Troy Grays is a ten year old boy who was in an
automobile accident on Thanksgiving Day, 2009,
that resulted in severe head injuries and a broken
neck. He will have to wear a neck brace for the rest
of his life, and also cope with the problems from
the head injuries.
Troy lost his two sisters in the accident and is
going through some very hard times in his young
life. His mother is a single mom, who not only is
dealing with the pain of losing two daughters, and
her son’s severe injuries, she also is facing huge

Against Hunger movement, sponsored by the
noted philanthropist, Alan Feinstein, is offering
their yearly challenge. During these two months
only, any monetary and/or food donations made
to Helping Hands will be totaled and the amount
reported to the Feinstein Foundation in order to
qualify Helping Hands for a portion of the one
million dollars that has been set aside to match
funds. The amount Helping Hands receives will
be its portion when all the qualifying food pan-
tries in the United States have submitted their
donation amounts. The more Helping Hands col-
lects, the larger the percentage they will receive.
Donations may be taken to either Howard City
bank (Firstbank or Independent), dropped off at
the pantry during regular open hours, or mailed
directly to Helping Hands at P. O. Box 532, How-
ard City, MI 49329. (If a receipt is needed, a re-
quest, along with your name and address, must
accompany checks.)
The goal is to collect as much as possible dur-
ing the above time frame so that Helping Hands
will receive a greater amount of the million dol-
lars and all involved with Helping Hands wish to

Perfect Day for Winter Fun on the North Country Trail
The members of the West Michi-
gan Chapter of the North Country
Trail Association had a beautiful day
of winter fun at the Loda Lake Wild-
flower Preserve on Saturday February
20th. The weather was perfect - warm
sun, mild temperatures, and no wind.
After starting the day by enjoying deli-
cious pastries with fellow participants,
it was time to strap on snowshoes or
cross-country skis for a delightful
hike around Loda Lake. At the end of
the scenic and sunny trek it was back
to the Birch Grove Schoolhouse, the
Chapter’s base in Newaygo County
located a few miles north of White
Cloud, for more good food and enjoy-
able company.

Air Force Airman Jesse F. Waldron gradu-

Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-
week program that included training in military
discipline and studies, Air Force core values,
physical fitness, and basic warfare principles

Airmen who complete basic training earn
four credits toward an associate in applied sci-
ence degree through the Community College of
the Air Force.

message being sent to
students
To The ediTor:
I went to the community forum meeting Mon-
day, March 1st. After listening to everything about
closing schools, firing teachers and possible con-
cessions to the teacher contracts. I left the meeting
in shock.
From what I understand some not all teach-
ers are opposed to any contract concessions. The
choice is simple we fire 15+ teachers or they take
some concessions. They would rather have their
coworkers fired than have to take concessions. My
concern is our children are with these teachers 6-7
hours a day. They spend more time with our chil-
dren than we do on a weekday basis. What kind of
morals and behaviors are we allowing to be taught
to our children. I am not sure about you but, myself
this is not acceptable behavior I want my child to
exhibit. Shouldn’t we teach our children compas-
sion, understanding, and not teach them to stomp
on anyone to get ahead. I am not confident that
this thought process the teachers are exhibiting are
something I want passed on to my child. Like it or
not teachers are role models. When the behavior
of a teacher impacts education or behavior of our
children then that is a problem. Maybe we should
be taking a second look at these teachers who are
willing to throw one under the bus to save the cost
of healthcare. As I look at it they are lucky to have
a job. They should be fortunate they are not in the
unemployment line like most of our state. Be grate-
ful you have a job and try and help save those of
whose jobs are on the line.

