The people of Samar and Leyte share a rich cultural heritage and tradition that they
have learned from their ancestors. Their ingenuity can be mirrored from their unique blending
and choice of color and intricate process in making designs that never change through
generations.
ARTS AND CRAFT
Basey in Samar is known for beautiful and colorful hand woven banig that are made
from tikog leaves. Tikog is the waray term for bariw or romblon. Mat weaving is both a
passion and occupation of many Warays. It involves a long and painful process from
gathering of tikog up to weaving thew tiny strips into an elegant mat with intersecting lines of
different colors to form diagonal motifs.
There are two process involved in making banig- lara (weaving) and burda (embroidery). In
the process of paglara (weaving), the naglalara (mat weavers) buys the raw materials from
Tacloban City, weave the materials into banig, and sell the finished base layer to tagaburda
(embroider) who make design for the mats to be sold in the marker and souvenir shops in the
locality and in the nearby province.
