standards. Following this we will begin discussion of topics for inclusion.
Here is a preliminary topic list (without much attention to order):
Scope & Purpose
Vibration basic theory and where balancing fits into this.
Natural frequency.
Critical speeds & mode shapes.
Bode & Nyquist diagrams what, why, when.
Basic testing techniques
Equipment basics
Mounting sensors
Overall vibration measurement and general tolerances
FFT analysis basics and how to confirm unbalance.
Intro to balancing (basic balancing theory)
Unbalance defined / causes, etc.
Rigid vs flexible rotors
Types of unbalance
Units
Unbalance / centrifugal force
Unbalance & eccentricity
Repeatability
Tolerance stacks
Manufacturing capabilities and their relationship to balancing
requirements.
Tolerances
Various tolerance specifications: MIL, API, ISO, etc.
Establishing a tolerance and specifying this on drawings.
Selecting a balancing speed.
Balancing Machines
Brief history

Types of balancing machines and how they work (with focus on soft- & hardbearing).
Supporting & driving a rotor.
Weight/speed limits (dynamic loading).
Testing & validation
Gage R&R (overview)
Tooling
Various types and their pros/cons.
Testing and validation of tooling.

Typical units for material properties
Terminology
Unit conversions
Common formulas

F. Action Items, location and date for Webex meetings and, next meeting.
G. Proposal by G. Allen: It will be proposed that at every meeting we ask one attendee to
present something they have work on, related to balancing, that the committee would be
