Union Elections: What you need to know!
Nominations for union elections opened this month as hopeful candidates
began submitting their entries for a variety of positions at the University of
Surrey Students’ Union. Students have until Monday 1st March at 12:00 noon
to enter the race and begin the stressful period of convincing the ruthless
student community why they deserve to be the voice of students at our
university.

Any student can run for the positions of President, Vice President for
Education, Vice President for Welfare, Vice President for Societies and
Individual Development, and Vice President for Sport and Recreation. In
a recent interview with The Stag, current union President Elizabeth Simos
offered advice to potential presidents, identifying a need to be ‘massively
passionate’ and a desire to ‘enhance the student experience’ at Surrey.

Online voting will take place between 15th and 26th March, with announcements
being held on 26th. Visit www.ussu.co.uk/elections for more information and
pick up your nomination forms from the Union reception.

The Science of Listening to your Mother
by Sophie Bryant

As a foolish and naive young person, you have

no doubt had a plethora of advice imparted to
you from older, wiser folks who’ve seen it all. But
as your mum, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles,
friends, older sisters and the old man next door tell

you ever stopped to wonder how they know these
things, and if they’re even true? Let’s have a look
at some of the classics, science style!

Of course, there is lots of fun and games too. In fact, to help model
the outbreak of a zombie infection, the Zombie Society has planned a
widespread game across campus. Initially everyone will start as a human
(marked by some form of ribbon or bandana). One person will begin as a
zombie (again marked out by a ribbon or bandana of a different colour),
and must infect the rest of the humans by stealing their marker. The hu-

will join the zombies in their attack on the humans. You’d be surprised how
quickly the infection can spread.
