Blessing of the Fleet

This week we celebrated as a wider community R U OK day? what a wonderful

initiative of Gavin Larkin and Janina Nearn. At the loss of his father Barry to Suicide, his
son Gavin found himself in the grip of a deep grief and with lots of unanswered
questions. Out of his grief and together with Janina he founded a day where the
community would and could be encouraged to notice the struggles of others and to feel
empowered to ask Are you ok? He remained a champion of the campaign right up to
his own death in 2011. He encouraged our community to not only ask R U OK? but to
persist in hearing the response. There should never be a stigma around mental health.
So lets not leave the R U Ok? to one day! And when we are asked, be strong enough to
speak honestly!

Pastoral Team Meeting

Forster 4:30pm

So God Bless Buddy Franklin who has reminded us very publically that it is okay to talk
about Mental Health issues, that its ok to ask for help and most importantly to allow
others, family and community, to support us. It doesnt make us weak, dumb,
incompetent, inefficient, unmanly: it simply says that for this time in our lives we need to
be supported. Paul reminds in his letter to the Romans that when we are weak, then we
are strong. Thats faith! Without talking about these things freely and without prejudice
it remains hidden, dark, and sadly for those suffering alone a growing problem. There are
too many issues we keep un-talked about, hidden and shameful. If we dont know what
to do there are places we can go to get support.

Tuncurry following 9am Mass

Forster 11am

Remarkably at some point or another each one of us will experience a mental health
issue and be part of the journey with someone who is struggling. We may not necessarily
have a diagnosable condition but for a time we will be struggling with depression, grief,
uncertainty, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, feeling lost and alone.

Mass at Kularoo Grdns

Forster 2pm

Best wishes,

Greg

Holy Name Kitchen Garden

Kellie Spinks from Holy Name school is
interested to hear from parishioners
who may like to be involved in the
Kitchen Garden at the school. The aim of
the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
Foundation is to introduce pleasurable
food education into as many Australian
primary schools as possible.
The program emphasises the flavours as
well as the health benefits of fresh,
seasonal food.
Dishes cooked reflect the vegetables,
herbs and fruits grown, season-byseason, by the children in their organic
gardens.
Kitchen Specialist instructors emphasise
balance and moderation, and endorse
the concept of preparing fruit-based
desserts sometimes' only.
The Program is designed to be fully
integrated into the primary school
curriculum as it offers infinite
possibilities to reinforce literacy,
numeracy, science, cultural studies and
all aspects of environmental
sustainability.
In addition, pleasurable food education
delivers observable social benefits to all
students, including those with special
needs. A Working With Children check
required. Contact Kellie Spinks 0431 927
