AICPA Practitioners Symposium and TECH+ Conference
RECOMMENDED CPE CREDIT: 24.5 (main), 4 (pre-conference workshop) and 1.5 (complimentary roundtables)

Dear Valued Attendee,

For the first time ever, we’re offering two must-attend conferences together. Here’s why…
With the growing complexity of today’s accounting and auditing functions, accountants and auditors are depending more and more on advances
in technology to perform their jobs. That is why it is more important than ever for CPAs to understand how technology influences these functions
and vice versa. With that in mind, we are offering the AICPA Practitioners Symposium and the AICPA TECH+ Conference together,
and allowing attendees to attend sessions at both conferences.
Transforming Today’s Challenges into Tomorrow’s Opportunities
Bringing these two conferences together provides a one-stop learning experience for the practitioner, the firm administrator, and the consultant.
At the same time, each conference offers a complete learning experience for the attendee. The sessions for the Practitioners Symposium were selected
to give the practitioner a complete update on accounting, auditing, tax, and practice management topics. The sessions for TECH+ were selected to
give the technology practitioner, the consultant, and the IT professional a well-rounded view of what is important to know today and what is on
the horizon. With so many learning opportunities available, this is the perfect venue to have a colleague join you.
We urge you to review the Conference Agenda grid on pages 12-13 to see how these two conferences are being presented—and then map
out the learning experience for yourself, your staff and your colleagues. Remember, just one conference registration gives you access to all
of the sessions presented at these two great events.
We look forward to seeing you in June at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Sincerely,

James Metzler Mike Shost Peyton Burch

This session will describe requirements for IT considerations associated with the audit risk standards, SAS 104-111, along with methods and
approaches for planning, conducting and reporting IT risk assessments to fulfill these risk based standards, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency
of the financial audit process. While these standards now require auditors to have a more comprehensive understanding of an entity’s internal controls,
the documentation of the internal control procedures and policies is a good best practice for any company (public or private), as it outlines how
information flows through the financial reporting system and assigns responsibility for the steps within each cycle. It requires both the IT professional
and the financial auditor to understand the processes. This session will be of value to both the financial auditor and the IT professional.
103 TAX SEASON DEBRIEF T

for a more efficient tax season in 2010/11. This is a great opportunity to learn from the best practices of other firms.

2 FL!P: HOW TO FIND AND EXPLOIT OPPORTUNITIES IN AN UPSIDE-DOWN WORLD SKA
Peter Sheahan, Successful Entrepreneur and Best-Selling Author, Los Angeles, CA

Peter is a successful entrepreneur, best-selling author and world renowned speaker on exploiting business trends and new market opportunities. He is an
expert in Gen Y trends, and has established himself as a leading expert in workforce trends and generational change. In the past three years, Peter has built
a multimillion dollar consulting practice attracting clients such as News Corp., Google, Coca Cola, L’Oreal, and Ernst & Young. He believes that real money

Fl!p is your inspiring strategy for finding opportunities in a down market through courageous leadership, innovation and change.
Emphasizing the need for mindset flexibility, Fl!p will:
• Deliver dozens of examples and strategies for finding opportunity and making money in tough economic times
• Disclose the 4 key mindsets leaders need to adopt to future-proof their organizations
• Reveal the secret to engaging your team in uncertain times

business models and conned by the popular media into believing that success or failure is merely a product of the economic conditions.
This session will not only help you and your team develop the mindset required to find opportunity everywhere, it will mobilize you to exploit it.

ADV 6 ADVISING THE TROUBLED BUSINESS SKA
Katie Goodman, Managing Partner, Grisanti Galef & Goldress, Atlanta, GA
There were over 40,000 business bankruptcies in 2008 and 2009; there will be little improvement in 2010. While companies can blame
“the economy” for poor financial performance, it does not help corporate survival. Companies fail for common reasons. To survive the current crisis,
professionals can assist their clients by identifying “what went wrong” and implementing swift corrective actions. While there is no “silver bullet,”
there are several key practical steps that can pave the way to long term corporate viability.
TECH 7 ONE ON ONE WITH PETER SHEAHAN SKA

L1 “YOU” ARE THE VALUE! SKA
Leo Pusateri, President, Pusateri Consulting and Training, Williamsville, NY

Passionate, inspirational and motivating are words many would use to describe Leo Pusateri. He is the premier coach in the financial services industry,
helping organizations and individuals discover, articulate and capitalize on their value. Leo’s thirty-year background includes leading the sales and marketing
efforts of a nationally recognized investment advisory firm and years working as a sales consultant helping Fortune 500 companies with their sales
productivity issues. His acclaimed book, Mirror Mirror on the Wall Am I the Most Valued of Them All? published in 2002, describes in detail his
unique and powerful Value Ladder™ process.

