About REEEP
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP)
is a global public-private partnership formed in 2002 during the
World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and
has the status of an international NGO. REEEP is an active, global
partnership that works to reduce the barriers limiting the uptake
of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, with a
primary focus on emerging markets and developing countries.
REEEP partners include governments, businesses, NGOs,
financiers, and other representatives of civil society. By providing
opportunities for concerted collaboration among its partners, REEEP
aims to accelerate the marketplace for renewable energy and
energy efficiency.
REEEP has a network of Regional Secretariats on the ground
around the globe, ensuring that all activities are locally relevant
and focused. The REEEP South Asia Regional Secretariat was
established in 2005 and is hosted and operated by the Asian
Energy Institute (AEI). It covers Bangladesh, Bhutan, India,
Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

India Exposition Mart Ltd. Greater NOIDA

Background
The Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC)
2010 is a part of an initiative taken at the 2002 World Summit on
Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, acknowledging the
significance of renewable energies for sustainable development
especially for combating poverty and for environmental and climate
protection. DIREC, an international platform for government,
private sector, and non-governmental leaders, is the fourth global
ministerial-level conference on renewable energy. It is being
hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE),
Government of India from 2729 October 2010 in New Delhi.
DIRECs international forum will endeavour to address the goal of
advancing renewable energy for sustainable development.
Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, ambitious targets
have been set to ensure that there is wide-scale penetration of
solar water heating systems in domestic as well as industrial
sectors. The goal, therefore, is to achieve 15 million m2 solar
thermal collector area by 2017 and 20 million m2 by 2022. MNRE is
also implementing a UNDP/GEF assisted project on Global solar
water heating market transformation and strengthening initiative:
India country programme.
This Parallel Event is being organized by REEEP and MNRE along
with TERI and UNDP against the aforementioned backdrop, with
an aim to bring together national and international actors in the
field of solar water heating.
Objectives
The broad objectives of this event are as follows.
To provide a platform for sharing of experiences of the international
experts and practitioners
To derive learnings from the global programmes to accelerate
penetration of solar water heating systems in India
About UNDP/GEF Global Solar Water Heating Project
The MNRE is implementing a UNDP/GEF assisted Project on Global
solar water heating market transformation and strengthening
initiative: India country programme. The objective of the project
is to accelerate and sustain the growth of the solar water heating
market in India through a combination of financial and promotional
incentives, and other support measures, so as to conserve

electricity and other fossil fuels, apart from peak load shaving in
cities and towns; and to use the experiences and lessons learned
towards promoting similar growth in other countries. The project
will contribute partially and leverage the Eleventh Five-year Plan
target through installation of 2 million m2 of solar water heating
systems. This will result in GHG emission reduction of 11 million
tonnes of CO2.
