Abstract
This research is concerned about homosexuality in the 21 st century most especially about the
different kinds of reaction people give, both positive and negative, when they see homosexuals.
This research aims to get more information about the homosexuals in order for us to understand
them more. This also aims to give readers a wider knowledge about homosexuality.
Homosexuals continue to receive negative feedbacks from our society despite their prevalence.
To answer this, we must first identify what are homosexuals and why are there homosexuals. We
conducted this study to give explanations to those questions and thus will help us know why
homosexuals continue to receive negative feedbacks from our society. To aid us in our study, we
conducted a survey and a participant observation. Both methods were conducted successfully
and provided answers to our questions and supported our hypothesis. From our study, we could
draw that homosexuals are still not totally accepted in our society.

Introduction
In our society, people have different roles to play, different goals to pursue and different
ways to live in their own life. We are free to do what we want to do. We are free to be what we
want to be, to express ourselves more and to make our lives better.
We have a friend. In his situation, we can see that from the way he walks, talks, the way
he dresses and the way he utter words, he is a part of the homosexual society. But even though he
is a part of it, we don't see that he is discriminated by other people. In fact, he inspires everyone
in a manner that he is expressing himself in the way he wants. He also makes people happy not
because he looks ridiculous but because it is natural for him to make people smile.
According to Mr Google, homosexuals are people who are really attracted to a person of
their own gender. Today, the concept of homosexuality is a common issue to the society. That is
why many of us have already accepted the fact that they are a part of the modern civilization.
Even though they are now accepted, there are still some people who don`t like them. People may
have positive insights but behind those positive insights, there are still some negative feedbacks
that homosexuals will try to accept no matter what just to be a part of the society.
That is the purpose of our thesis, to know more about them including the different
reactions or feedbacks people give to them and to know why they are increasing in number
despite of the challenges that they are facing in their everyday life.
The succeeding page shows the proposal for our thesis including our objectives,
hypotheses and form of getting information.

Scopes and Limitations

Our study focuses on the homosexuals race in the Philippines. The researches wanted to
know why the homosexuals number is increasing despite of the negative feedbacks they receive
in the society and what are the causes of homosexuality. We wanted to know a lot from them,
but we only had a limited time to do that. So that is why we have chosen to cover some specific
topics to at least widen the knowledge of our readers about homosexuals such as: Who are the
homosexuals? What are the causes of homosexuality? And how did people react when they see
a homosexual?
Methodology

The purpose of this study is to aid us in identifying peoples reaction and insights about
homosexuals. Our objective is to know why their number is increasing despite of the challenges
that they face. We, the researchers, conducted a participant observation in a public place and a
survey, inside and outside of our school, the Technological University of the Philippines Taguig
Campus. We used this kind of methodology because we think that it is the most useful method to
know about the peoples insights about the homosexuals.
Participants
Our respondents were normal, able-bodied, heterosexual citizens of the Philippines. For
our survey, we randomly selected 40 students, 19 girls and 21 boys, from the Technological
University of the Philippines-Taguig Campus and 30 average people, 19 females and 11 males,
passing by in a residential area in Taguig City. For our participant observation, we randomly
interviewed people whom we noticed that gave quite a reaction.
Materials
We constructed a survey from containing 5 questions about the peoples reaction when
they see homosexuals, what do they think is the reason why homosexuals continue to receive
negative feedbacks, what do they think are the causes of homosexuality, do they know a
homosexuals who experiences abuse from other people, and do they believe that homosexuals
will be truly accepted in our society. For our participant observation, we used make-up, wig, high
heels and a kind of clothing typically worn by females.
Research Design

We decided to conduct a survey and do a participant observation.
Procedures
In our participant observation, one of the researchers of the group pretended that he is a
gay. We did some makeover in order for him to look gay. We put some make-up and made him
wear a wig. In short, we made him look like a girl and we pushed him to wear heels which
happen to be five inches long. Afterwards, we went to Festival Mall located in Alabang. We let
him walk around the mall as we observed the different reactions of the people who saw him. We
also asked a few people regarding how they feel when they saw a gay wearing those kinds of
clothes.
We also conducted a survey to aid us in our study. We surveyed seventy people. Forty
persons from our school and the other thirty were from outside the school. We finished our
survey in school earlier than we expected, because the students that we approached didnt refuse
to answer the survey questionnaires. Our survey outside the school was very different. Almost all
of the people we approached refused to answer the questionnaires. Others laughed when they
heard the word bakla or tomboy. Others seemed to be forced in answering the said
questionnaires. But the important thing is that we have done our methodology properly and
successfully.
We analyzed the data we have gathered from our survey by tallying the results. By that,
we found out what most of the people answered and thus helping us to draw out our conclusions
which will be stated in the succeeding pages to come. The data and analysis of the results of our
survey is located in the Data and Results page.

