Music Video Analysis

Two music videos that I have chosen to analyse are The Monster by Eminem and also Shutdown by Skepta.
I have chosen both of these videos as they are very different types of videos however they represent a similar
music genre.
Eminems The Monster, directed by Rich Lee, is a mixture between a performance and narrative piece. The
performance side of this video is shown through the use of lip syncing throughout to show the artists singing in
time. The narrative is shown through a number of ways, firstly it is portrayed through the elevator within the
video to show the transition in time. The narrative shows the artists past through the use of references to his
older music videos such as My Name Is, Lose Yourself, 3 a.m., The Way I Am and the 2001 Grammy
Awards performance of Stan with Elton John. It also present at the end the image of the character Slim
Shady presenting Eminem with lyrics to use in his future songs.

In terms of the theorists views on most music videos this music video satisfies all three as it links with the
performance and narrative view of Joan Lynch, the enhanced performance side from Jon Gows theory and
finally this video presents a relationship between the lyrics of the track with the visuals as the title of The
Monster is representative of the character of Slim Shady, it present the artists iconography in terms of
clothing throughout the video representing different points of his music career and also the references to his
older music videos links with Andrew Goodwins theory.

Shutdown by Skepta, directed by Grace LaDoja, is contrasting in pretty much every way. To start with this
video is more of a performance piece as it mainly shows the artists performing the track rather than anything
else. There is a slight hint of a narrative but it is predominately a performance. Without the obvious lip syncing
throughout it does not show definitely who the artist is, if a new listener was to watch the video, this is due to
the camera shots not being totally focused on the artist and prefers to mix between the other people within
the video, although there is a few close-ups perhaps to counter-act this idea.

This video also satisfies the theorists views on the videos as part of Lynchs view it is a performance piece, in
terms of Gows ideas it is a song and dance number and finally it would suit Goodwins theory as is includes
genre iconography and also artist iconography though the use of the clothing in the video being from Skeptas
music labels Boy Better Know fashion company.