MCC seeks community input
SIDNEY – Montcalm Community College is hosting a series
of public forums to gather input from people in the communities
it serves.
MCC President Bob Ferrentino said the purpose of the gather-
ings is to give people a voice in planning for the future as the col-
lege continues to focus on how to best serve the educational needs
of the community during the nation’s difficult economic times.
“We have spent the last few months discussing our future and
putting together the initial pieces of a new institutional strategic
plan,” Ferrentino said. “As we continue to work on this important
topic, we would like people to share with us their thoughts, ideas
and dreams for the college.”
The sessions include:

There’s good news, bad news and bet-
ter news about fitness for older Ameri-
cans.
The good news is that just as peer
pressure can affect how you act when
you’re young, it can encourage adults to
stick to their exercise regimen. That’s
important, since the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention says every week,
older adults need at least:
• 150 minutes of moderate-intensity
aerobic activity (brisk walking), 75 min-
utes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity
(jogging or running) or a combination of
both; and
• muscle-strengthening activities on
two or more days that work all major
muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdo-
men, chest, shoulders and arms).
The bad news, according to an AARP
survey, is that more than six in 10 adults
aged 45 and older say they exercise less
than they did five years ago.
The better news is that in order to en-
courage older Americans to live health-
ier lives, AARP provides free support to
anyone interested in becoming a “Fitness
Ambassador” by starting a walking pro-
gram. Fitness Ambassadors are everyday
people, such as retirees and others inter-
ested in health and fitness. One such is
Cathy Nemerovski. While exercise has al-
ways been an integral part of her life, she
didn’t train to become a gym instructor
until her 50s. A year ago, a broken foot
forced her to re-evaluate her exercise
regimen.
“I had just turned 60 and because of
my injury, I had gotten a glimpse into
what it would be like to be getting older
and having your body change. So I de-
cided I wanted to focus my teaching on

Montcalm County Animal Shelter
in Stanton. Nettie is an adult long-
haired cat, about 13 lbs. (most of
that fur!) and has attractive gray/
brown tabby markings. She was
brought into the shelter on February
3rd, and is available for adoption
immediately. One of her favorite
habits is kneading blankets with her paws - she’s very
affectionate, very easy-going, and very friendly. Nettie’s

Help For Heartburn By Tresa Erickson
The older you get, the more heartburn you seem to experience. What once
occurred two or three times a year now occurs monthly, if not weekly. Isn't
there some way you can put an end to the madness? Perhaps, but only if
you are willing to make some changes in your diet and the way you eat.
Many acidic and high-fat foods irritate the stomach lining and reduce pres-
sure in the lower sphincter muscle, compromising its ability to stop stom-
ach acids from splashing back up into the esophagus and causing heart-
burn. In order to find out exactly what foods cause you heartburn, you must
keep a food diary. Only then will you know for certain what you should and
should not be eating.
Spicy and fried foods are known for causing heartburn. Specific foods that
may pose a problem for you include:
• Buffalo wings • Brownies • Butter cookies • Chicken nuggets • Chocolate
• Coffee • Corn chips • Cottage cheese • Cranberry juice
• Creamy/oily salad dressings • Doughnuts • Grapefruit juice • Ground beef
• Ice cream • Lemons & lemonade • Liquor & wine • Macaroni & cheese
• Marbled sirloin • Orange juice • Potato chips • Potato salad • Soda
• Sour cream • Spaghetti with marinara sauce • Tea • Tomatoes
Again, the only way to know for sure if these foods will cause you heartburn
is to eat them and record the after-effects in your food diary. You might
find that spaghetti doesn't bother you as much as orange juice and potato
salad do.
Along with watching the foods you eat, you need to make some changes
in your consumption of them. Eat slowly and eat less. The quicker you eat,
the less likely you are to feel full and the more you will eat. The more food
you eat, the longer it will sit in your stomach and the more likely it will stir
up acid.
You might also want to keep some safe snacks around that you can eat.
Some of the foods known for neutralizing stomach acid and keeping heart-
burn at bay include: • Avocados • Bananas • Breads & cereals • Broccoli •
Carrots • Crackers
• Green beans • Oatmeal • Papayas • Peas • Pineapple • Rice
There is no surefire, quick fix for heartburn. You can, however, keep it at bay
by identifying what triggers it and eating in moderation.