Analysis
In the survey we have done, we found out that a lot of males react normally when they
see homosexuals. They believe that homosexuality is caused by the physical environment. On the
other hand, a lot of females feel sorry for those people who turned homosexuals because they
think that those people have a better future. They believe that homosexuality is caused by the
interpersonal relationship of people. But they agree that they know a homosexual who
experiences abuse (e.g. bullying, discrimination, beatings) from other people. They think that,
homosexuals continually receive negative feedbacks from others in the reason of they are still
not totally accepted in the society. But they believe that there will be a time that homosexulas
will be totally accepted in the society.

child turns out to be gay at pubertal stage. Its up to the parents if they will encourage it or

This is a documentary made by the National Geographic Channel about the biological anatomy
of homosexuals. They look at how it is possible for one identical twin to be gay and the other to
be straight. They believe that there is a scientific explanation for homosexuality. National

Geographic explains how one's sexual orientation is determined during embryonic development.
They studied the embryonic development of a fetus and they have noticed that homosexuals had
not or did not go through a specific stage in the said development. They address a new branch of
Genetics called, Epigenetics. This area of Genetics explores and explains how one's DNA
sequence is not the only factor in one's actual outcome. They finally conlcuded that
homosexuality also depends on the gene of a person.
Definition of terms
1. Homosexuality a person who is sexually attracted to people of the same sex.

13. Prenatal (antenatal development) is the process in which a human embryo or fetus
gestates during pregnancy, from fertilization until birth. Often, the terms fetal
development, fetal development, or embryology are used in a similar sense.

15. Ray Milton Blanchard - is an American-Canadian sexologist, best known for his research
studies and controversial views on pedophilia, transsexuals, and sexual orientation.

response.[1] An antigen is often foreign or toxic to the body. An antigen is molecule that
also induces an immune response in the body.
17. Heterosexual - a person is attracted to people of the opposite sex. Boys who like girls and
women who like men are heterosexual.

18. Fraternal birth order effect - the theory that the more older brothers a young male has in
his family, the more likely he is to be homosexual. With the new birth of each boy, the
likelihood of homosexuality increases by 1 percent.
19. Sexual orientation - is an enduring personal quality that inclines people to feel romantic
or sexual attraction to persons of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to
either sexes or more than one gender.
Discussion
A. Who are the homosexuals?
There is no precise definition for homosexuals but as you can see, homosexuals are the
people who are sexually attracted to people of the same sex. It is better to tell what a homosexual
is not. According to Jhayvot Galang, a blogger, being a homosexual is not a disease or disorder
that can be treated or changed. It is not even a choice. It is not like waking up one morning and
got tired of being a man and wanted to be a gay. Its a state of being. Homosexuality is a normal
and an expected event for between five to ten percent of the population in the whole world.
These homosexuals are composed of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender.
Homosexual men are called Gays. Comparing Gay men to lesbians, Gay men
contribute more to the society than lesbians. Most people admire them for their confidence, talent
and skills. A woman once told us while we were doing the survey, It is better to have a
homosexual son than a straight son. Why? It is because they love their family so much. They
sacrifice so much just to provide the needs of their family. Theyre hard-working and most of
them really bring joy to people and those are some of the reasons why gays are being tolerated.
In the Philippines, Gays are part of the well-known people in the industry. An example of that is

the comedian, Vice Ganda. He is one of the most influential people in the country. He is known
for his hilarious jokes and he is very good in the field of comedy.
Homosexual women are called the lesbians. Lesbians and Gays are alike when it comes
to appearances. Most of the women involved in a same-sex relationship always say that they like
lesbians more than men because they give long-lasting relationships but there is one thing that is
not quite right in lesbian relationships and its that most of them are so affectionate that it feels
like theyre smothering you.
People who are sexually attracted to both male and female are called bisexuals. They
cant really tell what their gender really is. They are in the state of identity crisis. They cant be
in between and so they have to make a choice. According to an article, Common myths of

people who are open to exploration with the two genders. But there really is no such thing as
bisexuality. A person who experiences having a crush on the same sex and on the opposite sex at
some point in their lives doesnt make him/her a bisexual. To become a bisexual, you have to
love both genders equally.
A person who underwent surgeries just to be considered as a member of the opposite sex
is called a transgender. A transgender is considered as a gay or a lesbian but the only difference
is that these people are born with the typical male and female anatomies but feel like their souls
have been put into a wrong body.
Cross-dressers can also be considered as homosexuals but not all of them because some
cross-dressers just like to wear girls clothes or wear boys clothes but theyre not really