You need to know your value before you can sell your value. CPAs and professionals cannot expect clients to understand their value unless they can
articulate all they have to offer and what sets them apart from others. Many of the most successful CPAs or CPA teams still “wing it” with clients and
prospects. Leo Pusateri will present the seven Value Ladder™ questions all CPAs need to answer with confidence, passion and speed to win business
in a competitive marketplace. Known as the Value Ladder™, the seven questions—Who are you? What do you do? Why do you do what you do?
How do you do what you do? Who have you done it for? What makes you different? Why should I do business with you?—challenge participants
to define their background, unique value proposition, business beliefs, processes, client success stories, core values and their real value answers.
Participants walk away with a simple mental framework to differentiate their company, solutions and, most important, themselves, in any formal or
informal meeting with clients and prospects. The ultimate goal is to achieve value moments of truth with existing clients or new business opportunities.

of communication skills. This session will focus on the “hows” and “whys” of dealing with IRS collections.
MAP 13 LINKING PARTNER ACCOUNTABILITY AND COMPENSATION STRUCTURE BMO
Timothy Michel, CPA, Principal, Michel Consulting Group LLC, New Philadelphia, OH
The duties of a CPA firm owner are many and varied. To be effective, an owner must focus his/her efforts on doing the things that increase firm value.
Too often, the owner compensation plan actually works against achieving firm objectives. The firm’s compensation program should drive owner’s
activities that are consistent with firm objectives and reward them for the value they bring to the firm. This session will focus on:
• Identifying valued owner activities • Encouraging owners to play to their strengths
• Compensation plan attributes that bring unwanted results • Using the compensation plan to achieve firm objectives
• Recognizing that not all owners provide equal value

TECH 16 CALCULATING TCO IN A SAAS WORLD – IS IT REALLY CHEAPER? SKA
Geni Whitehouse, Founder, Even A Nerd Can Be Heard, Pleasanton, CA
Let’s talk dollars and cents. We’ve all heard the hype about cloud computing—but there are plenty of unanswered questions. Questions like:
What’s the real story when you are trying to compare the costs of Software as a Service (SaaS) with more traditional deployment options? Are there
realized benefits if you continue to operate with one foot in the world of “on premise” applications and the other in the land of SaaS? What does it
cost me from a speed perspective if I do everything via the cloud? And what about other issues, like AirCards, high speed Internet connections,
and security—how much is that going to add to my cost?
In this session, you’ll get answers to these questions and more, plus walk away with nuts and bolts information you can use to compute the

Select One A&A 200 SAS 70 COMPLIANCE A, AU
Concurrent Steven Ursillo Jr., CPA.CITP, CIA, CFE, CISA, CISM, CISS, Sparrow, Johnson & Ursillo, West Warwick, RI
Session The expanded use of third party service providers by many organizations has left auditors and risk managers struggling to assert vendor management,
legislative and regulatory requirements from internal control procedures outside the ownership of their organization. As a result, the demand for SAS 70
compliance continues to gain momentum as these organizations are tasked with gaining assurance on the relevant internal controls and controls around
financial reporting necessary to assist in managing third party service provider risk. This session will provide practitioners with information relevant to
understanding SAS 70 compliance, and will include SAS 70 usage, reporting, common areas of coverage, and comparisons with other types
of attestations. The information will be relevant for members in the third party service provider industry, practitioners with third party service
provider clientele, as well as the user organizations and user auditors they serve.
TAX 201 TAX PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS – MAKING THEM WORK FOR YOU T

when they want it. A good portal solution will also help the practitioner to comply with federal and state rules and regulations that surround
client information, confidentiality and privacy. Jim will discuss some of the client portal solutions available in the marketplace today.

Concurrent John Hall, CPA, Hall Consulting, Inc., Vail, CO
Session Accounting and assurance professionals have limited responsibility for detection of dishonesty and fraud. Yet history has consistently shown

owners do not trust their partners. Wow! Attend this session to explore the cornerstones of trust in your relationships with others, focusing on those
with staff, peers, partners, and clients. Together, we’ll learn how to trust more, and how to earn and maintain the trust of others. We’ll discuss:
• How trust is earned and maintained • Trust-building behaviors including integrity, accountability and straight talk
• What to do when trust erodes or is broken • The fundamentals of forgiveness
People who trust you will engage meaningfully with you, they’ll work tirelessly for you, they’ll support you, and they’ll speak highly of you, too.
Leave this session with insights and actions you can take to enhance the trust in your relationships.

academic, government) in identifying opportunities in the areas of marketing, product development, strategic planning, investments, human resources, public
affairs and advertising. Clients have ranged from the U.S. Congress to many of the Fortune 500 companies. She is acknowledged as one of the most influential
practitioners of social, technological, political and economic intelligence-gathering. Ms. Weiner was the youngest outside woman ever elected to the board of
directors of a major financial institution when she joined the board of Union Mutual Life Insurance Company (now UNUM Provident Corporation) at the age of 29.
She has been a guest lecturer at Wharton, Harvard, Brown and a number of other universities. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including
The Harvard Business Review, The Futurist, and The Wall Street Journal. She has co-authored four books with her partner Arnold Brown: Supermanaging (McGraw-Hill, 1984),
Office Biology (MasterMedia, 1993), Insider’s Guide to the Future (Bottom Line, 1997), and FutureThink (Prentice Hall, 2006).
Throughout the 1990s, she founded and chaired the Esteem Teams, an innovative program in which dozens of inner city, at-risk girls were mentored by executive women.
She serves on numerous boards and advisory boards, including the US Comptroller General’s Advisory Board, the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, the Women’s Leadership Exchange,

In a world of rapidly advancing technology, economic turmoil, regulatory confusion, demographic transitions and societal dislocations, there are some
certainties that remain constant for all professions and professionals. Listening to the needs of the marketplace, operating out of integrity, remaining
flexible, finding good talent and seizing emerging opportunities are always good strategies. But even these will become more difficult in the coming
decade. This session will highlight some of the opportunities and challenges facing those in the accounting profession arising out of social, economic,
technological, political, demographic and environmental shifts. It will not only provide some broad overviews, but there will also be specific ideas for
business development and well as personal and professional growth.
