Cyber Infrastructure for the Smart

Grid
Dr. Anurag K. Srivastava, Dr. Carl Hauser, and Dr. Dave Bakken

Smart Grid Use Cases: Part 1

Conceptual Model
A next-generation electrical power system that is typified by the increased use of
communications and information technology in the generation, delivery and
consumption of electrical energy

(i) the Power and Energy Layer, (ii) the Communication Layer and (iii) the
IT/Computer Layer. Layers (ii) and (iii) are enabling infrastructure platforms of
the Power and Energy Layer that makes the grid "smarter."

AVISTA Smart Grid (SG)

Avista Utilities (Avista) Spokane Smart Circuit project aims:
to reduce energy losses and improve reliability and efficiency in the electricity
distribution system while reducing the need for new generation facilities.
The project includes upgrading the distribution system by automating the
management of the distribution grid and installing a rapid communications and
monitoring infrastructure.
New switches, capacitors, and sensors are being installed in substations and
distribution circuits across the project area.
This equipment provides automated regulation of power quality, rapid
response to grid disturbances, and improvements to distribution reliability.
A radio and fiber optic communications system integrates real-time data from
grid sensors with the grid operators distribution management software
platform.
The upgrades reduce the need for truck visits for system maintenance and
operations and reduce costs and emissions.

Florida Power and Light SG

Florida Power & Light Company, located in Miami, Florida, has been awarded
$200 million in funding to develop a smarter, more efficient energy grid.
Installing over 2.6 million smart meters, 9,000 intelligent distribution devices, 45
phasors, and advanced monitoring equipment in over 270 substations.
By incorporating intelligence into the transmission, distribution and customer
systems, the utility will be able to anticipate and respond to grid disturbances,
empower customers through alternative rate programs, and enable the integration
of renewable and on-site energy sources.

ISO New England SG

Project Summary:
ISO New England, Inc., located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, has been
rewarded $3.7 million in federal funding to develop a smarter, more efficient
energy grid.
The U.S. Department of Energy chose ISO New England as one of 100
companies nationwide to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The project started in 2010 and its focus is to install 30 synchrophasors and
connect the independent systems operators in New England to increase
response time to real time system events and reduce congestion by being able
to collect and share synchrophasor and disturbance data with other regions for
wide area monitoring.
Equipment:
-Synchrophasor Communications Network-40 Phasor Measurement UnitsPhasor Data Concentrators
Targeted Benefits:
-Reduced Wide-Scale Blackouts-Increased Electric Service Reliability