homosexuals. There are many kinds of homosexuals. Cross-dresser is also a name for
homosexuals who totally change their appearances like gays wearing make-up, changing their
hair and their way of clothing.
Most gays really wear womens clothes and the rest wear mens clothes because they said
that its more decent. Some people are having a hard time distinguishing which among the people
they see are homosexuals? You can determine gays by just watching their actions. The case is
quite different when it comes to lesbians.
You cant easily tell if a person is a lesbian or not. Some of them wear mens clothes
because they want to look masculine while others stayed in their usual self.
B. What are the Causes of Homosexuality?
There are a lot of logical and possible reasons to homosexuality. It cant be possible that
it just happened. There are explanations to why homosexuality arises. Based on the survey that
we have conducted, most people said that the main cause of homosexuality is the external
environment of the people. The kind of people they interact with and the kind of people
surrounding them may determine their personality. Although this explanation is based on
laymans thinking, there are some scientific, logical and probable causes of homosexuality which
will be discussed in the succeeding pages. However, these are not actual causes. They are all just
probable causes or in other words, theories which are temporarily accepted to be true.
Weve surveyed 70 random people, 40 persons in the Technological University of the
Philippines-Taguig Campus and 30 persons outside the campus. We received different feedbacks
from the people weve surveyed. One of the feed backs that we have received came from a group

of women. They said that homosexuality is hereditary and the people who are homophobic and
afraid of homosexuals have the chance or probability to be a homosexual.
The results show that a lot of females believed that homosexuality is caused by the
interpersonal relationship of people and a lot of males believe that it is caused by the physical
environment. But these causes are only based on the beliefs of the people. What about the
probable causes based on the experts studies?
Based on our studies, using the internet as a source, there is a biological cause for
homosexuality. Dr. Simon LeVay, a neuroscientist, studied the brains of 41 people and 19 of
those were homosexuals. He concluded that the hypothalamus of gay men was smaller compared
to the hypothalamus of the straight men. This was at first considered as irrefutable. The reason
for that is because we do not know when it got there. Was it prenatal or postnatal?
Another study came out by Ray Blanchard, Professor of Psychiatry of the University of
Toronto. A body of a pregnant woman is exposed to male-specific anti-gen and theres a
molecule that normally turns the fetus into a heterosexual but the immune system of the mother
produces enough antibodies to prevent the fetus from become straight. The foundation of his
study came from the phenomenon called the fraternal birth order effect. This phenomenon shows
that men with older brothers are more likely to be gay than men with older sister or no siblings at
all. The most recent studies also shows that the more the older brothers, the more chance of that
person to be gay but only in right-handed males.

Some articles and studies tell that environmental factors play a big role in homosexuality.
But according to an article by Dan Eden entitled Environmental causes of Homosexuality,

some cases, play no role at all. It is also stated there that biology is the core of sexual orientation.
The scientists in Stockholm Brain Institute in Sweden tell that homosexual men and straight
women share similar traits, the same with homosexual women and straight men, particularly in
the sizes of their brains and activities of the amygdala. If were going to sum up the particular
similarities of the studies of our experts, homosexuality is inborn.
C. Peoples Reaction and Insights

We had 2 methods in mind for gathering data for our thesis. The first is in the form of a
Participant Observation and the other one is conducting a survey. The main purpose of
conducting those methods is mainly to see how people reacted to homosexuals.
We conducted our survey inside the campus of the Technological University of the
Philippines-Taguig and in the public places as well. Our target respondents were students or
teenagers and the common people. We surveyed forty random students from TUP. Our survey
contained 5 random questions. Our participant observation was held alongside Alabang. We
actually conducted it inside the PNR train going to Alabang and inside the Festival Mall which is
also in Alabang. The concept of our participant observation is that one of the researchers will
dress up and act as a homosexual and the rest of the group members will gather the reaction of
the people and observe how the people around the human guinea pig reacted.

We have received various feedbacks from the people who saw our human guinea pig in
action. A saleslady reacted and said that it is okay for her to see a homosexual because that is
what the homosexuals want, they cannot do anything about it. Another civilian said that he
hadnt truly accepted homosexuals for he believes that God created only two genders, the male
and the female. Others said that it was too O.A. and the rest did not give any comment. To sum
it all up, we have observed that some people laughed at our test subject. Others glared at him
with confusion for it is not every day you see a homosexual wearing a wig, heels, and a girls
clothing while the rest of the people just looked at him for quite some time and then looked
away.
After tallying the results of our survey, what we have noticed is that both genders, male
and female, had different feedbacks about homosexuals. We analyzed our results and made some
conclusions about the reactions of people. We have inferred that most males do not show any
reaction when they see homosexuals.
Moreover, they just give a common look to homosexuals, just as how they look at other
people. Comparing that to the females reaction, most females feel sorry when they see
homosexuals. They feel sorry for those people who turned homosexuals because they think that
those people have a better future ahead of them. Most males and females that we have
interviewed knew at least one homosexual who have experienced abuse in the form of
discrimination, verbal bullying, and sometimes beatings from other people.
Most males believed that homosexuality is caused by the influences of the physical
environment while most females believed that the interpersonal relationship of people causes
homosexuality. Most males and females believed that homosexuals continue to receive negative

