveyor at one time.
Two church organizations, the Methodist Protestant and Methodist Episcopal,
held forth in the upper room of the school house.
The Laclede Baptist Church began 12 April 1906. This church has survived
through the years.

EMPORIA.
The Junior "LYRE."
Hauldren-Domeny.
W.L. Hauldren, the junior
member of the LYRE firm, and
Miss Allie M. Domeny of Topeka
were married in Emporia Wednes-
day at nigh noon, by Rev. MacCur-
dy, pastor of the First Methodist
church of that place. After the
ceremony they departed for Green-
wood county, where they will visit
his relatives for a few days, they
will also visit other points of in-
terest before returning. The bride
is the daughter of G.W. Domenyof
Wamego and was raised moslly in
this county; she has a host of
friends in this locality and in
Topeka, where she has lived for
several years. It is unnecessary to
comment on the groom as he is
known to most people in this locali-
ty and is a friend to all. Mr.
Hauldren has fitted up a neat home
in this place and expects to com-
plete the furnishing on their return,
about February 1. Louisville people
are to be congratulated on having
this worthy young couple locate in
our midst as they are the class of
citizens who add to the place and
will be a help to every improve-
ment that will tend to the up build-
ing of our community. As we are
closely connected in business af-
fairs we refrain from doing justice
to this young couple in this article,
but suffice it to say, from what we
know personally no better people
are on our list of friends. One half of
the LYRE wishes them health, hap-
piness and prosperity and will
pledge ourselves to do our best to
make life pleasant for them in the
future and will endeavor to make
as much noise at the charivari as
anyone in the crowd.
