INPUT
The teacher will show the students four T - C
pictures (APPENDIX 1.1) and will challenge S - S
them to guess and speculate about the story Ss - Ss
behind those four pictures.
The teacher will start the class telling the
students:
I have four different pictures in my hands.
What do you think you will have to do?
The teacher will try to elicit from the students
the task they will have to perform.
Once the students have proposed the activity
(guessing what the relationship between the
pictures is), the teacher will invite them to do
it in pairs. He will say:
Talk to your partner and, together, try to
guess the story behind these pictures.

The students will have two minutes to try to

make up a story.
After that, the learners will share their stories
orally with the rest of the class.
Then, the teacher will say:

These eight pictures represent the whole

story.
He will give each of the students a photocopy
(APPENDIX 2.2) with the eight pictures and
say:
I will tell you what really happened to me last
weekend and you need to do something with
these pictures now. Can you guess?
The students will have to guess the task: to
order the pictures from one to eight while they
listen to the whole story. The teacher will say:
You will order the pictures from one to eight
and then you will decide if I had a good or a
bad weekend.
The teacher will read the story to the
students, and they will order the pictures as
they listen. Once they have finished, the
teacher will check comprehension orally and
they will discuss if the teacher had a good or a
bad weekend.

UNDERSTANDING
The teacher will give the students a
photocopy (APPENDIX 3.1) of the story that

they have just listened to.

The students will have to answer some
comprehension questions. (APPENDIX 3.2)
and, as they answer, the teacher will copy the
students sentences on the board. The
answers to those questions will have the verb
get used in different ways. The teacher will
tell the students:

Board.

What do these sentences have in common?

Can you recognise any pattern?

The students will tell the teacher different

characteristics
the
sentences
have
in
common, until they notice the use of the verb
get.
Using different mini grammar posters T C
(APPENDIX 4.1), the teacher will help the
students organise the information about the
structure and the different meanings of the
verb get, so that it will be easier for them to
remember them. The teacher will stick the
cards on the board and organise the
grammatical information together with the
students. He will ask them questions like:

Posters,
adhesive
tape.

What is the overall meaning of GET plus

NOUN?
After that, the teacher will write the specific
meaning of each of the instances of the verb
get.
The pronunciation will be provided with little
individual posters that will be stuck next to
each expression containing the verb get.

The students will build the organisational

the board. The sentences will have the verb

get but the complement will be missing. The
teacher will say: Look under your chairs and
youll find a mini poster. The students will
look under their chairs and take the mini
posters. The teacher will say: What do you
think those words are? What do they have in
common? The teacher will elicit from the
students that the words are complements of
the verb get. Now all together well read the
sentences and each of you will stick a
complement of the verb get on its correct
place. Once the students have finished the
activities, they will write the sentences down
in a special sheet the teacher will hand them
in (APPENDIX 5.1).
During the previous task, the students wrote
the sentences (as they were on the board) in a
table available in the special sheet
(APPENDIX 6.1).
After that, the students will have to order
them to make up a short story to check in the
students have understood the meaning of the
new structures in context.
The teacher will say: I want you to write
down the sentences on that table. Then, I
want you to guess the story behind them.
Order those sentences writing the numbers
from 1 to 8 in the little boxes (in the left side
of the table). Apart from that, I would like you
to classify all the sentences according to the
complement of the verb get. You should use
GET + NOUN, GET + ADJECTIVE or GET +
ADVERB.
Once the students have finished, one of them
will read the story aloud and they will check
the order of the sentences.
Each student will read one sentence following
the original order on the board and say the
classification of the verb get.

Once the students have finished with the

special sheet activities, the teacher will set
another task. You will have to write five
sentences containing the verb get. Two of
them have to be false, and your mates will
have to guess which of them are not true.
The students will read their five sentences and
then they will discuss which of those are false.
CONSOLIDATION
Finally the teacher will ask the students: OK,
now its your turn. You have to write a text
about a memorable weekend, applying the
different uses of the verb get as much as
possible. Next class youll share it with your
partners and they will have to decide whether
it was a good or a bad weekend.