feedbacks from others because they are not totally accepted by the society. Lastly, both males
and females believe that there will be a time when homosexuals will truly be accepted in the
society. To sum it all up, according to the results of our survey, there was not much negative
feedback about homosexuals, only plain and personal non-offensive views.
D. Why do they keep on getting negative feed backs?
When hearing the word homosexuality, people often give no reaction at all. This is
because that homosexuality is too mainstream and now an acceptable term in our society. Most
people have already accepted the third sex. Yet, there are still some people who cant accept the
third sex.
Those people see them as impure and immoral. It is unexplainable why people feel such a
way for homosexuals considering the fact that they are still normal people who just happened to
have a different sexual preference. We, the researchers wanted to know why people give negative
feed backs to homosexuals. We conducted a participant observation and a descriptive survey to
give answer to our questions.
Based on the survey we have conducted, we can infer that homosexual continue to
receive negative feedbacks not because of how they act or what personality they have, but
because they are still not totally accepted by the society. There are some answers that are related
to religion. Most of those people think that it is still not proper to wish or to pursue to be the
opposite sex.
As I have said, we also conducted a participant observation. We observed the people who
saw our human guinea pig who pretended to be a homosexual, specifically a gay dressed up like

a woman. It caught the attention of everyone especially the ones inside the mall. We have seen
that many of them laughed. Some glared at him for quite some time while the rest gave no
reaction at all. We have concluded that people still make fun of homosexuals who cross-dresses,
especially gays. It is because they still think it is ridiculous and not accepted.
Conclusion
Homosexuality is a prevalent issue nowadays. People who are in the homosexual
community are called homosexuals. Homosexuals are still normal people but it just happens to
be that they have a different sexual preference. There are four kinds of homosexual and those are
the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and the transgendered.
There are many theories for the causes of homosexuality. According to the insights of the
mob, they believe that homosexuality is caused by the external environment of people, the
people they interact with and the environment in which they are reared. A study of a
neuroscientist shows that males with a smaller hypothalamus tend to be gay. According to the
study of a psychiatric professor, homosexuality is caused by the less exposure of the fetus to

antigens in the womb. Based on sociological researches, homosexuality is caused by the fraternal
birth order effect.
People give positive and negative reactions to homosexuals. To know what the reactions
are, we conducted a survey and a participant observation. The results of both methods show that
homosexuality is not totally accepted in the society. There are still people who laugh at
homosexuals and see them as O.A.. Some just gave a look and others showed no reaction at
all. But, the people whom we have observed and interviewed believed that homosexuality will be
accepted by the society someday.
Although prevalent, homosexuals continue to receive negative feedbacks from the
society. They continue to receive such feed backs because they are still not totally accepted by
the society because of various reasons and the most common answer that the people gave us is
that it seems immoral and other religion related answers.
Our first hypothesis, Homosexuality is caused by the social environment and how they
interact with people, was proven to be somehow true because many people believed that
homosexuality is caused by the external environment. However, our researches show that
scientists have proven that biological factors play a huge impact in turning someone into a
homosexual.
Our second hypothesis, People often give different reactions to homosexuals because of
their attitudes and personality was proven to be wrong. Based on the survey that we have
conducted, people give different reactions to homosexuals because they are not totally accepted
by the society. They are just tolerated but not totally accepted.

Based on the survey and participant observation that weve conducted, also in the review
of related literature, we could infer that homosexuals continue to increase in number despite of
the negative feedbacks that they receive because homosexuality is not a choice. According to
most homosexuals, it just happens. They are just doing their best to accept those negative
feedbacks just so they could be a part of the society because many believe that they will someday
be accepted in the society and be considered as the third sex.
Recommendations
Our recommendation or suggestions for future studies about homosexuals is that the
researchers need to find more reliable sources and information. In our study, we only interviewed
heterosexuals. We suggest that next time, the side of the homosexuals should also be considered
in the study of the same topic so that a more reliable answer on questions concerning
homosexuals especially the question Why they still pick to be a homosexual even though they
receive negative feedbacks? because who knows, heterosexuals may have been wrong in the
inferences that they made about homosexuals. A lot of factors should also be considered in

making researches and studies about this kind of topic. Limitations should be set first before
going into venture to avoid offending other people.
In making studies like this, we should research, look for answers, and draw conclusions
in a more proper and formal way to avoid misunderstandings and to prevent ourselves from
offending other people especially those who are involved in this matter.
